Abstract

The compositions and formulations of lime-based cement extenders or cement replacements, and the associated systems and methods, are described herein. In some embodiments, a lime-based cement extender or cement replacement composition includes at least 5% by weight of lime particles and at least 50% by weight of pozzolan particles. In some embodiments, the pozzolan particles include silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide. In some embodiments, the composition may be combined with blends and / or aggregates to produce a formulation. The formation may have at least 5,000 ppm of soluble sulfate and an alumina:silica ratio of at least 0.2:1. Methods for accelerating the formation of aluminum and calcium sulfates to prevent sulfate attack during critical periods include producing a formulation with a high aluminum oxide content, using additives configured to accelerate certain chemical reactions, and omitting limestone.Methods to delay the formation of calcium and aluminum sulfates to prevent sulfate attack during critical periods include producing a formulation with mixtures configured to delay certain chemical reactions.
