Description
BEVERAGES BASED ON BITTER PRINCIPLES OF MEDICINAL PLANTS (01) This descriptive report of a Patent of Invention refers to a series of new beverages, formulated from the bitter principles / dry extracts obtained from various plants used in Brazilian folk medicine, namely: . Rosmarinum officinalis, commonly known as rosemary, . Cynara scolymus, commonly known as artichoke, . Schinus terebinthifolius rad, commonly known as mastic tree, . Artemisia vulgaris, commonly known as mugwort, . Arctium lappa L., commonly known as burdock, . Stryphnodendron adstringens, commonly known as barbatimão, . Peumus boldus Molina and Vernonia condensata, both known as boldo, . Matricaria recutita L., commonly known as chamomile, . Baccharis genistelloides persoon and Bicharis articulata, both known as gorse, . Rhamnus purshiana, commonly known as cascara sagrada, . Equisetum arvense, commonly known as horsetail, . Echinodorus macrophyllus, known as chapéu de couro, . Symphytum sp L, commonly known as comfrey, . Acmella ciliata Kunth Cass, commonly known as figatil, . Psidium guajava, commonly known as guava, .Mikania glomerata, commonly known as guaco, . Petiveria alliacea, commonly known as guinea, . Achyrocline satureioides, commonly known as macela, . Quassia amara L., commonly known as pau amargo, , Bauhinia forficata, commonly known as pata de vaca, . Sambucus nigra L., commonly known as elderberry, and . Salvia officinalis L., commonly known as sage. Petition 870250007675, dated 01 / 30 / 2025, page 5 / 11 / 4 ( 02 ) The bitter principles of plants are divided into three categories: Pure bitters, also called tonic bitters, are plants that, in addition to bitter compounds, contain essential oils that give the herb a bitter-aromatic flavor, known as aromatic bitters. Plants that contain pungent substances, therefore possessing a bitter and pungent flavor at the same time, known as amara àcria, are plants that contain pungent substances, therefore possessing a bitter and pungent flavor at the same time. (03) These bitter principles intensely stimulate the secretion of gastric juices and develop a general tonic action. Often, this effect is reinforced by the essential oil, which stimulates gastric secretion through its aroma via reflex pathways. Some of these principles have antiseptic activity, others have antibacterial and antiparasitic properties, among other diverse benefits for humans. (04) Some of these bitter principles extracted from plants are quite well known: . Caffeine, extracted from coffee beans and also from yerba mate leaves, . Quassine, extracted from both the trunk and bark of the bitterwood plant, . Boldine, extracted from boldo leaves, . Quercetin, extracted from chamomile flowers, . Vernonosides A1, A2, A3 and A4, extracted from fig leaves, . Absinthin, anabsinthin, artabsin and santonin, extracted from wormwood leaves. ( 05 ) There are several carbonated drinks on the market today, but none with this formulation, that is, with dry extract of medicinal plants. The closest thing to this is tonic water based on quinine. ( 06 ) Knowing that the use of various plants, both native and exotic, is very widespread in Brazilian folk medicine in the form of teas and infusions as tonics, digestives, analgesics, blood purifiers, invigorators, fever reducers, among hundreds of other indications, we had the idea of developing this new product, combining the already known use of these plants with a new way of consuming and preserving / storing them. Petition 870250007675, dated 01 / 30 / 2025, page 6 / 11 / 4 (07) This new use for medicinal plants would benefit thousands of small Brazilian farmers who live from planting, extracting, processing and marketing them in their natural state. These small farmers would have an increase in their source of income, provided that these new products could be produced on an industrial scale, industries which, being relatively simple, could be installed in all corners of Brazil, taking advantage of the raw material available in each region. ( 08 ) Another great advantage of these new products is that their health benefits, even if small, would be available to millions of people who today do not enjoy using them in the form of hot teas, which require prior preparation, whereas if they were industrially produced and made available as ready-to-drink beverages, they could be available anytime and anywhere. (09) These beverages based on bitter principles, which are the subject of this Patent of Invention, are basically composed of the ingredients listed below: . Water . Carbon dioxide . Bitter principles / dry extract of the plants mentioned above, some unnamed and others known, such as: quassine, boldine, vernonosides, absinthin, santonin, quercetin, (10) It should be noted that the composition of the various drinks reported above is basically the same, that is, what makes them different from each other is the origin of the bitter principle, which gives a different flavor and purpose to each of the formulations. Petition 870250007675, dated 01 / 30 / 2025, page 7 / 11 / 4 ( 12 ) All products in this Patent Application have proven to be functional, industrial and commercial, given that the use of medicinal plants is very widespread in Brazil. The new way in which these bitter / medicinal principles would be made available to consumers would facilitate their use, regardless of the time of year and / or the region where the consumer resides. (13) It is clear from all that has been described and presented that this is a new, important and significant innovation for the health sector, both nationally and internationally. With the granting of this Invention Patent, thousands of small rural producers will certainly benefit, as well as the millions of consumers of these new products.
