Abstract
Description
[001] The present invention relates to a saddle-mounted vehicle, in particular, to a saddle-mounted vehicle that is a flex-fuel vehicle that is powered by fuel containing alcohol. 2. Description of the Background
[002] Among saddle-mounted vehicles, gasoline-powered vehicles include an internal fuel filter (primary filter) connected to a fuel pump in a fuel tank for fuel filtration, and flex-fuel vehicles containing alcohol additionally include: an external fuel filter (secondary filter) installed in the fuel supply line connecting the fuel pump to an injector in the intake member and a return fuel line to return fuel from the secondary filter to the fuel pump, as described in Patent Literature 1.
[003] This makes the arrangement of fuel lines in flex-fuel vehicles more complicated compared to gasoline vehicles. When the vehicle additionally includes a container, another layout must be considered. For example, Patent Literature 2 shows a saddle-mounted vehicle including a container. The vehicle in Patent Literature 2, however, does not have a secondary filter, and the document does not show the positional relationship with the secondary filter. Furthermore, the container has a cylindrical shape located below the fuel tank and on the main frame, with the central axis extending in the front-to-rear direction of the vehicle. This creates a problem with installation space. LIST OF QUOTES PATENT LITERATURE Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 6 / 57 2 / 18
[004] Patent Literature 1: JP 2010-216485 A (Figures 2 and 3).
[005] Patent Literature 2: JP 2020-015450 A (Figures 1 to 5). BRIEF SUMMARY
[006] In view of these conventional techniques, the present invention provides a flexible fuel saddle-mounted vehicle powered by alcohol-containing fuel, which includes a secondary filter, a fuel line and a container that are arranged without making the vehicle excessively large.
[007] To solve the above problems, a saddle-mounted vehicle according to one aspect of the present invention includes: an internal combustion engine and an intake member disposed below the main frames; a fuel tank disposed above the internal combustion engine and the intake member; at least one internal fuel filter within the fuel filter, the internal fuel filter connected to a fuel pump; and at least one external fuel filter on the outside of the fuel tank, the external fuel filter connected to the fuel tank via a fuel supply line. The saddle-mounted vehicle further includes a container connected to the fuel tank via a fuel supply line, and the intake member is disposed vertically between the container and the external fuel filter.
[008] With this configuration, the intake member is arranged vertically between the container and the external fuel filter as the secondary filter, such that the container and the external fuel filter can be positioned close to the intake member, having an improved degree of freedom in the layout, and shortening and optimizing the length of the fuel lines that are connected to the fuel tank, the external fuel filter and the container. Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 7 / 57 3 / 18 entity.
[009] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the container is arranged above the intake member and the external fuel filter.
[0010] The container fixed in an elevated position on the vehicle prevents water from entering the container when the vehicle becomes flooded.
[0011] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the container is disposed in a position between the fuel tank and an air filter box fixed to the main frames and connected upstream of the intake member to purify the intake air.
[0012] In this way, the container is placed between the fuel tank and the air filter box, and this protects the container better.
[0013] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the external fuel filter is arranged in a position between the main frames to the left and right of the external fuel filter in the direction of the vehicle's width and an internal combustion engine crankcase.
[0014] In this way, the external fuel filter is surrounded by the rigid main frames and the crankcase, better protecting the external fuel filter.
[0015] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the fuel tank has the fuel pump on its underside, the container has a cylindrical shape with a central axis extending in the direction of the vehicle's width, the container is connected to the fuel tank via a fuel filler pipe and is connected to the intake member via a fuel purge pipe, and is arranged along a transverse member connecting the left and right main frames, and a Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 8 / 57 The 4 / 18 purge control valve, located on the purge fuel line, is situated below the fuel tank and behind the fuel pump.
[0016] This configuration facilitates the assembly of fuel lines and allows the container to easily maintain clearance from the fuel tank and be arranged compactly even in a space crowded with other parts.
[0017] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the container has an outer periphery surrounded by a band member, the band member having a cutout that attaches a rib to the container.
[0018] When the container is placed in a tight space between the fuel tank and the air filter box, it will be difficult to maintain clearance between the components. Vibrations from the vehicle body can rotate the container, or they can displace the fuel lines. In this case, these fuel lines may receive excessive load. The rib, captured in the cutout of the band member, restricts the movement of the container and thus prevents displacement of the container from the fuel lines.
[0019] According to the saddle-mounted vehicle of the present invention, the container and the external fuel filter, as well as the secondary filter, are arranged so that the intake member is vertically between them. With this configuration, the container and the external fuel filter can be arranged close to the intake member, having an improved degree of freedom in the layout, and the length of the fuel lines that are connected to the fuel tank, the external fuel filter, and the container can be shortened. [0028] With reference to Figures 1 to 8, the following describes a saddle-mounted vehicle according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[0029] In the present embodiment, the saddle-mounted vehicle is a motorcycle, and directions such as front-to-back, left-to-right, and up-to-down in the claims and descriptions follow the orientation of the vehicle (motorcycle) of the present embodiment.
[0030] In the drawings, the forward, left, right, and upward arrows indicate the front, left, right, and top of the Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, p. 10 / 57 6 / 18 vehicle, respectively.
[0031] Figure 1 is a schematic view of the left side of a motorcycle 1 according to the present embodiment, shown partially in section without a body cover of the vehicle.
[0032] As shown in Figure 1, the motorcycle (saddle-mounted vehicle of the present invention) 1 of the present embodiment includes a body frame 2, having a pair of left and right main frames 21 that extend rearward and slightly downward from the head tube 20. Each main frame 21 has a bend 21a that bends downward in side view, followed by a steep portion 21b that is sharply inclined to reach a pivot frame 22.
[0033] The body frame 2 also features a pair of left and right down frames 23 that extend downward from the main tube 20 at a steeply oblique angle. The down frames 23 are substantially parallel to the steep portions 21b of the main frames 21 in side view.
[0034] The body frame 2 has a pair of left and right seat rails 24 extending rearward from the folds 21a of the main frames 21, and a pair of left and right rear braces 25 connecting the rear portion of the seat rails 24 and the pivot frames 22 to support the seat rails 24.
[0035] These main frames 21, folds 21a, steep portions 21b and seat rails 24 to the left and right are connected by a plurality of cross members 26 placed in appropriate positions.
[0036] For the body frame 2, as indicated above, the head tube 20 pivotally supports the front forks 11 which rotatably support a front wheel 12 at the lower ends. Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, p. 11 / 57 7 / 18
[0037] The pivot frames 22, which are connected to the lower part of the steep portions 21b of the main frames 21, support the front ends of the rear forks 13. The rear forks 13 extend rearward and rotationally support a rear wheel 14 at the rear ends. A rear cushion 15 is placed between the rear forks 13 and the body frame 2.
[0038] The main frames 21 support a fuel tank 16 in front, and the seat rails 24 support a seat 17 behind the fuel tank 16.
[0039] In the present embodiment, the motorcycle 1 has an internal combustion engine 3 mounted below the main frames 21 and in front of the steep sections 21b. The internal combustion engine 3 is suspended therein and has a crankcase 30 having a front section attached to a support 23a fixed to the lower end of the descending frames 23 and a rear section attached to the pivot frames 22.
[0040] The internal combustion engine 3 of the present embodiment includes a transmission 4 in the rear portion in the crankcase 30 to constitute a power unit. The internal combustion engine 3 is of a four-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled cycle type mounted on the motorcycle 1 with the crankshaft 31 in the direction of the width of the motorcycle 1, i.e., in the left-to-right direction.
[0041] At the rear of the crankcase 30, the transmission 4 has a main shaft (not shown) and a countershaft 42 parallel to the crankshaft 31. The countershaft 42 penetrates the crankcase 30 on the left to project outwards. This shaft is the final output shaft of the power unit, and has an output sprocket 43 on the protrusion. A drive chain 44 wound around the output sprocket 43 passes over a driven sprocket 45 on the rear wheel 14 to constitute a chain drive mechanism, thus transmitting power to the rear wheel 14. Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 12 / 57 8 / 18
[0042] The internal combustion engine 3 is suspended so that a cylinder block 32, a cylinder head 33 and a cylinder head cover 34 are in the crankcase 30 with the cylinder axis slightly inclined forward.
[0043] An intake tube 51, connected to an intake port 35 of the cylinder head 33 of the internal combustion engine 3, extends rearward from the cylinder head 33, and is routed through an intake member 50 including the intake tube 51, a throttle body 52, and a connecting tube 53 to reach an air filter box 55.
[0044] An exhaust pipe 61, connected to an exhaust port on the cylinder head 33, extends forward from the cylinder head 33. The exhaust pipe 61 then bends downward to extend rearward under the internal combustion engine 3, so that the exhaust path reaches a muffler 62 to the right of the rear wheel 14.
[0045] In the present embodiment, the internal combustion engine 3 uses fuel containing alcohol.
[0046] In other words, motorcycle 1 of the present embodiment is a flex-fuel vehicle that uses fuel containing alcohol.
[0047] Figure 2 is a left side view around the fold. 21a of main frame 21 in Figure 1, showing the vicinity of intake member 50 partially in section without main frame 21 and the steep portion 21b to the left.
[0048] Figure 3 depicts an external fuel filter 73 and a container 8 shown in Figure 2, which will be described later, and fuel lines connected to them.
[0049] Unlike gasoline-powered vehicles, flex-fuel vehicles include, in addition to an internal fuel filter connected to a fuel pump 70 in the fuel tank 16 as a filter Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 13 / 57 9 / 18 primary for fuel filtration, an external fuel filter 73 as a secondary filter. This external fuel filter 73 is placed in a fuel supply pipe 72 that runs from the fuel pump 70 at the bottom of the fuel tank 16 to an injector 75 on the intake member 50. The vehicle also includes a return fuel pipe 74 that returns fuel from the external fuel filter 73 to the fuel pump 70 (see Figures 2 and 3).
[0050] Specifically, fuel with fine powder, such as alcohol, requires a fuel filter with a finer mesh to increase the contact area with the fuel. This, however, shortens the fuel filter replacement cycle and increases the frequency of maintenance. Furthermore, a fine-mesh fuel filter placed upstream of the fuel pump may become a resistance when the amount of fuel to be supplied suddenly increases, such as when accelerating the vehicle. This causes a problem, such as difficulty in quickly supplying the required amount of fuel.
[0051] To deal with this problem, the flex vehicle includes: the internal fuel filter (primary filter), connected to the fuel pump 70 in the fuel tank 16, which has a coarse mesh similar to a gasoline-powered vehicle to reduce resistance; and the external fuel filter (secondary filter) 73 which has a finer mesh than the internal fuel filter (primary filter).
[0052] This configuration collects large dust in the internal fuel filter (primary filter) and fine dust in the external fuel filter (secondary filter) 73, which suppresses clogging of these filters and reduces resistance.
[0053] As shown in Figure 3, the fuel supply pipe 72 is separated into: a fuel supply pipe Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 14 / 57 10 / 18 upstream 72A connecting fuel pump 70 to external fuel filter 73; and a downstream fuel supply pipe 72B connecting the external fuel filter 73 to the injector 75.
[0054] The return fuel pipe 74 branches off from the downstream fuel supply pipe 72B on the discharge side of the external fuel filter 73 via a three-way joint 76. The return fuel pipe 74 is connected to a pressure regulator, not shown, fixed to the fuel pump 70 in the fuel tank 16, so as to return the over-pressurized fuel to the fuel tank 16.
[0055] The fuel that has passed through the three-way joint 76 is sent to the injector 75 through the downstream fuel supply pipe 72B.
[0056] As shown in Figure 2, the motorcycle 1 of the present embodiment includes the container 8 for gas treatment without directly releasing the evaporated fuel gas generated in the fuel tank 16 into the atmosphere.
[0057] In the present embodiment, container 8 is a cylindrical container containing an adsorbent, such as activated carbon.
[0058] Container 8 is located along and in a rear portion of the first cross member 26A that connects the left and right main frames 21 in close proximity to the folds 21a of the main frames 21 that are connected to the seat rails 24. Container 8 is positioned above the connecting tube 53 that forms the upstream part of the intake member 50 with the central axis directed in the direction of the vehicle width.
[0059] Container 8 and external fuel filter 73 are arranged so that the connecting tube 53 runs vertically between them, and container 8 is positioned between the fuel tank 16, located in front of and above container 8, and the air filter housing 55, located Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 15 / 57 11 / 18 behind and below in relation to the fuel tank 16, in the front-to-rear direction of the vehicle body.
[0060] The term vertically is not limited to the relationship in which the container 8 and the external fuel filter 73 are placed perpendicularly in a vertical view of the vehicle body, but also includes relationships in which the container 8 and the external fuel filter 73 are offset in a front-to-rear direction or in a left-to-right direction from the vehicle body.
[0061] Figure 4 is a left side view of container 8 in Figure 3. Figure 5 is a front perspective view of container 8, taken along arrow VV in Figure 4. Figure 6 is a rear perspective view of container 8, taken along arrow VI-VI in Figure 4. Figure 7 is a bottom perspective view of container 8, taken along arrow VII-VII in Figure 4.
[0062] As shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5, a charging fuel pipe 81 and a purge fuel pipe 82 are connected to the right end 8a of the container 8.
[0063] The fuel loading pipe 81 is connected to a fuel vapor separator (not shown) in fuel tank 16, and the evaporating fuel gas is introduced into container 8 from inside fuel tank 16 for adsorption.
[0064] That is, when motorcycle 1 is parked, for example, the evaporating fuel gas generated by heating the fuel in fuel tank 16 will be sent to container 8 through the fuel loading tube 81 and will be adsorbed by the adsorbent in container 8.
[0065] As shown in Figure 2, the purge fuel tube 82 is connected downstream of the throttle valve, not shown, of the throttle body 52 of the intake member 50 in this embodiment. The evaporation of the fuel gas adsorbed in the container 8 is Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 16 / 57 12 / 18 purged by the negative pressure in the intake member 50 generated during the operation of the internal combustion engine 3, and is returned through the purge fuel pipe 82 to the intake pipe 51 of the intake member 50 for combustion in the internal combustion engine 3 to purify the gas.
[0066] As shown in Figures 3, 4, 6, an external air inlet tube 83 and a drain tube 84, which communicate with the atmosphere, are connected to the left end 8b of the container 8. The external air inlet tube 83 will introduce external air into the container 8 to facilitate purging when the evaporating fuel gas adsorbed by the adsorbent is purged. The drain tube 84 discharges unnecessary gas and liquid into the container 8 during the adsorption of the evaporating fuel gas to facilitate adsorption.
[0067] As described above, container 8 and external fuel filter 73 as the secondary filter are arranged to have intake member 50 vertically between them, so that container 8 and external fuel filter 73, which can be moved to the left and right, can be placed close to intake member 50, while having an improved degree of freedom in the layout.
[0068] This also shortens and optimizes the lengths of the fuel lines, including: the fuel supply line 72 (upstream fuel supply line 72A and downstream fuel supply line 72B) to send fuel from fuel pump 70 from fuel tank 16 to injector 75 through external fuel filter 73; the return fuel line 74 to return fuel from external fuel filter 73 to fuel pump 70; the charge fuel line 81 to send evaporating fuel gas from fuel tank 16 to container 8; and the purge fuel line 82 Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 17 / 57 13 / 18 to send evaporating fuel gas from container 8 to intake member 50.
[0069] In addition, container 8 is located above intake member 50 and external fuel filter 73. This means that container 8 is fixed in an elevated position on the vehicle, which will prevent water from entering container 8 when the vehicle becomes flooded.
[0070] As shown in Figure 1, the container 8 is positioned between the fuel tank 16 and the air filter housing 55 fixed to the main frames 21 and connected upstream of the intake member 50 to purify the intake air. This better protects the container 8.
[0071] Figure 8 is a cross-sectional view of the main front part of motorcycle 1, taken along arrow VIII-VIII in Figure 1.
[0072] As shown in Figures 3 and 8, the external fuel filter 73 of the present embodiment has a cylindrical shape. The external fuel filter 73 is fixed behind the crankcase 30 and along the front of the second cross member 26B connecting the steep portions 21b of the left and right main frames 21 through a filter support 78 with its axis directed in the direction of the width of the vehicle.
[0073] That is, the external fuel filter 73 is located between the steep portions 21b of the left and right main frames 21 on both sides of the external fuel filter 73 in the direction of the vehicle's width, and the crankcase 30 of the internal combustion engine 3. Specifically, the upper face of the crankcase 30 is located below the external fuel filter 73, and the left and right main frames 21 are located on both sides of the external fuel filter 73 in the direction of the vehicle's width. This means that the filter Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 18 / 57 The external fuel filter 73 is surrounded by the rigid main frames 21 and the oil pan 30, thus better protecting the external fuel filter 73. In a side view of the vehicle, the main frames 21 overlap part of the external fuel filter 73 (see Figure 1). This further increases the protection of the external fuel filter 73.
[0074] As shown in Figures 2 and 8, the container 8 is connected to the intake member 50 via the purge fuel tube 82, as described above.
[0075] The purge fuel pipe 82 communicates with the container 8 through a purge control valve (PCSV: purge control solenoid valve) 85 in the vicinity of the container 8.
[0076] The purge control valve 85 opens and closes under electrical control to allow the purge fuel gas, drawn from container 8 to the internal combustion engine 3 through the intake member 50, to flow from container 8 to the intake member 50.
[0077] Furthermore, the fuel pump 70 is located on the underside of the fuel tank 16 shown in Figure 1, the container 8 has a cylindrical shape having a central axis that extends in the direction of the vehicle's width and is located along and behind the first cross member (cross member 26A in the present invention) connecting the left and right main frames 21 in the vicinity of the folds 21a. The purge control valve 85, placed on the purge fuel pipe 82 and near the container 8, is located below the fuel tank 16 and behind the fuel pump 70.
[0078] With this configuration, container 8 easily maintains a clearance from fuel tank 16 and can be compactly placed even in a space crowded with other parts, which facilitates Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, p. 19 / 57 15 / 18 the assembly of the fuel lines to be connected to container 8, including the fuel loading line 81 and the fuel purge line 82.
[0079] As shown in Figure 3, the external air intake tube 83 extends behind the container 8 and then bends downwards so as to direct the opening downwards. The opening is open to air in the space above the main frames 21, in front of the air filter box 55, and under the seat 17 (see Figure 1). By introducing fresh air, this configuration eliminates the mixing of dust and heat influences from the internal combustion engine 3.
[0080] Although not shown, the drain pipe 84 extends downwards to reach the lower rear part of the crankcase 30, so that the drain pipe 84 has its lower end opening downwards into the lower part of the vehicle body. This eliminates influences on the vehicle body and passengers from drained gas and liquid.
[0081] As shown in Figures 4 to 7, the outer periphery 8c of the container 8 is surrounded by a band member 9, and a rib 87 on the outer periphery 8c of the container 8 is captured in a cutout 91 of the band member 9.
[0082] The band member 9 has a protrusion 92 on the outer periphery, the protrusion 92 having an engagement hole 93 that extends in the circumferential direction of the container 8. A support 95, extending from the first cross member 26A connecting the left and right main frames 21, has a pointed end 95a. Insertion of this pointed end 95a into the engagement hole 93 allows the container 8 to be positioned along the first cross member 26A with its central axis directed in the direction of the vehicle width (see Figures 4 and 5).
[0083] Band member 9 also presents a second Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, page 20 / 57 16 / 18 protrusion 96 on the outer periphery, the protrusion 96 having an engagement hole 97 that extends in the axial direction of the container 8. In this engagement hole 97, a pointed end 98a of a valve holder 98 is inserted, and the purge control valve 85 is attached to the valve holder 98, thus placing the purge control valve 85 close to the container 8 (see Figures 4 and 5).
[0084] When container 8 is placed along the first cross member 26A in the narrow space between the fuel tank 16 and the air filter housing 55, it will be difficult to maintain the clearance between the components. Pulsation of the fuel lines connected to container 8, such as the charge fuel line 81 and the purge fuel line 82, or vibrations of the vehicle body may rotate container 8 around its axis, or may displace the fuel lines 81, 82. In this case, these fuel lines 81 and 82 may receive an overload. The rib 87, captured in the recess 91 of the band member 9, on the outer periphery 8a restricts the movement of container 8 and thus prevents displacement of container 8 from the fuel lines 81, 82.
[0085] This is a description of the saddle-mounted vehicle according to an embodiment of the present invention, and the present invention is not limited to this embodiment. Various embodiments may be implemented within the scope of the present invention.

[0087] The internal combustion engine is not limited to the single-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled internal combustion engine. Petition 870260026290, dated 03 / 20 / 2026, p. 21 / 57 17 / 18 generated by air from the embodiment, which can be from any other type of multi-cylinder internal combustion engine.
