Description
1 / 74 Aggregation of signal reference bandwidth for signaling probes on the network during measurement reporting. POSITIONING TECHNICAL FIELD
[001] This disclosure relates to wireless communication systems and, more particularly, to the aggregation of signal reference signal bandwidth in the network during position measurement reporting. BACKGROUND
[002] FIG. 1 illustrates an example of a new radio network (“NR”) (e.g., a 5th Generation (5G) network) including a 5G core network (5GC) 130, network nodes 120a-b (e.g., 5G base station (gNB)), multiple communication devices 110 (also referred to as user equipment (UE)).
[003] FIG. 2 illustrates an example of an NR architecture to support NR positioning. In this example, the NR location node is a location management function (LMF). There are also interactions between the location node and the gNodeB via the NR Positioning Protocol A (NRPPa). Interactions between the gNodeB and the device are supported via the Radio Resource Control (RRC) protocol, while the location node interfaces with the UE via the LTE Positioning Protocol (LPP). LPP is common to both NR and LTE. Although FIG. 2 shows a gNB and an ng-eNB, both may not always be present. Additionally, when both gNB and ng-eNB are present, NG-C is usually present only for one of them.
[004] Currently, NR supports the following radio access technology (RAT) dependent positioning procedures: 1) Down-of-Arrival Link Time Difference (DL-TDOA); 2) Time Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 237 / 357 2 / 74 multi-round trip time (RTT”); 3) Arrival Ascending Link Time Difference (UL-TDOA”); 4) Departure Descending Link Angle (DL-AoD”); 5) Arrival Ascending Link Angle (UL-AoA”); and 6) Enhanced NR Cell Identifier (NR-ECID”).
[005] The DL TDOA positioning procedure makes use of the downlink reference signal time difference (RSTD”) (and optionally the DL positioning reference signal received power (RSRP”) (and PRS”) (and) of downlink signals received from multiple transmission points (TPs) in the UE. The UE measures the DL RSTD (and optionally the DL PRS RSRP) of the received signals using assistance data received from the positioning server, and the resulting measurements are used along with other configuration information to locate the UE relative to neighboring TPs.
[006] The Multi-RTT positioning procedure makes use of UE and DL PRS RSRP measurements of downlink signals received from multiple transmit / receive points (TRPs) measured by UE and gNB Rx-Tx measurements and UL-RSRP probe reference signal (SRS) on multiple TRPs of uplink signals transmitted from UE.
[007] The UL TDOA positioning procedure makes use of UL TDOA (and optionally UL SRS-RSRP) on multiple RPs of uplink signals transmitted from UE. The RPs measure the UL TDOA (and optionally UL SRS-RSRP) of the received signals using assistance data received from the positioning server, and the resulting measurements are used along with other configuration information to estimate the UE location. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 238 / 357 3 / 74
[008] The DL AoD positioning procedure makes use of the DL PRS RSRP measured from downlink signals received from multiple TPs in the UE. The UE measures the DL PRS RSRP of the received signals using assistance data received from the positioning server, and the resulting measurements are used along with other configuration information to locate the UE relative to neighboring TPs.
[009] The UL AoA positioning procedure makes use of the azimuth and zenith of arrival measured at multiple reception points (“RPs”) of uplink signals transmitted from the UE. The RPs measure A-AoA and Z-AoA of the received signals using assistance data received from the positioning server, and the resulting measurements are used along with other configuration information to estimate the UE location.
[010] NR-ECID positioning refers to techniques that use additional UE measurements and / or NR radio capabilities and other measurements to improve UE location estimation.
[011] Positioning modes can be categorized into three areas: 1) EU-assisted; 2) EU-based; and 3) Standalone. EU-assisted can refer to the EU performing measurements with or without network assistance and sending those measurements to the evolved server mobile location center (“E-SMLC”) where position calculation can occur. EU-based can refer to the EU performing measurements and calculating its own position with network assistance. Standalone can refer to the EU performing measurements and calculating its own position without network assistance. SUMMARY

Instead, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure is thorough and complete, and that it fully conveys the scope of the present inventive concepts to those skilled in the art. It should also be noted that these embodiments are not mutually exclusive. It can be tacitly assumed that components of one embodiment may be present / used in another embodiment.
[020] Currently, certain challenges exist. Support for sounding reference signal (“SRS”) bandwidth aggregation across two or three carriers and support for SRS configuration enhancement to indicate the SRS resources from which two or three carriers are linked is desired. Such enhancements require support by NRPPA, the protocol between the positioning server LMF and the NG-RAN, and F1AP, the protocol between the gNB-CU terminating the NRPPA and the gNB-DU hosting the TRP. Currently, it is unclear how signaling in NRPPA and F1AP will be impacted to support SRS bandwidth aggregation for positioning measurements when the gNB or TRP reports the measurement report to the LMF or gNB-CU, respectively. Therefore, the details of NRPPA and F1AP signaling are an open question that needs to be resolved.
[021] Certain aspects of dissemination and its modalities can provide solutions to these or other challenges. In some modalities, an SRS Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 245 / 357 10 / 74 Aggregation is defined in the SRS Resource Type IE present in the TRP Measurement Result IE of the NRPPA and F1AP specification, along with the list of SRS resources used for aggregation. In additional or alternative modes, an Aggregation ID is added to the SRS configuration flagged in F1AP and NRPPA to indicate the SRS resources that have aggregated bandwidth linking.
[022] Several embodiments in the present invention describe the addition of new parameters in NGAP signaling. In some embodiments, during SRS configuration: 1) The LMF requests the gNB-CU via NRPPA message to perform the UE SRS configuration using, if possible, SRS bandwidth aggregation; 2) The gNB-CU requests the gNB-DU via F1AP message to report the UE SRS configuration using, if possible, SRS bandwidth aggregation; 3) The gNB-DU indicates to the gNB-CU in the SRS configuration, the SRS resources, or SRS resource set that are aggregated, and the gNB-CU signals this information to the UE via RRC; and 4) The gNB-CU signals the aggregated SRS resources to the LMF and the gNB-CU indicates in the SRS configuration, the SRS resources or the SRS resource set that were aggregated via an ID.
[023] In additional or alternative modes, during the measurement report: 1) The LMF indicates via NRPPA message a bandwidth aggregation ID to be used for positioning measurement reports; 2) The gNB-CU indicates to the TRPs in the gNB-DU message over F1AP the bandwidth aggregation ID to be used for positioning measurement reports; and 3) The gNB-DU includes in the positioning measurement report whether the positioning measurements were made using the indicated aggregated SRS bandwidth (e.g., by indicating a flag in the TRP report that is associated with the measurement or by listing the SRS resources). Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 246 / 357 11 / 74 used for this measurement report which are part of the aggregate bandwidth).
[024] According to some embodiments, a method is provided for operating a communication device in a communication network that includes a network node. The method includes receiving a message from the network node. The message includes a request to perform an aggregation positioning measurement procedure and an indication of an aggregation identifier, ID, associated with a set of features to be used as part of the aggregation positioning measurement procedure. The method further includes determining the set of features based on the aggregation ID. The method further includes performing the aggregation positioning measurement procedure using the set of features.
[025] According to other embodiments, a method is provided for operating a first network node in a communications network that includes a communication device and a second network node. The method includes receiving a message from the second network node. The message includes a request for bandwidth aggregation information associated with the communication device and an aggregation identifier, ID, indicating a set of features to be used to determine the bandwidth aggregation information. The method further includes performing an aggregation positioning measurement procedure using the set of features.
[026] According to other embodiments, a method is provided for operating a second network node in a communications network that includes a communications device and a first network node. The method includes transmitting a message to the first network node. The message includes a request for bandwidth aggregation information associated with the device. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 247 / 357 12 / 74 communication and an aggregation identifier, ID, indicating a set of resources to be used to determine bandwidth aggregation information. The method additionally includes, in response to message transmission, receiving positioning information associated with the communication device.
[027] According to other embodiments, a communication device, network node, LMF, host, system, computer program, computer program product, or computer-readable non-transient medium is provided to perform one of the above methods.
[028] FIG. 3 illustrates an example of SRS bandwidth aggregation signaling in the network. The aggregation ID received in block 6 is the same one used by LMF to indicate the bandwidth aggregation to be used in blocks 7-8 for metering reports.
[029] In some embodiments, the LMF indicates a request for SRS bandwidth aggregation in the NRPPA message to the gNB. In some instances, this SRS bandwidth aggregation request is added as an optional IE / Group name as part of the NRPPA POSITION INFORMATION REQUEST message, as in 3GPP TS 38.455 v17.3.0. An example of a required change in section 9.1.1.10 of 3GPP TS 38.455 v17.3.0 is illustrated in FIG. 4. The position information request is a message sent by the LMF to the NG-RAN to request position information.
[030] FIG. 5 illustrates an example of explaining a condition, ifUETegInfoReqPeriodic.
[031] In additional or alternative modalities, the SRS bandwidth aggregation request is included as part of the IE / Group name “Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics” in 3GPP TS 38.455 Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 248 / 35713 / 74 v17.3.0. Note that the “Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics” are part of the NRPPA POSITION INFORMATION REQUEST message in 3GPP TS 38.455 v17.3.0. An example of a necessary change in section 9.2.27 of 3GPP TS 38.455 v17.3.0 is illustrated in FIG. 6. The example below shows the request IEs for “SRS Aggregation Request by SRS Resource Set” and “SRS Aggregation Request by SRS Resource,” which respectively request information about the aggregation to be configured for different SRS resource sets and the aggregation to be configured for different SRS resources. Two or more SRS resources or sets of SRS resources having the same aggregation, indicated by an ID in the response message, are considered configured for SRS bandwidth aggregation. In some example configurations, only one of the two request IEs may be present as part of the "Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics" IE.
[032] In some modes, the LMF requests (recommends) specific configuration for SRS BW (carrier) aggregation, such as: 1) Frequency Region (e.g., Component Carrier lists, ARFCN lists, BWPs, PRBs); 2) Bandwidth per CC for carrier aggregation; and 3) Number of positioning resource sets and resources per BWP. The LMF decides the above parameter based on the analysis of the positioning measurement accuracy that is required; and may be based on (knowledge gain, historical information) of the positioning accuracy of another UE located near the target UE. Information may also be deduced reciprocally based on any DL-PRS BW aggregation information. If the LMF has also configured or previously configured DL-PRS carrier aggregation, it may understand which Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 249 / 357 14 / 74 frequency regions were suitable and may recommend spatial UL carrier aggregation. This is suitable for carrier aggregation when the multi-RTT procedure is used where DL and UL carrier aggregation is required.
[033] The Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics IE includes the requested SRS configuration for the UE.
[034] FIG. 7 illustrates an example of an explanation of a condition, ifResourceTypePeriodic.
[035] FIG. 8 illustrates an example of an explanation for range limits, maxnoSRS-ResourceSets and maxnoSRS-ResourcePerSet.
[036] In some embodiments, the gNB-CU indicates an SRS bandwidth aggregation request in the F1AP message to the gNB-DU. In some instances, this SRS bandwidth aggregation request is added as an optional IE / Group name as part of the F1AP POSITION INFORMATION REQUEST message in 3GPP TS 38.473 v17.3.0. An example of a required change in section 9.1.1.10 of 3GPP TS 38.455 v17.3.0 is illustrated in FIG. 9. This message is sent by the gNB-CU to indicate to the gNB-DU the need to configure the UE to transmit SRS signals for uplink position measurement and also to retrieve the SRS configuration from the gNB-DU.
[037] In additional or alternative modes, the SRS bandwidth aggregation request is included as part of the IE / Group name “Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics” in 3GPP TS 38.473 v17.3.0. Note that the “Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics” are part of the F1AP POSITION INFORMATION REQUEST message in 3GPP TS 38.455 v17.3.0. An example of a necessary change in section 9.3.1.175 of 3GPP TS 38.473 v17.3.0 is illustrated. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 250 / 357 15 / 74 in FIG. 10. In this example, the request IDs for “SRS BW Aggregation Request by SRS Resource Set” and “SRS BW Aggregation Request by SRS Resource” respectively request information about the aggregation to be configured for different SRS resource sets and aggregation to be configured for different SRS resources. It is assumed that two or more SRS resources or SRS resource sets having the same aggregation, indicated by an aggregation ID in the response message, are configured for SRS bandwidth aggregation. In some example embodiments, only one of the two request IDs may be present as part of the “Requested SRS Transmission Characteristics” ID. This ID includes the requested SRS configuration for the UE for positioning purposes.
[038] In additional or alternative modes, after configuring SRS transmission to the UE, gNB-DU indicates to gNB-CU which list of SRS resources can be aggregated, by adding an aggregation ID to the SRS resources in the SRS configuration IE present in TS 38.473 v 17.3.0 section 9. 3.1.192.
[039] In additional or alternative modes, the aggregation ID may be associated with an SRS resource, an SRS Resource Set, a Positioning SRS resource, or a Positioning SRS Resource Set.
[040] In additional or alternative modes, the aggregation ID indicates by SRS resource level when two SRS resources are configured for SRS transmission for BW aggregation.
[041] In additional or alternative modes, the aggregation ID indicates by SRS resource set level when two or more SRS resources within the two SRS resource sets are configured for SRS transmission for BW aggregation. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 251 / 357 16 / 74
[042] FIG. 11 illustrates an example of such an aggregation indication. This SRS Configuration IE includes the SRS configuration configured by gNB-CU for UE.
[043] FIG. 12 illustrates an example of explanations for range limits associated with the SRS Configuration IE of FIG. 11.
[044] In additional or alternative modes, after configuring SRS transmission to the UE, gNB-CU transmits information to the LMF indicating which list of SRS resources can be aggregated, by adding an aggregation ID to the SRS resources in the SRS configuration IE present in TS 38.455 v 17.3.0 section 9.2.28.
[045] In additional or alternative modes, the NRPPA aggregation ID may be associated with an SRS resource, an SRS Resource Set, a Positioning SRS resource, or a Positioning SRS Resource Set. FIG. 13 illustrates an example of such an indication. This SRS Configuration IE includes the SRS configuration configured by NG-RAN for the UE.
[046] FIG. 14 illustrates an example of explanations for range limits associated with the SRS Configuration IE of FIG. 13.
[047] In additional or alternative modes, an aggregation ID is associated only with SRS resource sets (or Positioning SRS resource sets). Which SRS resources within two SRS resource sets can be aggregated are defined by one or more predefined criteria in the 3GPP specifications, including one or more of the following: 1) two SRS resources in the two SRS resource sets can be aggregated if they are configured in the same slot and the same symbol(s) within the slot; (each SRS Resource set and resources to be aggregated would be transmitted in separate BWPs simultaneously); 2) the two resources Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 252 / 357 1) 17 / 74 of the SRS in both sets of SRS resources have the same spatial relationship; 2) both SRS resources have the same number of symbols within the slot; and 3) both SRS resources have the same numerology and comb size.
[048] In additional or alternative modalities, the SRS configuration includes the srs-aggregation-configuration along with the (non-aggregated) SRS configurations per NRPPA.
[049] FIG. 15 illustrates an example of an aggregate SRS configuration IE. This information element includes the aggregate SRS configuration configured by the NG-RAN node for the UE.
[050] In additional or alternative modes, the srs-aggregationconfiguration is signaled along with the SRS (non-aggregated) configurations by F1AP and by RRC for UE.
[051] The modes associated with bandwidth-aggregated measurement reports are described below. In some modes, the LMF triggers an NRPPA message to the gNB to request that the UL measurement be performed on the aggregated bandwidth.
[052] In additional or alternative modes, the LMF includes the aggregation ID received during the SRS configuration described above in the NRPPA measurement request message. Alternatively, the LMF indicates the SRS aggregation configuration that was reported by gNB in the previous step and indicates to use it when reporting positioning measurements.
[053] FIG. 16 illustrates a sample TS 38.455 form shown below, with two options. Option 1 is the LMF indicating the aggregation ID to be used in the MEASUREMENT REQUEST message to generate UL positioning measurements. Option 2 is the LMF indicating the SRS aggregation configuration in the MEASUREMENT REQUEST message. This message is sent Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 253 / 357 18 / 74 by LMF to request that the NG-RAN node set up a positioning measurement.
[054] FIG. 17 illustrates an example of explanations of conditions associated with the Measurement Request message in FIG. 16.
[055] In additional or alternative modes, upon receiving the NRPPA message, the gNB-CU sends an F1AP message to the gNB-DU to request that the UL measurement be performed on the aggregated bandwidth.
[056] In some modes, gNB-CU includes the aggregation ID received during the SRS configuration described in the sections above in the F1AP measurement request message. Alternatively, gNB-CU indicates the SRS aggregation configuration that was reported by gNB-DU in the previous step and indicates to use it when reporting positioning measurements.
[057] FIGS. 18 to 20 illustrate a sample TS 38.473 form, with the two options. Option 1 is gNB-CU indicating the aggregation ID to be used in the POSITION MEASUREMENT REQUEST message to generate UL position measurements. Option 2 is gNB-CU indicating the SRS aggregation configuration in the POSITION MEASUREMENT REQUEST message. This message is sent by gNB-CU to request that gNB-DU configure a position measurement.
[058] FIG. 21 illustrates an example explanation of the range limits associated with the position measurement request message. FIG. 22 illustrates an example explanation of the conditions associated with the position measurement request message.
[059] In additional or alternative embodiments, when reporting UL positioning measurements, an indication of Aggregate SRS is included in the IE of positioning measurement result defined in TS 38.473 section 9.3.1.166 and in the IE of TRP Measurement Result defined in TS 38.455 section 9.2.37. In Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 254 / 357 19 / 74 For example, the aggregation indication is part of the SRS Resource Type IE defined in TS 38.455 and TS 38.473. A non-limiting example of TS 38.455 is illustrated in FIG. 23. The TRP Measurement Result IE includes the measurement result. FIG. 24 illustrates an example of an SRS Resource Type IE.
[060] In some embodiments, the possibility of supporting SRS aggregation for a given measurement report depends on two conditions. First, the UE must have signaled the capability for SRS carrier aggregation. Second, the UE must have sufficient coverage at the time the measurement is requested to reliably transmit SRS on multiple carriers. In the following embodiment, a solution is described to allow the network to handle the case where SRS aggregation is not feasible at the time of a request coming from the LMF.
[061] In additional or alternative modes, during the UE configuration phase, when the SRS bandwidth aggregation request IE is included in the NRPPA or F1AP POSITIONING INFORMATION REQUEST message and the receiving node is unable to configure the aggregated SRS, it may fail the request and send a failure message (NRPPA or F1AP POSITIONING INFORMATION FAILURE message) indicating that the configured aggregated SRS could not be supported at the time of the request.
[062] In additional or alternative modes, when the LMF requests positioning information via NRPPA message (followed by F1AP message to gNB-DU), it includes information on whether the LMF would be interested in a positioning or measurement configuration based on a single SRS (i.e., not SRS aggregation) if gNB / TRP is unable to allocate resources for SRS aggregation (e.g., when coverage of Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 255 / 357 20 / 74 The EU is not sufficient for multiple carriers being allocated, but sufficient for single-carrier measurement.
[063] In additional or alternative modes, the gNB / TRP response / report based on an LMF request for aggregated SRS measurement may report a single-carrier SRS measurement. Such a measurement may be reported when the LMF has indicated that single-carrier measurement would be an acceptable alternative to multi-carrier SRS aggregation, as an alternative to the positioning message failure being reported.
[064] The fallback report can also be reported by gNB to LMF as below, using the SRS Transmission Status. The UE can report the fallback to non-aggregated SRS to gNB using RRC, and gNB can report / retransmit the fallback to LMF using the NRPPa below (for example). The below can also be used to retransmit if the UE is currently transmitting SRS using a single carrier or an aggregated carrier, or if it has a fallback from aggregated carrier to single carrier for SRS transmission.
[065] This message is sent by the NG-RAN node to indicate that a change has occurred in the SRS configuration.
[066] FIG. 25 illustrates an example of a positioning information update message. This message can be sent by the NGRAN node to indicate that a change has occurred in the SRS configuration.
[067] In additional or alternative modes, the receiving node sends the configured SRS resources to the requesting node without any indication of aggregation. For example, in some embodiments, the telecommunications network 2902 includes one or more Open RAN (ORAN) network nodes. An ORAN network node is a node in the 2902 telecommunications network that supports an ORAN specification (for example, a specification published by the O-RAN Alliance or any similar organization) and may operate alone or in conjunction with other nodes to implement one or more functionalities of any node in the 2902 telecommunications network, including one or more 2910 network nodes and / or 2908 core network nodes.
[156] Examples of an ORAN network node include an open radio unit (O-RU), an open distributed unit (O-DU), an open central unit (O-CU), including an O-CU control plane (O-CU-CP) or an O-CU user plane (O-CU-UP), an intelligent RAN controller (near-time) Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 279 / 357 44 / 74 (real-time or not real-time) that hosts software or software plug-ins, such as a near real-time RAN control application (e.g., xApp) or a non-real-time RAN automation application (e.g., rApp) or any combination thereof (the adjective “open” designates support for an ORAN specification). The network node may support a specification, for example, by supporting an interface defined by the ORAN specification, such as an A1, F1, W1, E1, E2, X2, Xn interface, an open fronthaul user plane interface, or an open fronthaul management plane interface. The content-aware intents and notifications described in the present invention may be communicated from a 3GPP network node or an ORAN network node via 3GPP-defined interfaces (e.g., N2, N3) and / or ORAN Alliance-defined interfaces (e.g., A1, O1). Furthermore, an ORAN network node can be a logical node on a physical node.Furthermore, an ORAN network node can be deployed in a virtualization environment (described further below), in which one or more network functions are virtualized. For example, the virtualization environment might include an O-Cloud computing platform orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an O-2 interface defined by the O-RAN Alliance. 2910 network nodes facilitate the direct or indirect connection of user equipment (UE), such as connecting 2912a, 2912b, 2912c, and 2912d wireless devices (one or more of which may be generally referred to as 2912 UEs) to the 2906 core network via one or more wireless connections. The 2910 network nodes facilitate the direct or indirect connection of user equipment (UE), such as connecting UEs 2912a, 2912b, 2912c, and 2912d (one or more of which may be generally referred to as UEs 2912) to the 2906 core network via one or more wireless connections. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 280 / 357 45 / 74
[157] Examples of wireless communications via a wireless connection include transmitting and / or receiving wireless signals using electromagnetic waves, radio waves, infrared waves, and / or other types of signals suitable for carrying information without the use of wires, cables, or other conductive materials. Furthermore, in different embodiments, the 2900 communication system may include any number of wired or wireless networks, network nodes, UEs, and / or any other components or systems that may facilitate or participate in the communication of data and / or signals, whether via wired or wireless connections. The 2900 communication system may include and / or interface with any type of communication, telecommunications, data, cellular, radio network, and / or other similar type of system.
[158] UEs 2912 can be any of a wide variety of communication devices, including wireless devices arranged, configured and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with network nodes 2910 and other communication devices. Similarly, network nodes 2910 are arranged, capable, configured and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with UEs 2912 and / or with other network nodes or equipment in the telecommunications network 2902 to enable and / or provide network access, such as wireless network access, and / or to perform other functions, such as administration in the telecommunications network 2902.
[159] In the example depicted, core network 2906 connects network nodes 2910 to one or more hosts, such as host 2916. These connections can be direct or indirect via one or more intermediate networks or devices. In other examples, network nodes may be directly coupled to hosts. Core network 2906 includes one or more core network nodes (e.g., core network node 2908) that are structured with hardware and software components. Attributes of these components may be substantially similar to those Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 281 / 357 46 / 74 described with respect to UEs, network nodes and / or hosts, such that the descriptions thereof are generally applicable to the corresponding components of the core network node 2908. Examples of core network nodes include functions of one or more of a Mobile Switching Center (MSC), Mobility Management Entity (MME), Home Subscriber Server (HSS), Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF), Session Management Function (SMF), Authentication Server Function (AUSF), Signature Identifier Unmasking Function (SIDF), Unified Data Management (UDM), Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP), Network Exposure Function (NEF) and / or a User Plane Function (UPF).
[160] Host 2916 may be owned or controlled by a service provider other than an operator or provider of the access network 2904 and / or the telecommunications network 2902 and may be operated by or on behalf of the service provider. Host 2916 may host a variety of applications to provide one or more services. Examples of such applications include live and pre-recorded audio / video content, data collection services such as retrieval and compilation of data under various environmental conditions detected by a plurality of UEs, analytics functionality, social media, functions to control or otherwise interact with remote devices, functions for an alarm and surveillance center, or any other function performed by a server.
[161] As a whole, the 2900 communication system of FIG. 29 enables connectivity between UEs, network nodes and hosts. In this sense, the communication system can be configured to operate according to predefined rules or procedures, such as specific standards that include, but are not limited to: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM); System of Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 282 / 357 47 / 74 Universal Mobile Telecommunications (UMTS); Long Term Evolution (LTE) and / or other suitable 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G standards or any applicable future generation standard (e.g., 6G); wireless local area network (WLAN) standards, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 (Wi-Fi) standards; and / or any other appropriate wireless communication standard, such as Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Near Field Communication (NFC), ZigBee, LiFi and / or any low-power geographically distributed network (LPWAN) standards, such as LoRa and Sigfox.
[162] In some instances, the 2902 telecommunications network is a cellular network that implements standardized 3GPP attributes. Consequently, the 2902 telecommunications network can support network slicing to provide different logical networks for different devices that are connected to the 2902 telecommunications network. For example, the 2902 telecommunications network can provide Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) services to some UEs, while providing Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services to other UEs and / or Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) / Massive IoT services to additional UEs.
[163] In some examples, UEs 2912 are configured to transmit and / or receive information without direct human interaction. For example, a UE may be designed to transmit information to the access network 2904 at a predetermined rate when triggered by an internal or external event or in response to requests from the access network 2904. Additionally, a UE may be configured to operate in single or multi-RAT or multi-pattern mode. For example, a UE may operate with any one or a combination of Wi-Fi, NR (New Radio), and LTE, i.e., being configured for dual connectivity via multiple radio (MR-DC), such as New Radio E Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 283 / 357 48 / 74 UTRAN (Evolved UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) - Dual Connectivity (EN-DC).
[164] In the example, hub 2914 communicates with access network 2904 to facilitate indirect communication between one or more UEs (e.g., UE 2912c and / or 2912d) and network nodes (e.g., network node 2910b). In some examples, hub 2914 may be a controller, router, content and analytics source, or any of the other communication devices described in this invention relating to UEs. For example, hub 2914 may be a broadband router that enables access to core network 2906 for UEs. As another example, hub 2914 may be a controller that sends commands or instructions to one or more actuators in the UEs. Commands or instructions can be received from UEs, 2910 network nodes, or by executable code, script, process, or other instructions on the 2914 hub. As another example, the 2914 hub can be a data collector that acts as temporary storage for UE data and, in some embodiments, can perform analysis or other processing of the data.As another example, the 2914 hub can be a content source. For instance, for a UE that is a VR headset, display, speaker, or other media delivery device, the 2914 hub can retrieve VR assets, video, audio, or other media or sensory-related data via a network node, which the 2914 hub then provides to the UE directly, after performing local processing and / or after adding additional local content. In yet another example, the 2914 hub acts as a proxy server or orchestrator for UEs, particularly if one or more of the UEs are low-power IoT devices.
[165] Hub 2914 may have a constant / persistent or intermittent connection to network node 2910b. Hub 2914 may also allow a different communication and / or scaling scheme between hub 2914 and the Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 284 / 357 49 / 74 UEs (e.g., UE 2912c and / or 2912d) and between hub 2914 and core network 2906. In other examples, hub 2914 is connected to core network 2906 and / or one or more UEs via a wired connection. Furthermore, hub 2914 can be configured to connect to an M2M service provider via access network 2904 and / or to another UE via a direct connection. In some scenarios, UEs can establish a wireless connection with network nodes 2910 while still connected via hub 2914 through a wired or wireless connection. In some embodiments, hub 2914 can be a dedicated hub – that is, a hub whose primary function is to route communications to / from UEs to / from network node 2910b. In other configurations, the 2914 hub may be a non-dedicated hub – that is, a device that is capable of operating to route communications between the UEs and the 2910b network node, but which is additionally capable of operating as a communication start and / or endpoint for certain data channels.
[166] FIG. 30 shows a UE 3000 according to some embodiments. As used in the present invention, a UE refers to a device capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with network nodes and / or other UEs. Examples of a UE include, but are not limited to, a smartphone, mobile phone, cellular phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phone, wireless local loop phone, desktop computer, personal digital assistant (PDA), wireless cameras, gaming console or device, music storage device, playback appliance, wearable terminal device, wireless endpoint, mobile station, tablet, laptop, laptop embedded equipment (LEE), laptop mounted equipment (LME), smart device, wireless customer premises equipment (CPE), vehicle mounted or embedded / integrated wireless device, etc.Other examples include any UE identified by the 3GPP Partnership Project, including a narrowband Internet of Things UE. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 285 / 357 50 / 74 (NB-IoT), a machine-type communication (MTC) UE and / or an enhanced MTC UE (eMTC).
[167] A UE can support device-to-device (D2D) communication, for example, when implementing a 3GPP standard for side-link communication, Dedicated Shortband Communication (DSRC), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), or vehicle-to-everything (V2X). In other examples, a UE may not necessarily have a user in the sense of a human user who owns and / or operates the relevant device. Instead, a UE may represent a device that is intended for sale or operation by a human user, but which may not be, or may not initially be, associated with a specific human user (e.g., a smart sprinkler controller). Alternatively, a UE may represent a device that is not intended for sale or operation by an end user, but which may be associated with or operated for the benefit of a user (e.g., a smart power meter).
[168] The UE 3000 includes a set of processing circuits 3002 that is operationally coupled via a bus 3004 to an input / output interface 3006, a power supply 3008, a memory 3010, a communication interface 3012 and / or any other component or any combination thereof. Certain UEs may use all or a subset of the components shown in FIG. 30. The level of integration between the components may vary from one UE to another UE. Additionally, certain UEs may contain multiple instances of a component, such as multiple processors, memories, transceivers, transmitters, receivers, etc.
[169] The 3002 processing circuitry is configured to process instructions and data and can be configured to implement any operational sequential state machine to execute instructions. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 286 / 357 51 / 74 stored as machine-readable computer programs in memory 3010. The 3002 processing circuitry may be implemented as one or more hardware-implemented state machines (e.g., discrete logic, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), etc.); programmable logic along with appropriate firmware; one or more stored computer programs, general-purpose processors such as a microprocessor or digital signal processor (DSP), along with appropriate software; or any combination of the above. For example, the 3002 processing circuitry may include multiple central processing units (CPUs).
[170] In the example, the 3006 input / output interface can be configured to provide an interface or interfaces for an input device, an output device, or one or more input and / or output devices. Examples of an output device include a speaker, a sound card, a video card, a display, a monitor, a printer, an actuator, a transmitter, a smart card, another output device, or any combination thereof. An input device can allow a user to capture information on the UE 3000. Examples of an input device include a touch-sensitive or presence-sensitive display, a camera (e.g., a digital camera, a digital video camera, a webcam, etc.), a microphone, a sensor, a mouse, a command ball, a directional pad, a trackpad, a scroll wheel, a smart card, and the like. The presence-sensitive display may include a capacitive or resistive touch sensor to detect user input. A sensor could be, for example, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a tilt sensor, a force sensor, a magnetometer, an optical sensor, a proximity sensor, or a... Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 287 / 357 52 / 74 biometric sensor etc. or any combination thereof. An output device may use the same type of interface port as an input device. For example, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port may be used to provide both an input and an output device.
[171] In some embodiments, the 3008 power source is structured as a battery or battery bank. Other types of power sources, such as an external power source (e.g., an electrical outlet), photovoltaic devices, or power cells, may be used. The 3008 power source may additionally include a power circuit assemblies to distribute power from the 3008 power source itself and / or an external power source to the various parts of the UE 3000 via an input circuit assemblies or an interface, such as an electrical power cable. Power distribution may, for example, be for charging the 3008 power source. The power circuit assemblies may perform any shaping, conversion, or other modification to the power from the 3008 power source to make the power suitable for the respective UE 3000 components to which power is supplied.
[172] The 3010 memory may be or be configured to include memory such as random access memory (RAM), read-only memory (ROM), read-only programmable memory (PROM), read-only erasable programmable memory (EPROM), read-only electrically erasable programmable memory (EEPROM), magnetic disks, optical disks, hard disks, removable cartridges, flash drives, and so forth. In one example, the 3010 memory includes one or more application programs 3014, such as an operating system, web browser application, a widget, a gadget engine, or other application and corresponding data 3016. The 3010 memory may store, for use by the UE 3000, any of a Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 288 / 357 53 / 74 variety of various operating systems or combinations of operating systems.
[173] The 3010 memory can be configured to include a number of physical drive units, such as redundant independent disk array (RAID), flash memory, USB flash drive, external hard disk drive, thumb drive, pen drive, key drive, high-density digital versatile disc (HD-DVD) optical disc drive, internal hard disk drive, Blu-ray optical disc drive, holographic digital data storage (HDDS) optical disc drive, external dual in-line mini memory module (DIMM), synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM), external micro-DIMM SDRAM, smart card memory, such as a tamper-evident module in the form of a universal integrated circuit card (UICC), including one or more subscriber identity modules (SIMs), such as a USIM and / or ISIM, other memory or any combination thereof. The UICC can, for example, be an embedded UICC (eUICC), an integrated UICC (iUICC), or a removable UICC commonly known as a SIM card. Memory 3010 can allow the UE 3000 to access instructions, application programs, and the like, stored in transient or non-transient memory media, to download or upload data. A manufactured article, such as one that utilizes a communication system, can be tangibly modalized as or in memory 3010, which can be or comprise a device-readable storage medium.
[174] The processing circuitry 3002 can be configured to communicate with an access network or another network using the communication interface 3012. The communication interface 3012 may comprise one or more communication subsystems and may include or be communicatively coupled to an antenna 3022. The interface of Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 289 / 357 54 / 74 communication 3012 may include one or more transceivers used to communicate, such as by communicating with one or more remote transceivers of another device capable of wireless communication (e.g., another UE or a network node in an access network). Each transceiver may include a transmitter 3018 and / or a receiver 3020 suitable for providing network communications (e.g., optical, electrical, frequency allocations, and so on). Furthermore, the transmitter 3018 and the receiver 3020 may be coupled to one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 3022) and may share circuit components, software, or firmware, or alternatively, be implemented separately.
[175] In the embodiment illustrated, communication functions of the 3012 communication interface may include cellular communication, Wi-Fi communication, LPWAN communication, data communication, voice communication, multimedia communication, short-band communications such as Bluetooth, field proximity communication, location-based communication such as the use of the global positioning system (GPS) to determine a location, other related communication function or any combination thereof. Communications may be implemented in accordance with one or more communication protocols and / or standards, such as IEEE 802.11. Code Division Multiplexing (CDMA), Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA), GSM, LTE, New Radio (NR), UMTS, WiMax, Ethernet, Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP), Synchronous Optical Network (SONET), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), QUIC, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and so on.
[176] Regardless of the sensor type, an UE can provide an output of data captured by its sensors, through its interface. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 290 / 357 55 / 74 communication 3012, via a wireless connection to a network node. Data captured by sensors in one UE can be communicated wirelessly to a network node via another UE. The output can be periodic (e.g., once every 15 minutes if reporting the sensed temperature), random (e.g., to balance the reporting load of multiple sensors), in response to a trigger event (e.g., when humidity is detected, an alert is sent), in response to a request (e.g., a user-initiated request), or a continuous stream (e.g., a live video feed of a patient).
[177] As another example, a UE comprises an actuator, a motor, or a switch connected to a communication interface configured to receive wireless input from a network node via a wireless connection. In response to the received wireless input, the states of the actuator, motor, or switch may change. For example, the UE may comprise a motor that adjusts the control surfaces or rotors of a drone in flight according to the received input or a robotic arm that performs a medical procedure according to the received input.
[178] A UE, when in the form of an Internet of Things (IoT) device, may be a device for use in one or more application domains, these domains comprising, but not limited to, urban wearable technology, extended industrial application and healthcare. Non-limiting examples of such an IoT device are devices that are or are embedded in: a connected refrigerator or freezer, a TV, a connected lighting device, an electricity meter, a robot vacuum cleaner, a voice-controlled smart speaker, a home security camera, a motion detector, a thermostat, a smoke detector, a door / window sensor, a flood / humidity sensor, an electric lock, a Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 291 / 357 56 / 74 connected doorbell, an air conditioning system such as a heat pump, an autonomous vehicle, a surveillance system, a weather monitoring device, a vehicle parking monitoring device, an electric vehicle charging station, a smartwatch, a fitness tracker, a head-mounted display for Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR), a wearable for tactile augmentation or sensory enhancement, a water sprinkler, an animal or item tracking device, a sensor for monitoring a plant or animal, an industrial robot, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), and any type of medical device, such as a heart rate monitor or a remotely controlled surgical robot. An UE in the form of an IoT device comprises a set of circuits and / or software depending on the intended application of the IoT device, in addition to other components, as described in relation to the UE 3000 shown in FIG. 30.
[179] As yet another specific example, in an IoT scenario, a UE can represent a machine or other device that performs monitoring and / or measurements and transmits the results of such monitoring and / or measurements to another UE and / or a network node. The UE can, in this case, be an M2M device, which in a 3GPP context can be referred to as an MTC device. As a particular example, the UE can implement the 3GPP NB-IoT standard. In other scenarios, a UE can represent a vehicle, such as a car, a bus, a truck, a ship, and an airplane, or other equipment that is capable of monitoring and / or reporting its operational status or other functions associated with its operation.
[180] In practice, any number of UEs can be used together in relation to a single use case. For example, a first UE could be or be integrated into a drone and provide the drone's speed information (obtained Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 292 / 357 57 / 74 via a speed sensor) to a second UE which is a remote controller that operates the drone. When the user makes changes from the remote controller, the first UE can adjust the throttle on the drone (e.g., by controlling an actuator) to increase or decrease the drone's speed. The first and / or second UE may also include more than one of the functionalities described above. For example, a UE may understand the sensor and the actuator and handle data communication for both the speed sensor and the actuators.
[181] FIG. 31 shows a network node 3100 according to some embodiments. As used in the present invention, network node refers to equipment capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with a UE and / or with other network nodes or equipment, in a telecommunication network. Examples of network nodes include, but are not limited to, access points (APs) (e.g., radio access points), base stations (BSs) (e.g., radio base stations, B nodes, evolved B nodes (eNBs), NR B nodes (gNBs)), O-RAN nodes or components of an O-RAN node (e.g., intelligent controller, O-RU, O-DU, O-CU).
[182] Base stations can be categorized based on the amount of coverage they provide (or, in other words, their transmission power level) and, therefore, depending on the amount of coverage provided, can be referred to as femto base stations, pico base stations, micro base stations, or macro base stations. A base station can be a relay node or a relay donor node that controls a relay. A network node can also include one or more (or all) parts of a distributed base radio station, such as centralized digital units and / or remote radio units (RRUs), sometimes referred to as Remote Radio Heads (RRHs). Such remote radio units can or Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 293 / 357 58 / 74 cannot be integrated into an antenna like an antenna-integrated radio. Parts of a distributed base radio station may also be referred to as nodes in a distributed antenna system (DAS).
[183] Other examples of network nodes include 5G multi-transmission point (multi-TRP) access nodes, multi-standard radio equipment (MSR), such as MSR BSs, network controllers, such as radio network controllers (RNCs) or base station controllers (BSCs), base transceiver stations (BTSs), transmission points, transmission nodes, multicellular / multicast coordination entities (MCEs), Operation and Maintenance (O&M) nodes, Operations Support System (OSS) nodes, Self-Organizing Network (SON) nodes, positioning nodes (e.g., Evolved Server Mobile Location Centres (E-SMLCs)) and / or Minimization Drive Tests (MDTs).
[184] Network node 3100 includes a set of processing circuits 3102, a memory 3104, a communication interface 3106, and a power supply 3108. Network node 3100 may be composed of multiple physically separate components (e.g., a B-Node component and an RNC component or a BTS component and a BSC component, etc.), each of which may have its own respective components. In certain scenarios where network node 3100 comprises multiple separate components (e.g., BTS and BSC components), one or more separate components may be shared among several network nodes. For example, a single RNC may control multiple B-Nodes. In this scenario, each unique pair of B-Node and RNC may, in some cases, be considered a single separate network node. In some embodiments, network node 3100 may be configured to support multiple radio access technologies (RATs).In such configurations, some components may be duplicated (for example). Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 294 / 357 59 / 74 example, separate memory 3104 for different RATs) and some components can be reused (for example, the same antenna 3110 can be shared by different RATs). The network node 3100 can also include multiple sets of the various components illustrated for different wireless technologies integrated into the network node 3100, for example, GSM, WCDMA, LTE, NR, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-wave, LoRaWAN, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) or Bluetooth wireless technologies. These wireless technologies can be integrated into the same chip or into a different chip or set of chips and other components within the network node 3100.
[185] The processing circuitry set 3102 may comprise a combination of one or more of a microprocessor, controller, microcontroller, central processing unit, digital signal processor, application-specific integrated circuit, field-programmable gate array or any other suitable computing device, feature or combination of hardware, software and / or operable coded logic to provide, alone or in conjunction with other network node components 3100, such as memory 3104, to provide network node functionality 3100.
[186] In some embodiments, the processing circuitry 3102 includes a system-on-a-chip (SOC). In some embodiments, the processing circuitry 3102 includes one or more of the radio frequency (RF) transceiver circuitry 3112 and the baseband processing circuitry 3114. In some embodiments, the radio frequency (RF) transceiver circuitry 3112 and the baseband processing circuitry 3114 may be on chips (or chip assemblies), boards, or separate units, such as radio units and digital units. In alternative embodiments, part or all of the RF transceiver circuitry 3112 and baseband processing circuitry 3114 may be on chips (or chip assemblies), boards, or separate units, such as radio units and digital units. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 295 / 357 60 / 74 baseband processing circuits 3114 may be on the same chip or chip set, boards or units.
[187] Memory 3104 may comprise any form of computer-readable volatile or non-volatile memory, including, without limitation, persistent storage, solid-state memory, remotely mounted memory, magnetic media, optical media, random access memory (RAM), read-only memory (ROM), mass storage media (e.g., a hard disk), removable storage media (e.g., a flash drive, a Compact Disc (CD), or a Digital Video Disc (DVD)), and / or any other device-readable and / or computer-executable non-transient volatile or non-volatile memory devices that store information, data, and / or instructions that can be used by the processing circuitry 3102.Memory 3104 can store any suitable instructions, data, or information, including a computer program, software, an application including one or more logic, rules, code, tables, and / or other instructions capable of being executed by the processing circuitry 3102 and used by the network node 3100. Memory 3104 can be used to store any calculations performed by the processing circuitry 3102 and / or any data received via the communication interface 3106. [191] The antenna 3110, the communication interface 3106 and / or the processing circuitry 3102 can be configured to perform any reception operations and / or certain acquisition operations described in the present invention as being performed by the network node. Any information, data and / or signals can be received from a UE, another network node and / or any other network equipment. Similarly, the antenna 3110, the communication interface 3106 and / or the processing circuitry 3102 can be configured to perform any transmission operations described in the present invention as being performed by the network node. Any information, data and / or signals can be transmitted to a UE, another network node and / or any other network equipment.
[192] The power source 3108 provides power to the various components of the network node 3100 in a manner suitable for the respective components (e.g., at a voltage and current level required for each respective component). The power source 3108 may additionally comprise or be coupled to the power management circuitry to provide power to the components of the network node 3100 for Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 298 / 357 63 / 74 perform the functionality described in the present invention. For example, the network node 3100 may be connectable to an external power source (e.g., the electrical grid, a power outlet) via an input circuit or interface, such as an electrical cable, whereby the external power source supplies power to the power circuit assembly of power source 3108. As a further example, power source 3108 may comprise a power source in the form of a battery or battery bank that is connected to or integrated into the power circuit assembly. The battery may provide backup power in case the external power source fails.
[193] The embodiments of the 3100 network node may include additional components beyond those shown in FIG. 31, to provide certain aspects of network node functionality, including any of the functionalities described in the present invention and / or any functionality necessary to support the matter described in the present invention. For example, the 3100 network node may include user interface equipment to allow input of information into the 3100 network node and to allow output of information from the 3100 network node. This may allow a user to perform diagnostics, maintenance, repair, and other administrative functions for the 3100 network node.
[194] FIG. 32 is a block diagram of a 3200 host, which may be an embodiment of the 2916 host of FIG. 29, according to various aspects described in the present invention. As used in the present invention, the 3200 host may be or comprise various combinations of hardware and / or software, including a standalone server, a blade server, a cloud-deployed server, a distributed server, a virtual machine, container, or processing resources in a server farm. The 3200 host may provide one or more services to one or more UEs. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 299 / 357 64 / 74
[195] The host 3200 includes a set of processing circuits 3202 that are operationally coupled via a bus 3204 to an input / output interface 3206, a network interface 3208, a power supply 3210, and a memory 3212. Other components may be included in other embodiments. The attributes of these components may be substantially similar to those described with respect to the devices of previous figures, such as FIGS. 30 and 31, so that the descriptions thereof are generally applicable to the corresponding components of the host 3200.
[196] Memory 3212 may include one or more computer programs, including one or more host application programs 3214 and data 3216, which may include user data, for example, data generated by a UE for host 3200 or data generated by host 3200 for a UE. Host application programs 3214 can support various protocols, such as HTTP Live Streaming Protocol (HLS), Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP), Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH), etc.
[197] FIG. 33 is a block diagram illustrating a 3300 virtualization environment in which functions implemented by some embodiments can be virtualized. In the present context, virtualizing means creating virtual versions of appliances or devices, which may include virtualization hardware platforms, storage devices, and network resources. As used in the present invention, virtualization can be applied to any device described in the present invention, or components thereof, and refers to an implementation in which at least a portion of the functionality is implemented as one or more virtual components. Some or all of the functions described in the present invention can be implemented as virtual components executed by one or more virtual machines (VMs) deployed in one or more 3300 virtual environments hosted by one or more hardware nodes, such as a hardware computing device operating as a network node, UE, core network node, or host. Additionally, in embodiments where the virtual node does not require radio connectivity (e.g., a core network node or host), then the node can be fully virtualized. In some embodiments, the 3300 virtualization environment includes components defined by the O-RAN Alliance, such as an O-Cloud environment orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an O-2 interface.
[198] 3302 applications (which may alternatively be called software instances, virtual appliances, network functions, virtual nodes, virtual network functions, etc.) run in the Q400 virtualization environment for Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 301 / 357 66 / 74 implement some of the attributes, functions and / or benefits of some of the modalities disclosed in the present invention.
[199] The 3304 hardware includes a set of processing circuits, memory that stores software and / or instructions executable by the hardware processing circuits, and / or other hardware devices as described in the present invention, such as a network interface, input / output interface, and so forth. Software may be executed by the processing circuits to instantiate one or more 3306 virtualization layers (also referred to as hypervisors or virtual machine monitors (VMMs)), provide 3308a and 3308b VMs (one or more of which may be generally referred to as 3308 VMs), and / or perform any of the functions, attributes, and / or benefits described in relation to some embodiments described in the present invention. The 3306 virtualization layer may present a virtual operating platform that appears as network hardware for the 3308 VMs.
[200] 3308 VMs comprise virtual processing, virtual memory, virtual network or interface, and virtual storage and may be run by a corresponding 3306 virtualization layer. Different instance modes of a 3302 virtual appliance may be implemented on one or more of the 3308 VMs, and the implementations may be done in different ways. Hardware virtualization is, in some contexts, referred to as network function virtualization (NFV). NFV can be used to consolidate many types of network equipment into high-volume, industry-standard server hardware, physical switches, and physical storage, which may be located in data centers, and equipment within the customer's premises. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 302 / 357 67 / 74
[201] In the context of NFV, a 3308 VM can be a software implementation of a physical machine that executes programs as if they were running on a non-virtualized physical machine. Each of the 3308 VMs and that part of the 3304 hardware that runs that VM, whether hardware dedicated to that VM and / or hardware shared by that VM with other VMs, form separate virtual network elements. Also in the context of NFV, a virtual network function is responsible for handling specific network functions that are executed on one or more 3308 VMs on top of the 3304 hardware and corresponds to the 3302 application.
[202] 3304 hardware can be implemented in a standalone network node with generic or specific components. 3304 hardware can implement some functions via virtualization. Alternatively, 3304 hardware can be part of a larger hardware cluster (for example, such as in a data center or CPE), where many hardware nodes work together and are managed via 3310 management and orchestration, which, among other things, oversees the application lifecycle management 3302. In some embodiments, 3304 hardware is coupled to one or more radio units, each including one or more transmitters and one or more receivers that can be coupled to one or more antennas. Radio units can communicate directly with other hardware nodes via one or more appropriate network interfaces and can be used in combination with virtual components to provide a virtual node with radio capabilities, such as a radio access node or a base station. In some embodiments, some signaling may be provided by the use of a 3312 control system, which may alternatively be used for communication between hardware nodes and radio units. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 303 / 357 68 / 74
[203] FIG. 34 shows a communication diagram of a host 3402 communicating via a network node 3404 with a UE 3406 by a partially wireless connection according to some embodiments. Example implementations, according to various embodiments, of the UE (such as a UE 2912a of FIG. 29 and / or UE 3000 of FIG. 30), network node (such as network node 2910a of FIG. 29 and / or network node 3100 of FIG. 31), and host (such as host 2916 of FIG. 29 and / or host 3200 of FIG. 32) discussed in the preceding paragraphs will now be described with reference to FIG. 34.
[204] Like the 3200 host, 3402 host modalities include hardware, such as a communication interface, processing circuitry, and memory. The 3402 host also includes software, which is stored or accessible by the 3402 host and executable by the processing circuitry. The software includes a host application that can be operated to provide a service to a remote user, such as the UE 3406 connecting via an over-the-top (OTT) 3450 connection that extends between the UE 3406 and the 3402 host. In providing the service to the remote user, a host application can provide user data that is transmitted using the OTT 3450 connection.
[205] Network node 3404 includes hardware that enables it to communicate with host 3402 and UE 3406. Connection 3460 can be direct or traverse a core network (such as core network 2906 in FIG. 29) and / or one or more other intermediate networks, such as one or more public, private, or hosted networks. For example, an intermediate network could be a backbone network or the Internet.
[206] The UE 3406 includes hardware and software, which is stored or accessible by the UE 3406 and executable by the UE's processing circuitry. The software includes a client application, such as a web browser or operator-specific “application” that may be operable for Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 304 / 357 69 / 74 To provide a service to a human or non-human user via UE 3406 with support from host 3402. On host 3402, a running host application can communicate with a running client application via the OTT 3450 connection terminating on UE 3406 and host 3402. When providing the service to the user, the UE client application can receive request data from the host application and provide user data in response to the request data. The OTT 3450 connection can transfer the request data and the user data. The UE client application can interact with the user to generate the user data that it provides to the host application through the OTT 3450 connection.
[207] The OTT 3450 connection can be extended via a 3460 connection between host 3402 and network node 3404 and via a 3470 wireless connection between network node 3404 and UE 3406 to provide the connection between host 3402 and UE 3406. The 3460 connection and the 3470 wireless connection, by which the OTT 3450 connection can be provided, were abstractly designed to illustrate communication between host 3402 and UE 3406 via network node 3404, without explicit reference to any intermediate devices and the precise routing of messages via those devices.
[208] As an example of transmitting data via the OTT 3450 connection, in step 3408, host 3402 provides user data, which can be performed when running a host application. In some embodiments, the user data is associated with a particular human user interacting with UE 3406. In other embodiments, the user data is associated with a UE 3406 that shares data with host 3402 without explicit human interaction. In step 3410, host 3402 initiates a transmission carrying the user data toward UE 3406. Host 3402 can initiate the transmission in response to a request transmitted by UE 3406. The request can be caused by human interaction with UE 3406 or by application operation. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 305 / 357 70 / 74 client running on UE 3406. The transmission can pass through network node 3404, according to the teachings of the modes described throughout this disclosure. Therefore, in step 3412, network node 3404 transmits to UE 3406 the user data that was carried over in the transmission that host 3402 initiated, according to the teachings of the modes described throughout this disclosure. In step 3414, UE 3406 receives the user data carried over in the transmission, which can be performed by a client application running on UE 3406 associated with the host application running on host 3402.
[209] In some instances, UE 3406 runs a client application that provides user data to host 3402. The user data may be provided in reaction to or response to data received from host 3402. Therefore, in step 3416, UE 3406 may provide user data, which may be performed when running the client application. When providing user data, the client application may additionally consider user input received from the user via an input / output interface of UE 3406. Regardless of the specific way in which the user data was provided, UE 3406 initiates, in step 3418, the transmission of user data toward host 3402 via network node 3404. In step 3420, in accordance with the teachings of the embodiments described throughout this disclosure, network node 3404 receives user data from UE 3406 and initiates transmission of the received user data toward host 3402.In step 3422, host 3402 receives the user data ported in the transmission initiated by UE 3406.
[210] One or more of the various modes improve the performance of OTT services provided to UE 3406 using the OTT connection 3450, in which the wireless connection 3470 forms the last segment. More precisely, the teachings of these modes may allow the indication of a list of aggregated SRS for LMF in order to judge the bandwidth. Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 306 / 357 71 / 74 total. The LMF can request that measurements be taken at a specific bandwidth without specifying the exact SRS resources from the TRP, which will save on signaling and reduce complexity. The TRP / gNB responds to the LMF with the measurement and the list of SRS used for the measurement report.
[211] In one example scenario, factory status information can be collected and analyzed by the 3402 host. As another example, the 3402 host can process audio and video data that may have been retrieved from a UE for use in map creation. As another example, the 3402 host can collect and analyze real-time data to assist in vehicle congestion control (e.g., traffic light control). As another example, the 3402 host can store surveillance video that has been uploaded by a UE. As another example, the 3402 host can store or control access to media content, such as video, audio, VR, or AR, which can be broadcast, multicast, or unicast to the UEs. As other examples, the 3402 host can be used for energy billing, remote control of non-critical electrical load in time to balance power generation needs, location services, presentation services (such as compiling diagrams, etc.).(of data collected from remote devices) or any other function of collecting, retrieving, storing, analyzing and / or transmitting data.
[212] In some examples, a measurement procedure may be provided for the purpose of monitoring data rate, latency, and other factors in which one or more modes improve. There may additionally be an optional network functionality to reconfigure the OTT 3450 connection between host 3402 and UE 3406 in response to variations in measurement results. The measurement procedure and / or the network functionality to reconfigure the OTT connection may be implemented in software and hardware of host 3402 and / or UE 3406. In some modes, sensors (not shown) Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 307 / 357 72 / 74 can be deployed on or in conjunction with other devices through which the OTT 3450 connection passes; the sensors can participate in the measurement procedure by providing values of the monitored quantities exemplified above, or by providing values of other physical quantities from which the software can compute or estimate the monitored quantities. Reconfiguration of the OTT 3450 connection may include message format, retransmission settings, preferred routing, etc.; reconfiguration does not need to directly alter the operation of the network node 3404. Such procedures and functionalities may be known and practiced in the state of the art. In certain embodiments, measurements may involve proprietary UE signaling that facilitates measurements of throughput, propagation times, latency, and the like, by the host 3402.Measurements can be implemented in such a way that the software causes messages to be transmitted, in particular dummy or empty messages, using the OTT 3450 connection while monitoring propagation times, errors, etc.
[213] Although the computing devices described in the present invention (e.g., UEs, network nodes, hosts) may include the illustrated combination of hardware components, other embodiments may comprise computing devices with different combinations of components. It should be understood that these computing devices may comprise any suitable combination of hardware and / or software necessary to perform tasks, attributes, functions, and methods disclosed in the present invention. Determining, calculating, obtaining, or similar operations described in the present invention may be performed by a set of processing circuits, which may process information, for example, by converting the obtained information into other information, comparing the obtained information or converted information with the information Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 308 / 357 73 / 74 stored in the network node, and / or perform one or more operations based on the information obtained or converted information and, as a result of said processing, make a determination. Furthermore, although the components are depicted as single boxes located within a larger box or nested within multiple boxes, in practice, computing devices may comprise multiple different physical components that make up a single illustrated component, and functionality may be partitioned between separate components. For example, a communication interface may be configured to include any of the components described in the present invention, and / or the functionality of the components may be partitioned between the processing circuitry and the communication interface. In another example, the non-computationally intensive functions of any of these components can be implemented in software or firmware, and the computationally intensive functions can be implemented in hardware.
[214] In certain embodiments, some or all of the functionality described in the present invention may be provided by a set of processing circuits that execute instructions stored in memory, which in certain embodiments may be a product of a computer program in the form of a non-transient, computer-readable storage medium. In alternative embodiments, all or part of the functionality may be provided by the set of processing circuits without executing the instructions stored in a separate or discrete device-readable storage medium, such as in a hard-wired manner. In any of these particular embodiments, whether executing instructions stored in a non-transient, computer-readable storage medium or not, the set of processing circuits may be configured to perform the Petition 870250090224, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 309 / 357 74 / 74 functionality described. The benefits provided by such functionality are not limited to the processing circuitry alone or to other components of the computing device, but are enjoyed by the computing device as a whole and / or by end users and a wireless network in general.
