Hereafter, unless explicitly stated, a resource in either the frequency domain or the time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource to describe some exemplary embodiments of this disclosure. It is noted that exemplary embodiments of this disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.
[0034] FIG. 1 shows an exemplary communication network 100 in which embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1, the communication network 100 can include a terminal device 110. Hereafter in this document, the terminal device 110 can also be referred to as a UE or a terminal device.
[0035] The communication network 100 may additionally include a network device 120. Hereafter in this document, the network device 120 may also be referred to as a gNB or a network device. The terminal device 110 may communicate with the network device 120.
[0036] It should be understood that the number of network devices and terminal devices shown in FIG. 1 is given for illustrative purposes only and does not suggest any limitations. The 100 communication network may include any suitable number of network devices and terminal devices.
[0037] In some exemplary embodiments, links from network device 120 to terminal device 110 may be referred to as a downlink (DL), while links from terminal device 110 to network device 120 may be referred to as an uplink (UL). In DL, network device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or transmitter) and terminal device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or receiver). [0038] Communications in the communication environment 100 can be Petition 870250090232, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 95 / 121 9 / 24 implemented in accordance with any suitable communication protocol(s), including, but not limited to, first-generation (1G), second-generation (2G), third-generation (3G), fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), sixth-generation (6G) and similar cellular communication protocols, wireless local area network communication protocols such as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and similar protocols, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future.Furthermore, communication may utilize any suitable wireless communication technology, including but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD), Time Division Duplexing (TDD), Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), Discrete Fourier Transform Spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM), and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.
[0039] Network energy efficiency is of great importance for environmental sustainability, to reduce environmental impact (greenhouse gas emissions) and for operational cost savings. As 5G becomes widespread across industries and geographic areas, handling more advanced services and applications that require very high data rates (e.g., XR), networks are becoming denser, using more antennas, wider bandwidths, and more frequency bands. The environmental impact of 5G needs to remain under control, and innovative solutions to improve network energy efficiency need to be developed.
[0040] As analyzed, RAN networks consume the highest power and this is of great importance to operators. Network energy savings is one of the aspects addressed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in release 18. For RAN sites with massive antenna arrays, there is a good possibility of switching off the transceiver strings during low-load scenarios. Transceiver strings with the power amplifier consume a significant amount of power, and switching off the circuit array provides energy savings.
[0041] During the Release 18 study item for network energy savings, it was agreed to specify any necessary enhancements to procedures related to CSI and beam management, including measurement and reporting, and signaling to enable efficient adaptation of spatial elements. Petition 870250090232, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 96 / 121 10 / 24 (e.g., antenna ports, active transceiver chains). Furthermore, release 18 specified necessary enhancements to CSI-related procedures, including measurement and reporting, and signaling the need to enable efficient adaptation of power offset values between Downlink Shared Physical Channel (PDSCH) and CSI-RS.
[0042] In some modalities, for spatial element adaptation, the study in which each resource configuration / resource set / CSI-RS resource can be associated with only one spatial adaptation pattern and each resource configuration / resource set / CSI-RS resource can be associated with one or more spatial adaptation patterns can be further discussed.
[0043] In some embodiments, for spatial element adaptation, the study in which independent / separate CSI reporting configurations, where each CSI reporting configuration corresponds to a spatial adaptation pattern and a CSI reporting configuration contains multiple CSI reporting sub-configurations, where each sub-configuration corresponds to a spatial adaptation pattern, may be further discussed.
[0044] Most massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) configurations are used for Time Division Duplexing (TDD) bands, where channel reciprocity can be leveraged to derive beam patterns at the 120 network device. In such deployments, the 110 terminal device is configured with Sound Reference Signal (SRS) capabilities. The 120 network device processes the UL signals from each terminal device with multiple antennas and using different decomposition schemes. Then, the 120 network device can derive beam weights and estimate the Direction of Arrival for each 110 terminal device. This type of beamforming is called non-codebook-based beamforming. The 110 terminal device can be configured to report Channel Quality Indicator (CQI), CSI-RS Feature Indicator (CRI), and classification based on transmitted CSI-RS signals. The Link Adaptation uses the reported CSI to decide the Coding and Modulation Scheme (MCS) and the number of layers used for DL transmission.
[0045] Non-codebook-based beamforming configuration is currently enabled and allows terminal device 110 to be configured to report an exemplary non-PMI feedback feature indicator-rating indicator-channel quality indicator (CRI-RI-CQI). The Petition 870250090232, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 97 / 121 The 11 / 24 terminal device 110 can be configured with multiple CSI-RS resources and the port index to report classifications using non-PMI-PortIndication. This parameter is an arrangement and allows configuring resources from one or more ResourceSets. However, there is no way for the UE to understand and identify the resources to be used for different Spatial Adaptation Patterns.
[0046] For the topic of network power saving, multiple options for configuring spatial adaptation patterns are being explored. This includes configuring additional CSI-RS resources within a ResourceSet or in a different ResourceSet. There is also discussion about spatial adaptation, where the number of UE-adapted ports can be a subset of the initially configured ports.
[0047] There are no solutions yet to achieve this. Also, when UEs are configured for / with non-pre-coding array indicator (PMI) feedback and configured with a “non-PMI-PortIndication”, there is no way to indicate to the UE which of the features correspond to a specific adaptation pattern. And, currently, there is no possibility to enable this non-PMI feedback considering dynamic spatial / antenna pattern adaptation.
[0048] According to some exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure, a solution is provided for spatial adaptation for network ES. In the solution, network device 120 transmits information associated with spatial pattern adaptation in a network device to terminal device 110. The information associated with spatial pattern adaptation in a network device comprises one or more sets of patterns, each corresponding to a spatial pattern and being associated with a CSI-RS resource group; and / or one or more subsets of ports, each subset indicating the number of ports in a spatial pattern in the network device. Then, terminal device 110 transmits, to network device 120, at least one CSI report based on at least the information associated with spatial pattern adaptation.
[0049] Exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[0050] Reference is now made to FIG. 2, which shows a signaling diagram 200 for communication according to some exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 2, the signaling diagram 200 involves a terminal device 110 and a network device 120. For the purpose of discussion, reference is made to FIG. 1 to describe the signaling diagram 200. Although a single terminal device 110 is illustrated in FIG. 2, it may be Petition 870250090232, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 98 / 121 12 / 24 noted that there may be a plurality of terminal devices performing similar operations as described in relation to terminal device 110 below.
[0051] A network device 120 may be able to derive beam patterns for different spatial adaptations. If feedback from the terminal device 110 is available in advance, the network device 120 can apply the adaptation dynamically at any point in time.
[0052] Network device 120 transmits (202) information associated with spatial pattern matching on network device 120. Optionally, the information associated with spatial pattern matching may include one or more pattern sets. Each pattern set may correspond to a spatial pattern and be associated with a CSI-RS resource group. Optionally or additionally, the information associated with spatial pattern matching may include one or more port subsets. Each subset may indicate the number of ports in a spatial pattern on the network device.
[0053] For example, terminal device 110 can be indicated via a radio resource control (RRC) signaling, whose CSI-RS resources are mapped to a certain Spatial Adaptation pattern.
[0054] After receiving the information associated with spatial pattern adaptation, terminal device 110 can perform (204) corresponding CSI measurement(s) associated with one or more spatial patterns on network device 120.
[0055] In some embodiments, a terminal device can be configured with one or more CSI-RS resources in one or more ResourceSets (CSI-RS). A terminal device can be configured with “non-PMI-PortIndication” to indicate the CSI-RS port indexes to be used to derive the classification indicator.
[0056] For example, there are 2 options for configuring CSI-RS resources associated with different spatial adaptations, namely, Option 1 - configures a ResourceSet by spatial pattern; and Option 2 - configures groups of multiple CSI-RS Resources within a ResourceSet, where each group corresponds to the spatial / antenna pattern.
[0057] An example of configuring CSI-RS features associated with different spatial adaptations is shown in FIG. 3, where two options, 301 and 302, with reference to Option 1 and Option 2, as mentioned above, respectively, are listed. Even without explicitly configuring the features Petition 870250090232, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 99 / 121 For CSI-RS 13 / 24, a terminal device must be configured to report CSI for multiple adaptation patterns.
[0058] As described above, the terminal device 110 can be equipped, for example, with information associated with spatial pattern matching, from one or more pattern sets, which can also be called a “PatternSet” parameter, to indicate groups of features that are mapped to a specific spatial / antenna pattern. That is, each pattern set in one or more pattern sets can correspond to a spatial pattern and be associated with a group of CSI-RS features. An example of the message is listed below: ____________Table 1: an example of indicating “ PatternSet'____________ patternList SEQUENCE (SIZE(1..max-patterns-allowed)) OFPatternSet PatternSet:: = SEQUENCE { resourceSetId NZP-CSI-RS-ResourceSetId resourcesList SEQUENCE (SIZE (1..8)) OFNZP-CSI-RS-ResourceId reportingFactor CHOICE { one, half, one-fourth} OPTIONAL}
[0059] As shown in Table 1, for each PatternSet, within the patternList, the terminal device 110 can perform the CSI measurement(s) and / or report CSI according to the linked CSI-ReportConfig.
[0060] In some embodiments, the 110 terminal device can perform a CSI measurement for a group of CSI-RS features associated with a spatial pattern in one or more pattern sets and generate a CSI report for the spatial pattern in one or more pattern sets based on the CSI measurement and a CSI reporting configuration.
[0061] When terminal device 110 is configured with non-PMI-PortIndication, terminal device 110 may need to know the CSI-RS feature set to determine the CRI. Consequently, terminal device 110 can apply the patternList (including one or more pattern sets) to the non-PMI-PortIndication list and derive the set (subset) of CSI-RS features that needs to be measured, and determine the CRI or RI for a specific pattern. A mapping between the patternList and the non-PMI port indication is listed below. [0062] In some embodiments, if the non-PMI port indication is configured, the 110 terminal device may apply one or more pattern sets to a set of CSI RS features in the non-PMI port indications in order to determine at least one subset of CSI RS features from the non-PMI port indications and determine a CSI report for a spatial pattern in one or more pattern sets based on the determined at least one subset of CSI RS features. Petition 870250090232, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pages 101 / 121 15 / 24
[0063] In this situation, terminal device 110 can report the “cri-ri-CQI” for each PatternSet in the CSI report. The bit widths for the various CSI fields (such as CRI and classification indicator) should be derived based on the number of features configured within the PatternSet.
[0064] In some embodiments, as described above, the 110 terminal device may be provided, for example, with information associated with spatial pattern adaptation, of one or more port subsets, which may also be called a “PortSubset” parameter; each subset may indicate a number or set of ports in the spatial pattern. Then, the 110 terminal device may derive the CSI-RS location using this parameter and the Code Division Multiplexing (CDM) group in the original CSI-RS resource configuration. [0065] When the terminal device is not explicitly configured with CSI-RS capabilities for each standard, terminal device 110 must be provided with the PortSubset for each standard. This contains the number of ports, and the parameter indicates how many CSI-RS ports apply to the new standard. The PortSubset indication may also contain the slotOffset, which indicates when the CSI-RS for the new standard should be transmitted in reference to the configured CSI-RS. The slotOffsets must be configured so that there is sufficient time for the terminal device to measure the different standards and report the CSI at the same configured reporting interval.
[0066] In some configurations, as shown in Table 3, at least one slot offset can be configured along with one or more port subsets. Each slot offset can be associated with a port subset, where each slot offset indicates when one or more CSI-RS resources are available for the number of ports associated with the port subset. Petition 870250090232, dated 03 / 10 / 2025, pp. 102 / 121 16 / 24 corresponding values must be measured. The slot offset may refer to the original CSI-RS transmission.
[0067] FIG. 4 shows an example of slot shift configuration for spatial adaptation patterns according to some exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, terminal device 110 can derive when CSI-RS features 402 associated with a first spatial pattern are measured based on an original CSI-RS transmission 401 and slot shift 411 and derive when CSI-RS features 403 associated with a second spatial pattern are measured based on an original CSI-RS transmission 401 and slot shift 412.
[0068] Furthermore, in some embodiments, based on Table 2 as listed above, if the non-PMI port indication is configured, the terminal device 110 may apply one or more port subsets to the non-PMI port indications in order to determine at least one CSI RS feature subset from the non-PMI port indications and determine a CSI report for a spatial pattern in one or more pattern sets based on the determined at least one CSI RS feature subset.
[0069] Based on the CSI measurements performed by terminal device 110, as described above, terminal device 110 can generate at least one CSI report and transmit it (206) to network device 120.
[0070] In some exemplary embodiments, a reporting factor, namely a “reportingFactor” parameter, may also be provided for the terminal device 110. The reporting factor may be set by default and indicate a time interval for reporting the CSI report associated with a certain spatial pattern. The reporting factor may reduce the overhead of CSI reports for each pattern.
[0071] For example, depending on the reporting factor, the terminal device may report the CSI for all standards, in every reporting instance, or every alternate reporting instance, and so on. That is, in some exemplary embodiments, network device 120 may transmit the CSI report to network devices 120 based on the reporting factor.
[0072] Based on the solution of the present disclosure, a mechanism to indicate to the EU which of the resources correspond to a specific adaptation standard can be achieved and, therefore, network energy savings can be further enhanced.
