Repurposing of messaging and coding scheme (MCS) indication for contention resolution message repetitions

Abstract

A method is provided that includes receiving a downlink control information (DCI) scheduling a contention resolution message. The DCI includes a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) field that contains a most significant bit (MSB) indicating repetitions are activated for the content resolution message, and nonMSB bits indicating an MCS index value that maps to an MCS table. The method includes monitoring for the contention resolution message and repetitions of the contention resolution message based on the DCI, and detecting a failure to successfully decode the contention resolution message from the contention resolution message and the repetitions. The method includes receiving a second DCI scheduling retransmission of the contention resolution message, and monitoring for the retransmission based on the second DCI. In the second DCI, all of the MSB and non-MSB bits of the MCS field indicate an MCS index value that maps to the MCS table.
