2 environmentalandhealthconcernsassociatedwithPVCandplasticizers.Itisalsoan objectivetoprovideamultilayerfloorcoveringthateliminatesPVC,andoptionallyplasticizers, whereinthefloorcoveringhasoptimalmechanicalproperties,insulation,and / oracoustic properties. Itisalsoanobjectivetoprovideamethodforproductionofafloorcoveringthateliminatesthe5 useofPVC,andoptionallyplasticizers,butwhereintheexistingproductionplantsofcushion vinylfloorcoveringscanbeeasilyconvertedtoproductionplantsthatallowtheproductionof amultilayerfloorcoveringaccordingtotheinvention. SUMMARYOFTHEINVENTION10 Theinventionhasforitsobjecttoremedyortoreduceatleastoneofthedrawbacksofthe priorart,oratleastprovideausefulalternativetopriorart.Theobjectisachievedthrough features,whicharespecifiedinthedescriptionbelowandintheclaimsthatfollow. Theinventionisdefinedbytheindependentpatentclaims.Thedependentclaimsdefine advantageousembodimentsoftheinvention.15 TheinventorshavedevelopedamultilayerfloorcoveringthateliminatestheuseofPVCand optionallyalsotheuseofplasticizers.Specifically,themultilayerfloorcoveringcomprisesin thefollowingorderatleastabackinglayer,acoatinglayerbasedonapolymer-in-water dispersionandawearlayer.Preferredforthepresentinventionisthatthebackinglayer,the coatinglayer,andthewearlayerareeachessentiallyfreeofPVChomopolymersandPVC20 copolymersandthattheselayerseachcompriseathermoplasticpolymerwhereinsaid thermoplasticpolymerineachlayerisofthesamefamilyofthermoplasticpolymers.Also preferredisthatthebackinglayerhasanairpermeabilityofatleast500l / m2 / smeasuredat 200PascalaccordingtoISO9237,suchthattheafterapplicationofthecoatinglayer,which isbasedonapolymer-in-waterdispersion,sufficientwaterfromthecoatinglayercan25 evaporatethroughthebackinglayer.Insomepreferredembodiments,themultilayerfloor coveringisessentiallyfreeofPVChomopolymersandPVCcopolymers.Insomepreferred embodiments,thebackinglayer,thecoatinglayer,andthewearlayerareeachessentially freeofanypolymerotherthanthethermoplasticpolymer.Assuch,amultilayerfloorcovering iscreatedwhereinonlyonefamilyofthermoplasticpolymerispresentinthebackinglayer,30 thecoatinglayer,andthewearlayer.Morepreferably,themultilayerfloorcoveringis essentiallyfreeofanypolymerotherthanthethermoplasticpolymer.Furtherpreferred,isthat themultilayerfloorcoveringasdisclosedhereinhasabendingstiffnessofatmost800N.mm, preferablyasmeasuredbythebendingstiffnesstestdisclosedherein,morepreferablybya modifiedbendingtestaccordingtoISO5628asdisclosedherein.Assuch,eveninthe35 BE2024 / 5874 3 absenceofPVCandoptionallyalsointheabsenceofplasticizers,aflexiblefloorcovering productiscreated.Theinventorshavealsodevelopedaproductionmethodtoproduceamultilayerfloorcovering asdisclosedherein,whereinawearlayerisprovidedwhereafteracoatinglayerbasedona polymer-in-waterdispersionisappliedonthewearlayerfollowedbyapplyingabackinglayer5 onthecoatinglayer,whereinthebackinglayerisconfiguredtooverliethecoatinglayersuch thatthebackinglayercontactsthecoatinglayer. Anotheraspectprovidesaproductionmethodtoproduceamultilayerfloorcoveringas disclosedherein,whereinabackinglayerisprovidedwhereafteracoatinglayerbasedona polymer-in-waterdispersionisappliedonthebackinglayerfollowedbyapplyingawearlayer10 onthecoatinglayer,whereinthewearlayerisconfiguredtooverliethecoatinglayersuchthat thewearinglayercontactsthecoatinglayer. Theadvantageoftheproductionmethodsdisclosedhereinisthattheyeliminatetheuseof PVC,andoptionallyalsotheuseofplasticizers.Thepresentinventionprovidesacost-competitiveanddurablemultilayerfloorcovering15 equivalenttoaplasticizedheterogenousvinylfloorcoveringbutwithoutusingPVCand / or plasticizers.Themultilayerfloorcoveringofthepresentinventionthusachievesthedesirable propertiesofdurability,flexibility,andaestheticappealwithouttheenvironmentalandhealth drawbacksassociatedwithPVC.Inparticular,thefloorcoveringofthepresentinventionis characterizedinthatitcomprisesatleastawearlayer,acoatinglayer,andabackinglayer20 thatareallessentiallyfreeofPVCandoptionallyessentiallyfreeofplasticizersandwherein thefloorcoveringstillprovidesthenecessarymechanicalandscratchresistanceproperties. Insomeembodiments,themultilayerfloorcoveringhasabendingstiffnessofatmost800 N.mm,preferablyasmeasuredaccordingtothebendingstiffnesstestdisclosedherein,more preferablyasmeasuredaccordingtoamodifiedbendingstiffnesstestaccordingtoISO562825 asdisclosedherein,evenintheabsenceofPVCand / orplasticizers.Alsoprovidedisamethodtoproduceamultilayerfloorcoveringthatcomprisesawearlayer, acoatinglayer,andabackinglayerthatareallessentiallyfreeofPVCandoptionally essentiallyfreeofplasticizers. Insomepreferredembodiments,thebackinglayer,thecoatinglayer,andthewearlayerare eachessentiallyfreeofanypolymerotherthanthethermoplasticpolymerthatisofthesame familyofthermoplasticpolymers..
