Ponds for water retention in the landscape

Abstract

A pond (1) for water retention in the landscape contains a water reservoir (2) and an earthen embankment (3) for water retention. The earthen embankment (3) surrounds the water reservoir (2) over at least one quarter of its circumference. The water reservoir (2) includes a bottom. The pond also contains a subsurface clay layer to limit the escape of water from the water reservoir (2) by subsurface seepage. The subsurface clay layer is located at least beneath a portion of the earthen embankment (3). At least a portion of the earthen embankment (3) is in contact with the subsurface clay layer.
