Description

1 / 15 Extendable rear door system for vehicles FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[001] This disclosure relates to cargo compartments and rear doors of vehicles, and more particularly to extendable rear door systems and vehicles incorporating such systems, which facilitate the safe transport of loads exceeding such cargo compartment lengths. BACKGROUND

[002] In general, motor vehicles, such as pickup trucks, include a cargo compartment with a fixed load capacity. For example, the load capacity of a short-bed pickup truck is limited by the typical length of a pickup truck bed, approximately six feet with the tailgate closed. Even with the tailgate open in the horizontal position, the length of the cargo compartment and the extension added by the lowered tailgate remain below eight feet. The extension of the cargo compartment is limited by the longitudinal dimensions of the open tailgate. Transporting loads, such as common construction materials like eight-foot-long plywood or drywall sheets, with a length that exceeds the length of the cargo compartment and the extension added by the lowered tailgate, is a challenge.Ropes, elastic straps, or other means of securing the load are necessary to prevent it from sliding backward and possibly falling out of the pickup truck bed.

[003] Some state-of-the-art pickup truck bed extenders include a frame and / or tray that extends rearward or is integrated into the pickup truck bed of a pickup truck. In some states of the art, the tray extends over the tailgate hinged to the truck bed when the tailgate is opened in a position Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, page 15 / 62 2 / 15 horizontal or folded down to stay out of the way. Many state-of-the-art pickup truck bed extenders require restraint means for the safe transport of cargo when the tailgate is open in the horizontal position or folded down to stay out of the way. Therefore, a pickup truck capable of safely carrying cargo exceeding the length of the pickup truck bed without any additional restraint means would be beneficial. SUMMARY

[015] A vehicle, typically a pickup truck, comprising a vehicle body and an extendable tailgate system, including the tailgate. The tailgate has an inner side that faces forward when the tailgate is closed. The term inner side is used in the present invention to describe this tailgate side, regardless of the orientation of the tailgate. A pivoting member is attached to the rear portion of the vehicle body and is positioned between the vehicle body and the tailgate. In some embodiments, the pivoting member includes a tube-shaped joint. One end of a first guiding member and one end of a second guiding member are rotatably connected to a first end of the pivoting member and a second end of the pivoting member, respectively. One side panel of the rear door and one side panel of the rear door are connected by sliding joints. Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, page 20 / 62 7 / 15 to the first guiding member and the second guiding member, respectively. In some embodiments, the first guiding member and the second guiding member each include at least one slot. A first pin of at least two pins is mounted on the first transverse side of the rear door, and a second pin of at least two pins is mounted on the second transverse side of the rear door, wherein the first pin and the second pin are slidably connected with at least one slot of the first guiding member and with at least one slot of the second guiding member, respectively. In some embodiments, each guiding member includes two slots, and two pins are mounted on each transverse side of the rear door. The two pins mounted on each transverse side of the rear door are slidably connected with the two slots of the respective guiding member. In some versions, at least some pins are mounted on the transverse sides of the rear door using a bracket, such as an L-shaped metal bracket.

[016] The pivoting member facilitates the rotation of the pair of guiding members and the tailgate connected to them relative to the vehicle body, from a closed tailgate position to an open tailgate position. Initially, the tailgate is rotated to an essentially horizontal open position, without any tailgate extension. When the tailgate is in the open tailgate position, the tailgate translates in a longitudinal direction, away from the vehicle body, relative to the pair of guiding members to transition from a retracted tailgate position to an extended tailgate position. Conversely, when the tailgate is still in the open tailgate position, the tailgate translates in a longitudinal direction, towards the vehicle body, relative to the pair of members. Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, page 21 / 62 8 / 15 guides, from the extended rear door position to the retracted rear door position. The driving force for this extension and retraction can be provided by the user by pushing and pulling the horizontal rear door, or by means of a mechanical linkage driven by an electric motor that performs these actions. In order to facilitate the opening and closing of the rear door, a gas-assisted lift assist mechanism can be employed to control the speed at which the rear door opens and reduce the effort required to close the rear door.

[017] A first locking mechanism is configured to lock the pair of guiding members and the tailgate connected to them, at least in the retracted tailgate position and in the extended tailgate position. In some embodiments, the first locking mechanism comprises an integral engagement system or other locking mechanism. When the tailgate is in the open tailgate position, the first locking mechanism is released to transition the pair of guiding members and the tailgate connected to them from the retracted tailgate position to the extended tailgate position. Conversely, when the tailgate is in the open tailgate position, the first locking mechanism is released to transition the pair of guiding members and the tailgate connected to them from the extended tailgate position to the retracted tailgate position. In some embodiments, the tailgate is partially extended and locked in one or more positions between the retracted tailgate position and the extended tailgate position. In some embodiments, the tailgate is extended by up to four inches from its retracted tailgate position, although shorter or longer extensions may be provided.

[018] In some embodiments, a load locking member Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, p. 22 / 62 9 / 15 transported load is mounted on the inner side of the tailgate, in proximity to a rear edge of the tailgate, distal to the pivoting member. Said rear edge of the tailgate faces rearward when the tailgate is in the open tailgate position; it is always distal to the pivoting member and in the present invention is referred to as the rear edge, regardless of the tailgate orientation. The transported load locking member is configured to transition from a stored position to an activated position, wherein the transported load locking member prevents a transported load from sliding out of the vehicle's cargo compartment when the tailgate is in the open tailgate position and the transported load locking member is in the activated position. In some embodiments, the transported load locking member includes a panel, the dimensions of which may vary in different embodiments. The panel can be rotatably mounted on the inner side of the rear door. The panel can be flat or coplanar with the inner side of the rear door when the panel is in the stored position and perpendicular to the inner side of the rear door when the panel is in the activated position. In some embodiments, the panel rotates 180 degrees from the stored position to an open panel position, which facilitates loading and unloading cargo. The panel can be flat or coplanar with the inner side of the rear door in the open panel position. In some embodiments, a second locking mechanism is configured to lock the cargo-carrying locking member at least in the activated position. The second locking mechanism can also lock the cargo-carrying support member in the stored position and in the open panel position. The second locking mechanism comprises a latch, linkages, springs, or other locking mechanism. Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, page 23 / 62 10 / 15

[019] In some embodiments, a first cable of fixed length is connected at one end to a first transverse side of the vehicle's cargo compartment and connected at a second end to the first guiding member, and a second cable of fixed length is connected at one end to a second transverse side of the vehicle's cargo compartment and connected at a second end to the second guiding member.

[020] In some embodiments, a gap cover covers a gap between the tailgate and the vehicle body, including the pivoting member, when the tailgate is in the extended tailgate position. In some embodiments, the gap cover includes a slidingly connected gap cover plate housed within the tailgate. The gap cover plate is actuated by translating longitudinally toward the vehicle body relative to the tailgate when the tailgate moves to the extended tailgate position, and retracts into the tailgate by translating longitudinally away from the vehicle body relative to the tailgate when the tailgate moves to the retracted tailgate position.Alternatively, the gap cover plate can be activated and retracted after the tailgate has moved completely to the extended and retracted tailgate positions, respectively. In some embodiments, the gap cover plate is attached to the tailgate, such as on the inner side or on an inner edge opposite the rear edge of the tailgate, or it is mounted inside the tailgate between the inner side and an outer side adjacent to the pivoting member. In some embodiments, the gap cover plate is activated when the tailgate is extended to the extended tailgate position and retracts when the tailgate is retracted to the tailgate position. Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, p. 24 / 62 11 / 15 retracted. In some embodiments, the gap cover overlaps and attaches to the pivoting member. In some embodiments, the gap cover is attached to the pivoting member using spring-loaded pins, such as rivet screws, or other suitable means.

[021] In another aspect of the invention, a vehicle includes the extendable rear door system and embodiments thereof described in the present invention.

[022] Figures 1A to 1C illustrate an embodiment of an extendable rear door system for a vehicle. In Figures 1B and 1C, the interior of the rear door (3) is exposed to better illustrate the hidden components of the extendable rear door system. A tube-shaped hinge (1) with two transverse ends is attached to a rear portion of a vehicle body (2) and is positioned between the vehicle body (2) and a rear door (3). One end of a first guiding member (4) and one end of a second guiding member (5) are rotatably connected to a first end of the hinge (1) and a second end of the hinge (1), respectively. A first transverse side of the rear door (3) and a second transverse side of the rear door (3) are slidably connected to the first guiding member (4) and the second guiding member (5), respectively. The first guide member (4) and the second guide member (5) each include two slots (6). Two pins (7) are mounted on each transverse side of the rear door (3) and are slidingly connected with the two slots (6) of the respective guide member (4) or (5). At least two pins of the pins (7) are mounted on the transverse sides of the rear door (3) using L-brackets (8). A first fixed-length cable (9) is connected at one end to a first transverse side of a cargo compartment (10) and connected at a second end to the first guide member (4), and a second. Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, page 25 / 62 12 / 15 fixed length cable (11) is connected at one end to a second transverse side of cargo compartment (10) and connected at a second end to the second guiding member (5).

[023] In Figure 1A, the rear door (3) is in the closed rear door position, while in Figures 1B and 1C the rear door (3) is in the open rear door position. The hinge (1) facilitates the rotation of the pair of guiding members (4), (5) and the rear door (3) connected to them in relation to the vehicle body (2), from the closed rear door position to the open rear door position. In Figure 1B, the open rear door (3) is in a retracted rear door position, while in Figure 1C, the open rear door (3) is in an extended rear door position. When the rear door (3) is in the open rear door position, it can be extended or retracted.Under the mechanical control of a user pulling the rear door, or of a mechanical linkage controlled by an electric motor, the rear door (3) translates in a longitudinal direction, away from the vehicle body (2), relative to the pair of guiding members (4), (5) to make the transition from the retracted rear door position to the extended rear door position. Conversely, when pushed by a user or under the reverse mechanical control of an electric motor and linkage, the rear door (3) translates in a longitudinal direction, towards the vehicle body (2), relative to the pair of guiding members (4), (5) from the extended rear door position to the retracted rear door position. An integral engagement system comprising engagements (12a), (12b), a pin (12c) mounted on the guiding member (4) and a release button (12d) locks the pair of guiding members (4), (5) and the tailgate (3) connected to them, both in the retracted tailgate position and in the extended tailgate position. From the extended tailgate position, the tailgate (3) translates in the direction. Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, page 26 / 62 13 / 15 longitudinal, towards the vehicle body (2), until the coupling (12a) engages with the pin (12c) to lock the pair of guiding members (4), (5), and the rear door (3) connected to them, in the retracted rear door position. The release button (12d) is pressed to release the coupling (12a) or (12b) from the pin (12c) so that the pair of guiding members (4), (5) and the rear door (3) connected to them, are free to move in a longitudinal direction towards or away from the vehicle body (2). Starting from the retracted rear door position, the rear door (3) moves in the longitudinal direction, away from the vehicle body (2), until the coupling (12b) engages with the pin (12c) to lock the pair of guiding members (4), (5), and the rear door (3) connected to them, in the extended rear door position. The integral coupling system is released to transition the pair of guiding members (4), (5) and the tailgate (3) connected to them, from the retracted tailgate position to the extended tailgate position or vice versa, all while the tailgate (3) is in the open tailgate position.

[024] Figures 2A to 2C illustrate another embodiment of the extendable tailgate system described in Figures 1A to 1C, wherein a panel (13) is rotatably mounted on an inner side of the tailgate (3). In Figure 2A, the panel (13) is in a stored position while in Figure 2B, the panel (13) is in an activated position. The panel (13) prevents a transported load (14) from sliding out of the cargo compartment (10) when the tailgate (3) is in the open tailgate position and the panel (13) is in the activated position. The panel (13) is preferably coplanar with the inner side of the tailgate (3) when the panel (13) is in the stored position and perpendicular to the inner side of the tailgate (3) when the panel (13) is in the activated position. In Figure 2C, the panel (13) is rotated 180 degrees from the stored position to an open panel position, Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, page 27 / 62 14 / 15 wherein the panel (13) is again preferably coplanar with the inner side of the rear door (3). The panel (13) is hinged in cutouts in the rear door (3), however, the panel (13) may also be hinged to the rear door (3) without any cutouts in the rear door (3) using gooseneck joints or other means. An engagement locks the panel (13) at least in the engaged position. An engagement trigger (15) releases the engagement to unlock the panel (13) from the engaged position to transition the panel (13) to the stored position or to the open panel position. The engagement may also lock the panel (13) in the stored position and in the open panel position.

[025] Figures 3A and 3B illustrate another embodiment of an extendable tailgate system, including a gap cover plate (16) covering a gap (17) between the tailgate (3) and the hinge (1) when the tailgate (3) is in the open and extended tailgate position. The gap cover plate (16) is slidingly connected and housed within the tailgate (3). The gap cover plate (16) overlaps and is attached to the hinge (1) using rivet screws (18), although other fasteners may be used. In Figure 3A, the gap cover plate (16) is retracted into the tailgate (3), while in Figure 3B the gap cover plate (16) is engaged. When the tailgate (3) is in the open tailgate position, the tailgate (3) may be either in the retracted tailgate position or in the extended tailgate position. The gap cover plate (16) is activated when the rear door (3) is extended from the retracted rear door position to the extended rear door position, whereby the gap cover plate (16) translates in the longitudinal direction, towards the vehicle body (2), relative to the rear door (3). Conversely, with the rear door (3) starting in the extended rear door position, the gap cover plate (16) retracts as the rear door is extended. Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, p. 28 / 62 15 / 15 rear door (3) is retracted to the retracted rear door position, wherein the gap cover plate (16) retracts into the rear door (3) as it moves in the longitudinal direction away from the vehicle body (2), relative to the rear door (3). Alternatively, the gap cover plate (16) may be actuated after the rear door is fully in the extended rear door position.

[026] It should be understood that, although particular component arrangements are disclosed in the illustrated embodiments, other arrangements will benefit from this invention. Other means of creating the same result within the context of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. For example, the gap cover plate may rotate instead of translating longitudinally and may be mounted on the vehicle body instead of the rear door.

[027] Although the different examples have specific components shown in the illustrations, the embodiments of this invention are not limited to these particular combinations. It is possible to use some of the components or attributes from one of the examples in combination with attributes or components from another of the examples. Although exemplary embodiments have been disclosed, a person skilled in the art would recognize that certain modifications would fall within the scope of the claims. For this reason, the following claims should be studied to determine their true scope and content. Petition 870260019337, dated 02 / 03 / 2026, page 29 / 62
