Description
1 / 42 Recyclable multilayer films that have a sealing layer formed from a blend of polypropylenes. Field of Invention
[0001] The present invention relates to a multilayer film (F) comprising a coating layer, a core layer and a sealing layer, wherein the sealing layer comprises a polypropylene composition comprising a RAHECO and two random propylene-ethylene copolymers. Background of the Invention
[0002] Plastic packaging is widely used in everyday life due to a favorable cost / performance ratio. Polyolefins are easy and economical to produce with good properties and are widely used in plastic packaging.
[0003] Conflicting properties are frequently required in the packaging industry. For example, high stiffness and strength, as well as excellent sealing behavior and good optical properties are required in parallel for plastic films. Different types of polyolefin, for example, polypropylene and polyethylene, are routinely combined in blends and / or used in different layers of multilayer films to achieve the desired properties. However, the use of more than one type of polymer complicates the task of recycling the resulting plastic packaging.
[0004] One approach to enabling recycling is a single-material solution, where only one type of polymeric material is used. This simplifies the recycling of post-consumer waste and manufacturing waste, but limits the range of available properties. As such, there is still a need for plastic packaging that can be formed from a single type of polymer, even though it comprises several different types of polymers within that polymer type, optimizing the mechanical, optical, and sealing properties required for packaging materials, while also... Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 12 / 167 2 / 42 which are easy to recycle. Summary of the Invention

Definitions
[0006] Unless otherwise defined, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as that commonly understood by an individual of ordinary skill in the art to which the invention pertains. However, any methods and materials similar or equivalent to those described herein may be used in practice to test the present invention, the preferred materials and methods being described herein. In the description and claims of the present invention, the following terminology shall be used in accordance with the definitions set forth below.
[0007] Unless clearly indicated otherwise, the use of the terms “a”, “an” and similar terms refers to one or more.
[0008] The following quantities are given as a % by weight (% by w), unless otherwise stated.
[0009] A propylene homopolymer is a polymer consisting essentially of propylene monomer units. Due to impurities, especially during commercial polymerization processes, a propylene homopolymer may comprise up to 0.1 mol% of comonomer units, preferably up to 0.05 mol% of comonomer units, and most preferably up to 0.01 mol% of comonomer units.
[0010] A propylene copolymer is a copolymer of propylene monomer units and comonomer units, preferably Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 14 / 167 4 / 42 selected from ethylene and C4-C8 alpha-olefins. A propylene random copolymer is a propylene copolymer in which the comonomer units are randomly distributed along the polymer chain, while a propylene block copolymer comprises blocks of propylene monomer units and blocks of comonomer units. Propylene random copolymers may comprise comonomer units of one or more different comonomers in their carbon atom quantities.
[0011] Typically, heterophasic propylene copolymers comprise: a) a crystalline matrix of propylene homopolymer or copolymer (M); and b) an elastomeric rubber, preferably a propylene-ethylene elastomer (E);
[0012] In the case of a heterophasic propylene random copolymer, said crystalline matrix phase is a propylene random copolymer and at least one alpha-olefin comonomer.
[0013] The elastomeric phase can be a propylene copolymer with a high comonomer content that is not randomly distributed in the polymer chain, but is distributed in a comonomer-rich block structure and a propylene-rich block structure. A heterophasic polypropylene copolymer is usually distinguished from a monophasic propylene copolymer by exhibiting two distinct glass transition temperatures Tg that are attributed to the matrix phase and the elastomeric phase.
[0014] The present invention will now be described in more detail. Detailed Description

[0028] The individual components will now be described in more detail. Heterophasic random copolymer of propylene-ethylene (RAHECO)

[0034] The absence of 2,1 regiodefects is an indication that the heterophasic random copolymer of propylene-ethylene (RAHECO) was polymerized in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst.
[0035] Therefore, preferably, the heterophasic random copolymer of Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 19 / 167 9 / 42 propylene-ethylene (RAHECO) was polymerized in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst.

This method is described below in the determination methods section. The crystalline fraction (CF) contains mostly the matrix phase and only a small portion of the elastomeric phase, and the soluble fraction (SF) contains mostly the elastomeric phase and only a small portion of the matrix phase. In some cases, this method results in more useful data, since the crystalline fraction (CF) and the soluble fraction (SF) correspond more accurately to the matrix and elastomeric phases, respectively.Due to differences in the separation methods of xylene extraction and the CRYSTEX QC method, the properties of the XCS / XCI fractions, on the one hand, and the crystalline / soluble (CF / SF) fractions, on the other, are not exactly the same, meaning that the amounts of the matrix phase and the elastomeric phase may differ, as well as their properties.
[0037] The random heterophasic copolymer of propylene-ethylene (RAHECO) preferably has an ethylene content (C2(total)), determined by CRYSTEX QC analysis, in the range of 3.0 to 15.0% by weight, more preferably in the range of 5.0 to 13.0% by weight, and most preferably in the range of 7.0 to 11.0% by weight.

[0044] It is also preferable that the intrinsic viscosity ratio of the soluble and crystalline fractions, (iV(SF) / iV(CF)), determined by CRYSTEX QC analysis, be in the range of 0.50 to 2.00, more preferably in the range of 0.75 to 1.50, with the highest preference in the range of 0.90 to 1.10. [0055] Therefore, it is still preferable that the first random copolymer of propylene-ethylene (R-PP1) has been polymerized in the presence of a single-site catalyst (SSC). Second random copolymer of propylene-ethylene (R-PP2)

[0125] The following definitions of terms and methods of determination apply to the general description of the invention above, including the claims, as well as to the examples below, unless defined otherwise. Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 35 / 167 25 / 42 Microstructure quantification by NMR spectroscopy
[0126] Quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to quantify the regiodefect and comonomer content of the polymers.
[0127] Quantitative 13C{1H} NMR spectra were recorded in the solution state using a Bruker Advance III 400 NMR spectrometer operating at 400.15 and 100.62 MHz for 1H and 13C, respectively. All spectra were recorded using a 10 mm extended temperature probe head optimized for 13C at 125 °C using nitrogen gas for all pneumatics. Approximately 200 mg of material were dissolved in approximately 3 ml of 1,2-tetrachloroethane-d2 (TCE-d2) together with chromium(III)-acetylacetonate (Cr(acac)3) resulting in a 65 mM relaxing agent solution in solvent {singh09}. To ensure a homogeneous solution, after initial sample preparation on a hot block, the NMR tube was further heated in a rotating furnace for at least 1 hour. Upon insertion of the magnet, the tube was rotated at 10 Hz.This configuration was chosen primarily for its high resolution and is quantitatively necessary for accurate quantification of ethylene content. Standard single-pulse excitation was employed without NOE, using an optimized tip angle, a recycle delay of 1, and a two-level WALTZ16 decoupling scheme {zhou07, busico07}. A total of 6144 (6 k) transients were acquired by spectra.
[0128] Quantitative 13C{1H} NMR spectra were processed, integrated, and relevant quantitative properties determined from the integrals using specific computer programs. All chemical shifts were indirectly referenced to the central methylene group of the ethylene block (EEE) at 30.00 ppm using solvent chemical shift. This approach allowed comparable referencing even when this structural unit was not present.
[0129] Characteristic signals corresponding to the incorporation of ethylene were observed {wang00, cheng84, randall89}. Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 36 / 167 26 / 42
[0130] The comonomer fraction was quantified using the method of Wang et al. {wang00} by integrating multiple signals across the entire spectral region in the 13C{1H} spectra. This method was chosen for its robust nature and ability to account for the presence of region defects when necessary. The integral regions were slightly adjusted to increase applicability across the entire range of comonomer content found.
[0131] For systems in which only isolated ethylene in PPEPP sequences was observed, the method of Wang et al. was modified to reduce the influence of non-zero integrals from sites known to be absent. This approach reduced the overestimation of ethylene content for such systems and was achieved by reducing the number of sites used to determine the absolute ethylene content to . By using this set of sites, the corresponding integral equation becomes Ps = Ia + (0.5 * Ib) Pt = Id + If + Id p = (ps + ρτ) / 2 e = 0.5 * (Ih + (0.5 * Ib)) fE = e / (e + p) using the same notation used in the article by Wang et al. {wang00}.
[0132] The comonomer incorporation percentage by mole was calculated from the mole fraction: E [% in mol] = 100 * fE
[0133] The comonomer incorporation in weight percent was calculated from the mole fraction: E [% by weight] = 100 * (fE * 28.06) / ((fE * 28.06) + ((1-fE) * 42.08))
[0134] Characteristic signals corresponding to regiodefects were observed {resconi00, wang00}. The presence of isolated 2,1-erythro regiodefects was indicated by the presence of two methyl sites at 17.7 and 17.2 ppm and confirmed by other characteristic sites. The presence of a 2,1-erythro regiodefect adjacent to an ethylene unit was indicated by the two Sae signals. Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, p. 37 / 167 27 / 42 are inequivalent to 34.9 ppm and 34.7 ppm, respectively, and Τγγ to 34.1 ppm.
[0135] The quantity of isolated 2,1-erythro regiodefects (isolated P2ie) was quantified using the integral mean of the two characteristic methyl sites at 17.7 (Ie8) and 17.4 (Ie6) ppm, respectively: P21e isolated = ( Ie6 + Ie8 ) / 2
[0136] The amount of 2,1 regiodefects adjacent to ethylene (PE21) was quantified using the methine site at 34.1 ppm (Iτγγ): Pe21 = Iτγγ
[0137] The total amount of propene (Ptotal) was quantified based on the methyl region (Ich3) between 23.0 and 19.9 ppm with correction made for sites included in this region not related to propene insertion. The methyl group Pyy resulting from the 2,1 regiodefect adjacent to ethylene is already present in Ich3: Ptotal = IcH3 + 2 * P21e isolated
[0138] Isolated 2,1-erythron regiodefects (isolated P21e) are multiplied by 2 to account for the two (2) propene units in the 2,1-erythron regiodefects.
[0139] The mole percentage of isolated 2,1-erythro regiodefects was quantified relative to the whole propene: [21e] % in mol = 100 * Isolated P21e / Total P
[0140] The mole percentage of 2,1 regiodefects adjacent to ethylene was quantified relative to the whole propene: [E21] % in mol = 100 * PE21 / Ptotal
[0141] The total number of 2.1 regiodefects was quantified as follows:
[21] % in mol = [21e] + [E21]
[0142] Characteristic signals corresponding to other types of regiodefects (insertion 2,1-treo, 3,1) were not observed {resconi00}. zhou07 Zhou, Z., Kuemmerle, R., Qiu, X., Redwine, D., Cong, R., Taha, A., Baugh, D. (2009), 475 randall89 Randall, J. Macromol. Sci., Rev. Macromol. Chem. Phys. 1989, C29, 201. analysis of CRYSTEX QC Crystalline and Solution Fraction Method
[0143] The crystalline (CF) and soluble (SF) fractions of the polypropylene (PP) compositions, as well as the comonomer content and intrinsic viscosities of the respective fractions, were analyzed using the CRYSTEX instrument, Polymer Char (Valencia, Spain). Details of the technique and method can be found in the literature (Ljiljana Jeremic, Andreas Albrecht, Martina Sandholzer & Markus Gahleitner (2020) Rapid characterization of high-impact ethylene-propylene copolymer composition by crystallization extraction separation: comparability to standard separation methods, International Journal of Polymer Analysis and Characterization, 25:8, 581-596).
[0144] The crystalline and amorphous fractions are separated by dissolution temperature cycles at 160 °C, crystallization at 40 °C and redissolution in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene at 160 °C. Quantification of SF and CF and determination of ethylene content (C2) are obtained by means of an integrated infrared detector (IR4) and for the determination of intrinsic viscosity (IV) an online 2-capillary viscometer is used.
[0145] The IR4 detector is a multi-wavelength detector that measures IR absorbance in two different bands (CH3 stretching vibration (centered at approx. 2960 cm-1) and CH stretching vibration (2700-3000 cm-1)) which are used for the determination of ethylene concentration and content in Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 39 / 167 29 / 42 ethylene-propylene copolymers. The IR4 detector is calibrated with a series of 8 EP copolymers with known ethylene content in the range of 2% by weight to 69% by weight (determined by 13C-NMR) and each at various concentrations, in the range of 2 and 13 mg / ml. To consider both features, concentration and ethylene content simultaneously for various polymer concentrations expected during Crystex analyses, the following calibration equations were applied: Conc = a + b*Abs(CH) + c*(Abs(CH))2 + d*Abs(CH3) + e*(Abs(CH3)2 + f*Abs(CH)*Abs(CH3) (Equation 1) CH3 / 1000C = a + b*Abs(CH) + c*Abs(CH3) + d*(Abs(CH3) / Abs(CH)) + e*(Abs(CH3) / Abs(CH))2 (Equation 2)

[0147] CH3 / IOOOC is converted to ethylene content in % by weight using the following relationship: % by weight (Ethylene in EP Copolymers) = 100 - CH3 / IOOOTC * 0.3 (Equation 3)
[0148] The amounts of Soluble Fraction (SF) and Crystalline Fraction (CF) are correlated through XS calibration to the amount of “Cold Soluble in Xylene” (XCS) and, respectively, the Cold Insoluble in Xylene (XCI) fractions, determined according to the standard gravimetric method in accordance with ISO16152. The XS calibration is obtained by testing various EP copolymers with XS content in the range of 2-31% by weight. The determined XS calibration is linear: % by weight of XS = 1.01 * % by weight of SF (Equation 4)
[0149] The intrinsic viscosity (IV) of the parent EP copolymer and its soluble and crystalline fractions are determined using a 2-capillary in-line viscometer and are correlated to the corresponding IVs determined by the standard decalin method according to ISO 1628-3. Calibration is achieved with several EP PP copolymers with IV = 2. Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 40 / 167 30 / 42 dl / g. The determined calibration curve is linear: IV (dl / g) = a* Vsp / c (equation 5)
[0150] The samples to be analyzed are weighed at concentrations of 10 mg / ml to 20 mg / ml. To avoid injecting possible gels and / or polymers that do not dissolve in TCB at 160 °C, such as PET and PA, the weighted sample was packed in a stainless steel mesh MW 0.077 / D 0.05 mm.
[0151] After automated filling of the flask with 1,2,4-TCB containing 250 mg / l of 2,6-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT) as an antioxidant, the sample is dissolved at 160 °C until complete dissolution is obtained, usually for 60 min, with constant stirring at 400 rpm. To prevent sample degradation, the polymer solution is covered with a N2 atmosphere during dissolution.
[0152] A defined volume of the sample solution is injected into the column packed with inert support where sample crystallization and separation of the soluble fraction from the crystalline part is occurring. This process is repeated twice. During the first injection, the entire sample is measured at high temperature, determining the IV[dl / g] and C2[% by weight] of the PP composition. During the second injection, the soluble fraction (at low temperature) and the crystalline fraction (at high temperature) with the crystallization cycle are measured (% by weight of SF, % by weight of C2, IV). Fusion Flow Rate
[0153] The melt flow rate (MFR) was determined according to ISO 1133 and is indicated in g / 10 min. The MFR is an indication of the flowability and therefore the processability of the polymer. The higher the melt flow rate, the lower the viscosity of the polymer. The MFR2 of polypropylene was determined at a temperature of 230 °C and a load of 2.16 kg. Density:
[0154] Density was measured according to ISO 1183-187. Sample preparation was performed by compression molding according to Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 41 / 167 31 / 42 the ISO 1872-2:2007 standard.
[0155] The xylene-soluble fraction at room temperature (XCS, % by weight): The amount of xylene-soluble polymer was determined at 25 °C according to ISO 16152; 5th edition; 1 / 07 / 2005.
[0156] DSC analysis, melting temperature (Tm) and heat of fusion (Hf), crystallization temperature (Tc) and heat of crystallization (Hc): measured with a TA Instrument Q200 differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) on samples of 5 to 7 mg. DSC was performed according to ISO 11357 / part 3 / method C2 in a heat / cold / heat cycle that has a scan rate of 10 °C / min in the temperature range of -30 to +225 °C. The crystallization temperature (Tc) and enthalpy of crystallization (Hc) were determined from the cooling step, while the melting temperature (Tm) and enthalpy of fusion (Hm) were determined from the second heating step. DDI ISO 7765-1:1988 / Method A
[0157] This test method covers the determination of the energy that causes films to fail under specific impact conditions of a dart falling freely from a specified height that would result in the failure of 50% of the tested specimens (Staircase A method). A uniform increment of missile mass is employed during the test and the missile weight is decreased or increased by the uniform increment after the test of each specimen, depending on the result (failure or no failure) observed for the specimen. Standard conditions: Conditioning time: > 96 h Test temperature: 23 °C Dart head material: phenolic. Dart diameter: 38 mm. Drop height: 660 mm. Results: • Impact failure mass [g] Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 42 / 167 32 / 42 • Minimum thickness [mm] • Maximum thickness [mm]
[0158] Tests according to ISO7765-1:1988 / Method A were performed on films with the indicated thickness and produced as described below in Examples and reported in grams (g).
[0159] DDI per unit thickness (in g / micron) is calculated by dividing DDI (in grams) by the film thickness (in microns) Opacity
[0160] Opacity was determined according to ASTM D1003-00 directly on the multilayer film produced in the experimental section. Seal range experiments (SIT, maximum sealing force and SET)
[0161] This method is used to determine the sealing window (sealing temperature range) of films. The procedure is similar to the hot adhesion test and is performed on the same machine. In contrast to the hot adhesion test, the determined sealing range corresponds to the seal strength after cooling (a delay time of 30 s). The conditions used are as follows: • Sealing time (1 s) • Sealing pressure (0.4 N / mm2) • Delay time (30 s) • Clamp separation rate (42 mm / s) Sealing range = (Initial sealing temperature to final sealing temperature)
[0162] The results obtained provide a quantitatively useful indication of the sealing strength of the films and indicate the temperature range for the ideal seal.
[0163] The lower limit (Sealing Initiation Temperature - SIT) is the sealing temperature at which an average sealing force of 5 N is measured (i.e., the lowest temperature at which such Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 43 / 167 33 / 42 force is measured). The upper limit (Sealing End Temperature - SET) is identified as the first sealing temperature at which at least two specimens exhibited a burn failure mode. The maximum sealing force corresponds to the highest sealing force measured.
[0164] The temperature range is set to 5 °C by default, but may be reduced to 1 °C when the curve shows a sharp increase or decrease in force values between two temperature steps. This is done to better represent a curve profile.
[0165] Unlike the ASTM F1921-12 standard, the seal pressure, cooling time, and test speed test parameters are modified. The determination of the force / temperature curve continues until thermal failure of the film. In addition to the failure mode evaluations described in the standard, additional failure modes are used. Sealing resistance
[0166] Thermal sealing experiments were performed on at least 3 film samples 85 mm wide by 200 mm long cut in the machine direction. Teflon-coated steel heating rods 5 mm x 150 mm were set to a temperature of 110 °C. Two films were sealed by positioning, one on top of the other, using a sealing time of 0.5 s and a pressure of 0.67 N / mm2. The resulting sealed area was 85 mm x 5 mm. The specimens were then conditioned for 7 days (± 24 h) at 23 °C (± 2 °C) / 50% RH (± 10%). Ten specimens, 15 mm wide, were cut and tensile tested at 23 °C (± 2 °C) / 50% RH (± 10%) on a Universal Testing Machine (Zwick Z005). A gripping distance of 100 mm and a test speed of 200 mm / min were used. Yield strength and maximum strength were measured for each test specimen. Basic sealing: • Film width: 85 mm • Film length: > 200 mm • Sealed seam width: 5 mm Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, page 44 / 167 34 / 42 • Sealing temperature: 110 °C • Sealing pressure: 0.67 N / mm2 • Sealing time: 0.5 s • Sealing jaws: Teflon coated Conditioning • Conditioning time: 7 days (± 24 h) at 23 °C (± 2 °C) / 50% RH (± 10%) Thermal sealing resistance: • Test temperature: 23 °C (± 2 °C) / 50% RH (± 10%) • Specimen width: 15 mm • Grip distance: 100 mm • Test speed: 200 mm / min • Test device: Universal Testing Machine Traction module
[0167] The tensile modulus in the machine and in the transverse direction was determined according to ISO 527-3 at 23 °C in multilayer films produced in the experimental section. The test was performed at a transverse head speed of 1 mm / min. Steam sterilization
[0168] Steam sterilization was performed on a Systec D series machine (Systec Inc., USA). Samples were heated at a rate of 5 °C / min from 23 °C. After being held for 30 min at 130 °C, they were immediately removed from the steam sterilizer and stored at room temperature before processing or testing. 2. Examples 2.1 Synthesis of heterophasic propylene-ethylene copolymers (RAHECO, HECO1 and HECO2)
[0169] For the HECO2 polymerization process, a Ziegler-Natta type catalyst was used, as used in the inventive examples of document WO2016 / 066446 A1 and pre-polymerized with vinylcyclohexane to obtain the Petition 870250078585, dated 03 / 09 / 2025, p. 45 / 167 35 / 42 nucleation with poly(vinylcyclohexane).
[0170] Nucleation by prepolymerization with vinylcyclohexane is described in detail in documents EP290256 B1 and EP2960279B1.
[0171] For the polymerization process of RAHECO and HECO 1, the same catalyst was used, except that no prepolymerization with vinylcyclohexane was carried out (i.e., simply the catalyst used for the inventive examples of document WO 2016 / 066446 A1 was used).
[0172] The catalyst systems defined above were used in combination with triethylaluminum (TEAL) as a cocatalyst and dicyclopentadienyldimethoxysilane (Donor D) as an external donor.
