Abstract

This disclosure includes systems and methods for extracting a target element, such as lithium, from a brine. For example, some aspects include a lithium extraction method comprising mixing a first brine with an extraction agent to form a first solution containing a lithium complex, which includes lithium bound to the extraction agent. The method may further include extracting the lithium from the first solution and recycling the extraction agent for use in a subsequent extraction process. In some aspects, the extraction of lithium from the first solution comprises adsorbing the lithium complex from the first solution using an adsorbent medium, removing the lithium complex from the adsorbent medium, and separating the lithium from the extraction agent within the lithium complex.
