Repurposing of messaging and coding scheme (MCS) indication for contention resolution message repetitions

Abstract

A method is provided that includes receiving a downlink control information (DCI) scheduling a contention resolution message. The DCI includes a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) field that contains a most significant bit (MSB) and non-MSB bits. The MSB indicates repetitions are activated for the content resolution message. The non-MSB bits indicate one of a number of MCS index values that map to an MCS table, and the number of MCS index values include one or more reserved MCS index values. The method also includes monitoring for the contention resolution message and repetitions of the contention resolution message based on the DCI.
