Description
[001] The present invention relates to a cardboard box and a blank for forming the same; more specifically, but not exclusively, to a cardboard box comprising a carrying handle to facilitate the transport of the cardboard box. BACKGROUND
[002] In the packaging sector, it is often necessary to provide consumers with packaging consisting of multiple containers (multipacks) for primary products. Such multiple packs are desirable for transport and distribution purposes, as well as for displaying promotional information. For cost and environmental reasons, such cardboard boxes or carriers need to be formed from the least possible amount of material and cause the least possible waste of the materials from which they are formed. Another factor to be considered is the strength of the packaging and its suitability for containing and transporting large quantities of items.
[003] It is desirable to provide a cardboard box that has a carrying handle to facilitate carrying the cardboard box.
[004] The present invention seeks to overcome or at least mitigate the problems of the prior art. SUMMARY
[005] According to a first aspect of the present invention, a cardboard box is provided for packaging one or more articles. The cardboard box comprises a handle wall and a carrying handle. The handle wall comprises a pair of overlapping first and second panels. The carrying handle comprises a first handle flap articulated to the overlapping first panel by means of a first articulated connection and a second Petition 870250085558, dated 09 / 22 / 2025, p. 7 / 60 2 / 34 handle flap articulated to the second overlapping panel via a second articulated connection. The first and second handle flaps are positioned in an overlapping arrangement. The first and second handle flaps each have a distal end edge opposite the respective first and second articulated connections. The distal end edges are defined by a parting line that extends entirely through the handle wall.
[006] Advantageously, the handle wall can be formed from an end wall of a cardboard box, the end wall closing a tubular structure formed by a plurality of main panels; the end wall being formed by a plurality of end-closing panels. The cardboard box may comprise a detachable opening provided with at least one, two or more main panels, the carrying handle and the detachable opening may be configured and positioned relative to each other so that the integrity or strength of the cardboard box is not compromised or at least any reduction is minimized. Positioning the carrying handle on the end wall may also have the benefit of increasing the space available for providing the detachable opening, so that a larger detachable portion can be defined than would otherwise be available.
[007] In some forms, the carrying handle is assembled and formed by attaching the first and second overlapping panels after loading the cardboard box with one or more items.
[008] Providing a carrying handle on the end wall can be even more advantageous for removing the cardboard box from a shelf or display unit, when a carrying handle is provided on each of a pair of opposite end walls, a carrying handle is available to a user, regardless of Petition 870250085558, dated 09 / 22 / 2025, p. 8 / 60 3 / 34 fearing which terminal wall is presented to it.
[009] In some embodiments, the carrying handle may be oriented perpendicular to the direction of the paper fiber or machine, with the parting line extending orthogonally to the direction of the paper fiber or machine. When a detachable opening is provided, the parting line of the detachable opening may comprise portions that extend parallel or obliquely to the direction of the paper fiber or machine. The parting line may extend towards the parallel or obliquely extended portions of the parting line of the detachable opening and terminate in a spaced relationship to them.
[0010] Optionally, the parting line extends to at least one panel connected in a hinged manner to one of the pairs of overlapping first and second panels, the parting line terminating with a stop cut located in said at least one panel.
[0011] Optionally, the cardboard box comprises a plurality of main panels to form a tubular structure and said at least one panel is provided by one of said main panels.

[0058] The 90 cardboard box can be formed through a series of sequential folding operations on a straight-line machine, so that the 90 cardboard box does not need to be rotated or inverted to complete its construction. The folding process is not limited to that described below and can be altered according to specific manufacturing requirements. During loading and assembly of the 90 cardboard box, it can be oriented so that one of the upper or lower panels 14, 18 forms a loading surface. The bases of one or more articles may be in sliding contact with the loading surface when inserted into the 90 cardboard box. The articles may have a substantially cylindrical shape and a cylindrical axis. Figure 1 shows the orientation of the items relative to the blank 10; the dashed lines illustrated on the upper or lower panels 14, 18 indicate the footprint B of the items. The cylindrical shaft is oriented perpendicularly to the upper panel 14 e. Petition 870250085558, dated 09 / 22 / 2025, p. 23 / 60 18 / 34 can also be oriented in a substantially vertical manner.
[0059] The first 22A, 24A terminal closure panels, 26A, 28A, or, alternatively, the second terminal closure panels 22B, 24B, 26B, 28B, form the top panel (upper wall) 22A / 24A / 26A / 28A when the handle structure H1 / H2 is being used as a carrying handle by a user and such top wall is optionally positioned adjacent to the sides of the articles. In this orientation, the top wall 22A / 24A / 26A / 28A, 22B / 24B / 26B / 28B is not positioned substantially flat in relation to the top or bottom of the articles contained in the cardboard box 90. In other words, the cylindrical axis of the articles is substantially parallel to the plane of the top wall 22A / 24A / 26A / 28A, 22B / 24B / 26B / 28B of the cardboard box 90.
[0060] The second terminal closure panels 22B, 24B, 26B, 28B, or alternatively, the first terminal closure panels 22A, 24A, 26A, 28A, form the base panel 22B / 24B / 26B / 28B when the handle structure H1 / H2 is in use as a carrying handle by a user. The base panel 18 may form the base panel 18 when items are being dispensed from the cardboard box 90 or when the cardboard box 90 is resting on a surface, such as a shelf. Thus, it should be understood that the descriptive terms top, base, and side do not necessarily limit the cardboard box 90 to adopting a specific orientation, but serve to distinguish these panels from one another. In other embodiments, the cylindrical axis of the articles may be oriented differently with respect to the upper wall 14 of the cardboard box 90. For example, but without limitation, the cylindrical axis of the articles may be oriented substantially perpendicular to the plane of the upper wall 14 of the cardboard box 90.
[0061] Returning to the construction of the cardboard box 90, as Petition 870250085558, dated 09 / 22 / 2025, page 24 / 60 19 / 34 illustrated in Figure 2, the blank 10 is folded around the crease line 17 so that the base panel 18 is positioned in an overlapping relationship with the second side wall panel 16 and the top panel 14 and so that the fixing panel 20 is positioned in a frontal contact relationship with the top panel 14.
[0062] Glue or other adhesive treatment is applied to an external surface of the fixing panel 20. Alternatively, glue or other adhesive treatment may be applied to a corresponding edge portion of an internal surface of the first side wall panel 12.
[0063] The blank 10 is folded around the crease line 13 so that the first side wall panel 12 is positioned in an overlapping relationship to the fixing panel 20 and part of the top panel 14. The first side wall panel 12 is therefore fixed to the fixing panel 20, which forms a manufacturer's seam; the manufacturer's seam is normally formed before transport to a conversion facility where product loading takes place.
[0064] Blank 10 is then formed into a flat, collapsible tubular frame that can be easily shipped or distributed to a conversion facility, where the flat, collapsible tubular frame can be assembled into an open tubular frame and loaded with articles.
[0065] The flat, retracted tubular structure can be assembled to form an open-end tubular structure by unfolding the first side panel 12 relative to the top panel 14 so that the first side panel 12 is positioned substantially perpendicular to the top panel 14.
[0066] The 90 cardboard box, in its open tubular format, can be loaded with items through one or both open ends. It is important to note that, in some forms, a Petition 870250085558, dated 09 / 22 / 2025, p. 25 / 60 20 / 34 of the open ends of the 90g cardboard box can be closed before loading the interior with items through the remaining open end.
[0067] After the cardboard box 90 is loaded with items, the open ends of the cardboard box 90 are closed.
[0068] One end of the tubular structure is closed by folding the first end closure panel 22A around the crease line 23A and folding the third end closure panel 26A around the crease line 27A.
[0069] The fourth terminal closure panel 28A is then folded around the crease line 29A to be placed in contact with the first and third terminal closure panels 22A, 26A.
[0070] GL glue or other adhesive treatment is applied to the outer surfaces of the fourth terminal closure panel 28A and the first and third terminal closure panels 22A, 26A, best shown in Figure 3.
[0071] The second terminal closure panel 24A (not shown in Figure 3) is then folded around the crease line 25A to be placed in contact with the fourth terminal closure panel 28A and, optionally, in contact with the first and third terminal closure panels 22A, 26A, specifically the embossed regions Em.
[0072] The second terminal closure panel 24A is fixed to the fourth terminal closure panel 28A. The second terminal closure panel 24A can be fixed to the first and third terminal closure panels 22A, 26A.
[0073] It will be recognized that the second terminal closure panel 24A can therefore be fixed to each of the second, third and fourth closure panels 22A, 26A, 28A with a single application of glue; the second parts 60B, 62B of the pair of tabs along Petition 870250085558, dated 09 / 22 / 2025, page 26 / 60 21 / 34 pieces 60A / 60B, 62A / 62B fixed to the first parts 60A, 62A of the pair of elongated tabs 60A / 60B, 62A / 62B by the same application of glue. It was found that the gluing performed by the conversion installation, typically hot gluing, after loading with articles is sufficient to employ the terminal closure panels 22A, 24A, 26A, 28A, 22B, 24B, 26B, 28B as a handle panel 22A / 24A / 26A / 28A, 22B / 24B / 26B / 28B.
[0074] In other embodiments, alternative fastening means may be employed to fasten the terminal closure panels 22A, 24A, 26A, 28A, 22B, 24B, 26B, 28B, for example, but without limitation, mechanical locking devices, such as clips or perforated locks integrally formed within the terminal closure panels 22A, 24A, 26A, 28A, 22B, 24B, 26B, 28B.
[0075] A second end of the tubular structure is closed by folding the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth end closure panels 22B, 24B, 26B, 28B in a manner substantially similar to that described above in relation to the first end closure panels 22A, 24A, 26A, 28A.
[0076] Figure 2 illustrates the assembled cardboard box 90 forming a package with a plurality of items.
[0077] With reference to Figure 2, the cardboard box 90 comprises a detachable opening D located, in part, in the top panel 14 and, in part, in the second side wall 16 and when the detachable portion 14D / 16D is removed, an opening is created.
[0078] Referring now to Figure 4, an additional embodiment of the present invention is shown. The first Petition 870250085558, dated 09 / 22 / 2025, pp. 37 / 60 32 / 34 and the second terminal closure panels 24A and 28A constitute the outermost layers of the loop wall, which is a terminal closure wall.
[00109] It will be recognized that various modifications can be made within the scope of the present invention. For example, the size and shape of the panels and openings can be adjusted to accommodate items of different sizes or shapes.
[00110] It will be recognized that, as used in this document, directional references such as top, bottom, base, front, back, end, side, inside, outside, top and bottom do not necessarily limit the respective panels to such orientation, but may only serve to distinguish these panels from one another.
[00111] As used in this document, the terms hinged connection and crease line refer to all types of lines that define the folding characteristics of the blank, facilitate the folding portions of the blank relative to each other, or otherwise indicate the ideal folding locations of the panel for the blank. Any reference to hinged connection should not be interpreted as necessarily referring to a single crease line; in fact, a hinged connection can be formed from two or more crease lines, where each of the two or more crease lines can be straight / linear or curved / curvilinear. When linear crease lines form a hinged connection, they may be positioned parallel to each other or slightly inclined relative to each other. When curved crease lines form a hinged connection, they can intersect to define a molded panel within the area enclosed by the curved crease lines. A typical example of such a hinged connection might comprise a pair of arched or convex crease lines that intersect at the same time. Petition 870250085558, dated 09 / 22 / 2025, pp. 38 / 60 33 / 34 two points so as to define an elliptical panel between them. A hinged connection may be formed by one or more linear crease lines and one or more curved crease lines. A typical example of such a hinged connection may comprise a combination of a linear crease line and an arched crease line that intersect at two points so as to define a half-moon shaped panel between them.
[00112] As used in this document, the term crease line may refer to one of the following: a creased line, an embossed line, a marked line, a perforation line, a short groove line, a half-cut line, a single half-cut, a broken parting line, an aligned groove line, a cut line, and any combination of the above options.
[00113] It should be understood that articulated connections and crease lines may include elements formed into the blank substrate, including perforations, a perforation line, a short groove line, a half-cut line, a single half-cut, a parting line, an interrupted parting line, grooves, creases, any combination thereof and the like. The elements may be dimensioned and positioned to impart the desired functionality. For example, a perforation line may be dimensioned or designed with degrees of weakness to define a crease line or a parting line, or both. The perforation line may be designed to facilitate bending and resist breakage, to facilitate bending and facilitate breakage with more effort, or to facilitate breakage with little effort.
[00114] The expression "in tune with," as used in this document, refers to the alignment of two or more elements in an assembled cardboard box, such as an opening formed in Petition 870250085558, dated 09 / 22 / 2025, pp. 39 / 60 34 / 34 a first of two overlapping panels and a second opening formed in a second of two overlapping panels. These elements, in tune with each other, can be aligned with each other in the direction of the thickness of the overlapping panels. For example, when an opening in a first panel is in tune with a second opening in a second panel that is placed in an overlapping arrangement with the first panel, an edge of the opening can extend along at least a portion of an edge of the second opening and can be aligned, in the direction of the thickness of the first and second panels, with the second opening.
