[00041] The divider-forming portion 175 of the bottom panel 149 may be arranged so that the first section 179 is folded at least partially upwards at the fold line 177 in a generally oblique arrangement with the bottom wall-forming portion 173 and so that the second section 181 is folded at least partially downwards at the fold line 183 so as to be in a generally oblique arrangement with the first section 179 to form a divider 223 in the interior 107 of the tray 105. In some embodiments, an edge or surface of the second section 181 of the bottom panel 149 may contact an edge or surface of the bottom panels 153, 157. Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, page 19 / 32 14 / 26
[00042] The arrangement of panels and features mentioned above can be at least partially maintained with one or more applications of an adhesive, such as glue. In some embodiments, and as described further below, a forming system can be provided with features that facilitate the arrangement of panels, end tabs and blank part features 103 to form the tray 105.
[00043] The raised configuration of tray 105 provides a back wall 225 formed by the overlapping arrangement of back panels 145, 149, 153, 157 and from which dividers 217, 219, 221, 223 extend at least partially to provide compartments or partitions within 107 of tray 105.
[00044] In some embodiments, the respective bottom wall forming portions 161, 173, 189, 203, 205 of the respective bottom panels 145, 149, 153, 157 may form the bottom wall 225 of tray 105 and the dividers 217, 219, 221, 223 may be positioned extending upwards from the bottom wall 225 of tray 105. In other embodiments, one or more of the dividers 217, 219, 221, 223 may form a portion of the bottom wall 225 of tray 105.
[00045] In some embodiments, one or more spaces or gaps between the respective dividers 217, 219, 221, 223 and the rest of the tray 105 may provide one or more outlet paths, for example, for ventilation, fluid drainage, etc.
[00046] In some embodiments, a compartment may be at least partially defined between divider 217 and a portion of the side wall 215 of tray 105, a compartment may be formed between divider 217 and divider 219, a compartment may be formed between divider 219 and divider Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, page 20 / 32 15 / 26 221, a compartment may be formed between divider 221 and divider 223 and a compartment may be formed between divider 223 and a portion of side wall 215. It will be understood that a different arrangement of compartments may be formed within 107 of tray 105 without departing from disclosure.
[00047] In some embodiments, dividers 217, 219, 221, 223 can provide such partitions within 107 of tray 105 to separate at least partially one or more food products, such as biscuits or other doughs, crackers, savory snacks, sweets, other food items, etc., within 107 of tray 105.
[00048] Furthermore, the overlapping arrangement of end panels 129, 133 and side panels 137, 141 provides the tray 105 with a robust construction that resists deformation, bending, crushing, etc. In this respect, one or more of the end panels 129, 133 and side panels 137, 141 can be considered reinforcing features of the tray 105.
[00049] As shown in Fig. 2, in some embodiments, a lid / cover structure, such as a T-lid film, may comprise a packaging film that is a thin layer of plastic used to preserve and protect a food item contained in the tray 105 and may be removablely attached to the flange 121 of the tray 105, for example, defined by a portion of the central panel 111. Such a T-lid film may cover the flange 121 of the tray 105 so as to cover the interior 107 of the tray 105. In some embodiments, a hermetic seal of the interior 107 of the tray 105 may be achieved by such engagement by a T-lid film.
[00050] Any plastic film, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, page 21 / 32 16 / 26 polyamide and ethylene vinyl alcohol, or other suitable material, can be used to form the cover film that is sealed against the sealing surface of the flange / center panel 111. Additionally, adhesives can be used between the cover film and the sealing surface of the flange / center panel without causing separation.
[00051] With continued reference to Fig. 3, it will be understood that, in embodiments, a liner, such as liner F, can be applied to at least the interior 107 of tray 105 and can overlap seams / intersection points between the respective panels, for example, so that tray 105 has leak-resistant properties. Tray 105 is illustrated with liner F applied to one or more of its internal surfaces in Fig. 7. Liner F can be separably connected to one or more surfaces of tray 105 along its interior 107, for example, so that liner F and tray 105 can be disposed of separately after use. In this respect, the separable arrangement of tray 105 and liner F can facilitate the separate reuse, renewal, recycling, etc. of the cardboard material forming tray 105 and the polymeric material forming liner F, without mixing them.
[00052] In one embodiment, tray 105 can be formed in a manner similar to the formation of containers as shown and described in the incorporated applications by reference (for example, Application '425, Application '814 and / or Application '131).
[00053] In an exemplary embodiment shown schematically in Fig. 4, the blank 103 / tray 105 or a folded configuration thereof can be placed in a lower mold 315 of a system 317 and a lining material or sheet. Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, p. 22 / 32 17 / 26 of film 319 (e.g., a polyethylene or PET mesh) can be fed from a supply roll 321 above the blank 103 / folded blank 103. An upper mold 323 has a heating plate surface 325 having a PTFE coating, for example, a Teflon® coating. Alternatively, the heating plate surface 325 may have a coating of any suitable material or the coating may be omitted.
[00054] As shown schematically in Fig. 4, the upper mold 323 may include a plurality of holes or ducts 327 on the surface of the heating plate 325 to apply vacuum and / or air pressure to the sheet 319. The lower mold 315 and / or the upper mold 323, including the ducts 327 and / or the heating plate 325, could otherwise be shaped, arranged, positioned and / or configured without deviating from the disclosure. For example, the heating plate 325 could be omitted and heat could alternatively be applied to the sheet 319 (e.g., with a hot air stream).
[00055] In the illustrated embodiment, the lower mold 315 may contain the blank 103 / bent blank 103 over a cavity 314 in the lower mold 315 while supporting the blank 103 / tray 105 on the central panel 111 and / or on the clamping panels 113, 117 (for example, so that the central panel 111 faces upwards). An initial vacuum may be applied to the ducts 327 to pull the film sheet 319 towards the upper mold 323, the upper mold 323 may be heated to a suitable temperature to soften the film sheet 319 and / or to activate a heat-seal layer. Instead of, or in addition to, the initial vacuum, air pressure under the film sheet 319 may be employed with similar or equal effect. Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, p. 23 / 32 18 / 26 Subsequently, the film sheet 319 can be forced down (for example, by air pressure applied through ducts 327 and / or a vacuum applied from below the blank 103 / tray 105).
[00056] Air pressure can move film sheet 319 towards blank 103 / tray 105 and the lower mold 315 can support blank 103 / tray 105 when film sheet 319 is applied to portions of one or more of flange 121, end panels 129, 133 and side panels 137, 141 to form liner F.
[00057] As shown, in some embodiments, the lower mold 315 (broadly, forming mold) may be provided with a plurality of projections 316 extending upwards into the cavity 314 to facilitate the formation of one or more of the dividers 217, 219, 221, 223.For example, the protrusions 316 can provide the respective raised surfaces on which: the first section 167 and the second section 169 of the divider-forming portion 163 of the bottom panel 145 can be folded along the respective fold lines 165, 171 to form the divider 217; the divider-forming portion 207 of the bottom panel 157 and the divider-forming portion 191 of the bottom panel 153 can be folded along the respective fold lines 209, 193 to form the divider 219; the divider-forming portion 195 of the bottom panel 153 and the divider-forming portion 211 of the bottom panel 157 can be folded along the respective fold lines 197, 213 to form the divider 221; and the first section 179 and the second section 181 of the divider-forming portion 175 of the bottom panel 149 can be folded along the respective fold lines 177, 183 to form the divider 223. In this respect, the respective... Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, page 24 / 32 19 / 26 projections 316 can generally be wedge-shaped, as shown, or they can have a different configuration, for example, pillars, ribs, etc. to facilitate such formation of dividers 217, 219, 221, 223.
[00058] In some embodiments, the liner F can help retain the tray 105 in its tray shape after the liner F is applied to the blank 103 / bent blank 103 / tray 105. For example, in some embodiments, attaching the liner F to the tray 105 can at least partially maintain the oblique arrangement of the divider-forming portions 191, 207 and divider-forming portions 195, 211.
[00059] In some embodiments, the tray 105 can be ejected from the lower mold 315 and transported away from the forming tool on a conveyor, for example.
[00060] In one embodiment, tray 105 can be formed from blank 103 and have liner F applied to it at a much higher rate than systems that separately form tray 105 from blank 103 and then place this formed tray 105 into the lower mold 315. In one example, tray 105 of the present embodiment can be formed from blank 103 together with liner F at a rate of approximately 200 trays per minute. Tray 105 can otherwise be formed without clearance. For example, tray 105 could be formed from blank 103 before applying liner F (e.g., before engaging the lower mold 315).
[00061] Any of the features of the various disclosure modes may be combined, replaced, or otherwise configured with other features of other disclosure modes. Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, p. 25 / 32 20 / 26 disclosure without deviating from the scope of this disclosure.
[00062] Optionally, one or more portions of the raw piece or other constructs described or contemplated in this document may be coated with varnish, clay, or other materials, either individually or in combination. The coating may be printed with product advertising or other information or images. Raw pieces or other constructs may also be selectively coated and / or printed so that less than the entire surface area of the model or substantially the entire surface area of the model may be coated and / or printed.
[00063] Any of the blank parts, trays, or other constructs of this disclosure may optionally include one or more features that alter the effect of microwave energy during the heating or cooking of a food item that is associated with the tray or other construct. For example, the blank part, tray, container, or other construct may be formed at least partially from one or more microwave energy interactive elements (hereinafter sometimes referred to as microwave interactive elements) that promote heating, browning, and / or crisping of a particular area of the food item, protect a specific area of the food item from microwave energy to prevent overcooking, or transmit microwave energy toward or away from a specific area of the food item. Each microwave interactive element comprises one or more microwave energy interactive materials or segments arranged in a particular configuration to absorb microwave energy, transmit microwave energy, reflect microwave energy, or direct energy. Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, page 26 / 32 21 / 26 microwave, as needed or desired for a given construct and food item.
[00064] In the case of a susceptor or shield, the microwave-interactive material may comprise an electroconductive or semiconductive material, for example, a vacuum-deposited metal or metal alloy, or a metallic ink, an organic ink, an inorganic ink, a metallic paste, an organic paste, an inorganic paste, or any combination thereof. Examples of metals and metallic alloys that may be suitable include, but are not limited to, alloys of aluminum, chromium, copper, Inconel (nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with niobium), iron, magnesium, nickel, stainless steel, tin, titanium, tungsten, and any combination or alloy thereof.
[00065] Alternatively, the microwave-energy-interactive material may comprise a metal oxide, for example, aluminum, iron, and tin oxides, optionally used in conjunction with an electrically conductive material. Another suitable metal oxide is indium tin oxide (ITO). ITO has a more uniform crystalline structure and is therefore transparent at most coating thicknesses.
[00066] Alternatively, the interactive microwave energy material may comprise an electroconductive, semiconductive or nonconductive artificial dielectric or ferroelectric. Artificial dielectrics comprise conductive material subdivided in a polymeric or other suitable matrix or binder, and may include flakes of an electroconductive metal, for example, aluminum.
[00067] In other embodiments, the interactive microwave energy material may be carbon-based, for example, Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, page 27 / 32 22 / 26 as disclosed in U.S. Patents Nos. 4,943,456, 5,002,826, 5,118,747 and 5,410,135.
[00068] In still other embodiments, microwave-interactive material can interact with the magnetic portion of electromagnetic energy in the microwave oven. Correctly chosen materials of this type can self-limit based on the loss of interaction when the material's Curie temperature is reached. An example of such an interactive coating is described in U.S. Patent No. 4,283,427.
[00069] The use of other interactive microwave energy elements is also contemplated. In one example, the interactive microwave energy element may comprise a sheet or evaporated material of high optical density having sufficient thickness to reflect a substantial portion of the impact microwave energy. Such elements are normally formed from a conductive or reflective metal or metal alloy, for example, aluminum, copper, or stainless steel, in the form of a solid adhesive, generally having a thickness of about 0.000285 inch to about 0.005 inch, for example, about 0.0003 inch to about 0.003 inch. Other such elements may have a thickness of about 0.00035 inch to about 0.002 inch, for example, 0.0016 inch.
[00070] In some cases, microwave energy reflective (or reflective) elements can be used as protective elements where food is subject to burning or drying out during heating. In other cases, smaller microwave energy reflective elements can be used to diffuse or reduce the intensity of microwave energy. An example of a material that utilizes such elements Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, page 28 / 32 Microwave energy reflectors (23 / 26) are commercially available from Graphic Packaging International, Inc. (Atlanta, GA) under the trade name MicroRite® packaging material. In other examples, a plurality of microwave energy reflectors may be arranged to form a microwave energy distribution element to direct microwave energy to specific areas of the food item. If desired, the handles may have a length that causes the microwave energy to resonate, thus increasing the distribution effect. Microwave energy distribution elements are described in U.S. Patents 6,204,492, 6,433,322, 6,552,315, and 6,677,563, each of which is incorporated by reference in its entirety.
[00071] If desired, any of the numerous interactive microwave energy elements described or contemplated herein may be substantially continuous, i.e., without substantial breaks or interruptions, or it may be discontinuous, for example, including one or more breaks or openings that transmit microwave energy. The breaks or openings may extend throughout the structure or only through one or more layers. The number, shape, size, and positioning of such breaks or openings may vary for a specific application, depending on the type of construct being formed, the food item to be heated in or on it, the desired degree of shielding, browning, and / or crispness, whether direct exposure to microwave energy is necessary or desired to obtain uniform heating of the food item, the need to regulate the temperature change of the food item by direct heating, and whether and to what extent Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, page 29 / 32 24 / 26 is needed for ventilation.
[00072] By way of illustration, a microwave energy-interactive element may include one or more transparent areas to effect dielectric heating of the food item. However, where the microwave energy-interactive element comprises a susceptor, such openings decrease the total microwave energy-interactive area and therefore decrease the amount of microwave energy-interactive material available to heat, brown, and / or toast the surface of the food item. Thus, the relative amounts of microwave energy-interactive areas and transparent microwave energy areas can be balanced to achieve the desired overall heating characteristics for the specific food item.
[00073] As another example, one or more portions of a susceptor may be designed to be inactive by microwave energy to ensure that microwave energy is efficiently focused on the areas to be heated, browned, and / or toasted, rather than being lost to portions of the food not intended to be toasted and / or toasted or to the heating environment. Additionally or alternatively, it may be beneficial to create one or more discontinuities or inactive regions to prevent overheating or charring of the food item and / or the construct including the susceptor.
[00074] As yet another example, a susceptor may incorporate one or more fusible elements that limit the propagation of cracks in the susceptor and thus control overheating in areas of the susceptor where heat transfer to the food is low and the susceptor may tend to get too hot. The size and shape of the fusible elements may be Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, p. 30 / 32 25 / 26 as needed. Examples of susceptors including such fuses are provided, for example, in U.S. Patent 5,412,187, U.S. Patent 5,530,231, U.S. Patent Application Publication. US No. 2008 / 0035634A1, published on February 14, 2008, and Publication of International Application PCT No. WO 2007 / 127371, published on November 8, 2007, each of which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.
[00075] All dimensional information presented in this document is intended to be illustrative of certain aspects, features, etc., of various embodiments of the disclosure and is not intended to limit the scope of the disclosure. The dimensions of the raw parts, containers, training tools, features, or any other dimension, may be more or less than what is shown and described in this disclosure, without departing from the scope of this disclosure, and may be within the listed ranges of dimensions for each feature or outside the listed ranges of dimensions for each feature without departing from the scope of this disclosure.
[00076] The blank parts according to the present invention can, for example, be formed from coated cardboard and similar materials. For example, the inner and / or outer sides of the blank parts can be coated with a clay coating. The clay coating can then be printed with product, advertising, price coding and other information or images. The blank parts can then be coated with a varnish to protect any information printed on the blank parts. The blank parts can also be coated with, for example, a moisture barrier layer, on one or both sides of the blank parts. Petition 870260068520, dated 10 / 07 / 2026, pp. 31 / 32 26 / 26
[00077] According to the exemplary embodiments, the blanks may be constructed of cardboard of a gauge such that it is heavier and stiffer than ordinary paper. The blanks may also be constructed of other materials, such as cardboard, stiff paper, or any other material with suitable properties to enable the cardboard packaging to function at least generally as described above.
[00078] The preceding description illustrates and describes various embodiments of the present disclosure.
