What is Petroleum Ether?

Petroleum ether, also known as ligroine or naphtha, is a highly flammable and volatile mixture of liquid hydrocarbons derived from the fractional distillation of crude oil. It is a complex mixture of aliphatic and cyclic hydrocarbons, primarily consisting of pentane, hexane, and heptane isomers.

Composition and Properties of Petroleum Ether

The exact composition varies depending on the source and the distillation range, but it typically contains:

  • Pentane (C5H12): 20-40%
  • Hexane (C6H14) isomers: 30-60%
  • Heptane (C7H16) isomers: 10-25%
