Summary

Problems

Existing RFID systems face challenges in attaching wireless IC devices to small articles due to their large size, requiring metallic antennas that need precise positioning and varying resonant frequency characteristics with antenna layout, making them difficult to use on various articles.

Innovation solutions

A compact electromagnetic coupling module is developed using a dielectric body with a wireless IC chip and a feed circuit board, where the dielectric body functions as an antenna, allowing for stable frequency characteristics and easy attachment to various articles, with the dielectric body's size determining antenna gain and the feed circuit board's design ensuring matching impedance and resonant frequency.

Try to solve problems with it

Principle concept:

If a metallic antenna is used to obtain desired gain, then the antenna gain is improved, but the size of the wireless IC device is increased

Why choose this principle:

The patent changes the fundamental parameter of antenna material from metal to dielectric substance. The dielectric body with specific permittivity (≥1) serves as the antenna element, eliminating the need for metallic structures. This parameter change allows the antenna to achieve desired gain while significantly reducing the overall device size, as dielectric bodies can be made compact while maintaining electromagnetic radiation efficiency.

Principle concept:

If a metallic antenna is used to obtain desired gain, then the antenna gain is improved, but the size of the wireless IC device is increased

Why choose this principle:

The patent replaces the traditional metallic mechanical antenna structure with a dielectric-based electromagnetic coupling system. The dielectric body interacts with electromagnetic fields through its permittivity properties rather than through metallic conduction, fundamentally substituting the mechanism of electromagnetic interaction while achieving the same antenna function with reduced size.

Abstract

An article having an electromagnetic coupling module attached thereto includes an electromagnetic coupling module and a PET bottle having the electromagnetic coupling module bonded thereto. The electromagnetic coupling module includes a wireless IC chip arranged to process transmission and reception signals and the feed circuit board having the wireless IC chip mounted thereon. The feed circuit board includes a feed circuit including a resonant circuit having a predetermined resonant frequency. The feed circuit performs characteristic impedance matching between the PET bottle and the wireless IC chip. The PET bottle functions as a radiator arranged to radiate a transmission signal supplied from the feed circuit using electromagnetic field coupling and to supply a received reception signal to the feed circuit using electromagnetic field coupling.
