Description

"Washing composition and method for cleaning a surface" Field of Invention

[001] The present invention is directed to a washing composition with desirable consumer characteristics, wherein the compositions may be isotropic or lamellar. More particularly, the washing composition of the present invention is substantially sulfate-free, comprises glutamate, aspartate or both, and optionally at least one additional anionic surfactant selected from isethionates, taurate and / or glycinates. The total anionic surfactant used in the washing composition is from 1 to 9% by weight, and the washing composition is mild, stable, lathers well and produces a soft and smooth feel after use. Unexpectedly, the washing composition produces these desirable consumer characteristics even when formulated with reduced levels of palm kernel oil-derived surfactants. Background of the Invention

[002] Consumers often seek low-sulfate or even sulfate-free laundry compositions, as these compositions are not only gentler on the environment but also gentler on surfaces such as textiles, skin, and hair. Unfortunately, mild laundry compositions, when combined with water and shear, are typically poor at providing desirable consumer characteristics, such as desirable foam. Laundry compositions that produce desirable foam are appreciated by consumers, as they generally wash more and more when the product foams well. During flu and cold season, and especially during epidemics and pandemics, longer wash times are encouraged to better sanitize the target surface. Furthermore, desirable foam increases... Petition 870260031561, dated 06 / 04 / 2026, page 10 / 81 2 / 30 removes dirt and microbes, resulting in cleaner surfaces that are easier to rinse with less water.

[003] In addition to having little or no sulfate, it is desirable to reduce the amount of surfactant with hydrophobic moieties derived from palm kernel oil. Palm kernel oil, which predominantly consists of lauric (C12) and myristic (C14) fatty acids, yields surfactants (produced by esterifications of these with hydrophilic head groups) that produce excellent foaming characteristics. However, reliance on palm kernel oil is considered a major contributor to deforestation, threatens biodiversity, and increases greenhouse gas emissions.

[004] There is increasing interest in developing washing compositions that are mild, have a positive environmental impact, and are simultaneously stable and produce desirable characteristics for the consumer. The present invention, therefore, is directed to a washing composition that is substantially sulfate-free and has reduced levels of surfactant with hydrophobic moieties derived from palm kernel oil. The washing composition of the present invention comprises glutamate, aspartate, or both, and optionally, at least one additional anionic surfactant selected from isethionates, taurate, and / or glycinates. The total anionic surfactant used in the washing composition is typically 1 to 9% (or 1.8 to 8% or 2 to 7.2% or 3.3 to 7.5%) by weight, and the washing composition is surprisingly mild, stable, produces a soft and smooth feel after use, and unexpectedly produces such desirable characteristics for the consumer, even when formulated with reduced levels of palm kernel oil-derived surfactants.
