Abstract
The present invention relates to a method for producing a cathode active material, comprising at least partial dissolution of trihydrated iron fluoride (IFH) in a polar solvent, resulting in a solution; the addition of water to the solution, which precipitates a compound comprising hydrated pyrochlore hydroxylated iron fluoride (Pyr-IHFH); the separation of the precipitated compound from the solution; and heating the separated precipitated compound to a temperature between 50 and 400 °C, resulting in the cathode active material comprising pyrochlore hydroxylated iron fluoride (Pyr-IHFH), wherein the addition of water to the solution converts the IFH to Pyr-IHFH. The invention also relates to a cathode active material comprising Pyr-IHFH, a cathode comprising the cathode active material, and a battery comprising the cathode.
