Abstract

The present invention relates to waste treatment and provides a process for depletion of zinc from Zn-coated Fe by subjecting the Zn-coated Fe to a leaching step in an acidic solution comprising Fe3+ to provide an acidic solution containing Zn2+ and Fe2+; obtaining a metallic Fe substrate depleted from zinc; and separating Fe2+ from Zn2+ to provide a Zn2+-containing product and a Fe2+ salt.
