Embodiment Construction

[0019] The gas discharge lamp 1 shown in the side view of FIG. 1 is a high-pressure gas discharge lamp for motor vehicle headlights, which is commonly referred to as a so-called MPXL lamp (micropower xenon lamp). The lamp 1 has a cover 2 for mounting the lamp 1 in a motor vehicle headlight. For this purpose, the cover 2 is provided with sockets and alignment marks (not shown) so that the lamp 1 is fixed in such a way that it can be clamped and the lamp 1 is positioned in the alignment of the headlight. Location. For the sake of clarity, the contacts provided on the cover 2 for the external power supply are also not shown.

[0020] Mounted in the cover 2 is a lamp cap 3 made of quartz comprising a first necked end 4 , a discharge chamber 5 and a second necked end 6 . The lamp base 3 is fixed in the cover 2 with its second neck-shaped end. An electrode 7 , 8 is sealed in each case in the neck ends 4 , 6 , which hermetically seal the discharge chamber. Said electrodes 7, 8 co...

Abstract

The invention relates to a gas-discharge lamp having a discharge vessel ( 5 ), two electrodes ( 7, 8 ), a cap ( 2 ), an outer envelope ( 11 ), and a filling in the discharge vessel comprising a metal halide. Gas-discharge lamps of this kind are used in particular as light sources for the headlight systems of motor vehicles. In order to easily improve the quality of the color of the beam from the lamp, particularly for application in an optical imaging system such as a reflector of a motor vehicle headlight, the outer envelope of the gas-discharge lamp is partially coated with an optical compensating filter ( 13 ) of a color complementary to the color of the metal halide. In gas-discharge lamps of the generic kind, that proportion ( 15 ) of salts in the filling that is not in the gaseous state when the lamp is operating produces a coloration in the beam generated. The yellowish condensate ( 15 ) in the discharge vessel causes an area of yellowish coloration in the beam. By partially coating the outer envelope with a compensating filter, the unwanted coloration in the beam can be corrected if the filter is of the appropriate complementary color.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a gas discharge lamp having a discharge chamber, two electrodes, a cover, a housing and a filling comprising a metal halide in the discharge chamber. Background technique [0002] Such gas discharge lamps are used in particular as light sources for automotive headlight systems, since the optical properties of the gas discharge lamps offer a series of advantages (eg brighter). The fill in the discharge chamber permanently regenerates the discharge plasma, and such lamps require a portion of metal halide (salt fraction) in their fill to control the color of the light and the efficacy of the lamp. When the lamp is operated, this salt portion of the filling forms a yellowish condensate, which usually sits at the bottom of the cavity. This yellowish region also appears in the beam of the headlight when the image of the lamp is reproduced by the optics of the headlight. This yellowish area is thus typically at the front of the beam...
