Problems solved by technology

i.e. the housing may be larger at least in this part and may detract from the appearance of the outboard motor
On the other hand, for example, if the whole hull needs to be of such large dimensions from the point of view of appearance, then the submerged submerged part below the middle may also be larger and may suffer when the ship moves forward or astern Greater resistance from the water body

Embodiment Construction

[0026] refer to figure 1 and figure 2 , the overall structure of the outboard motor 30 as a preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described below. Outboard motor 30 is just one example of outboard drive. The invention can be applied to other outboard drives, whether the drive is called an outboard motor or not.

[0027] The outboard motor 30 preferably has a mounting unit 32 and a drive unit 34 .

[0028] The mounting unit 32 supports the drive unit 34 on the stern 36 of the associated vessel 38 and places the vessel propulsion equipment such as the propeller 40 belonging to the drive unit 34 in a submerged position when the vessel 38 is at rest relative to the surface of the body of water. The drive unit 34 can be tilted up (raise) and down (lowered) relative to the vessel 38 .

[0029] As used throughout this specification, unless otherwise indicated or apparent from the context of use, the terms "forward" and "front" refer to on or towards the side on w...

Abstract

The invention discloses an outboard drive comprising a prime mover having an output shaft. The drive shaft is coupled to the output shaft. A propulsion device is coupled to the drive shaft. The prime mover rotates the output shaft to drive the propulsion equipment through the drive shaft. A transmission mechanism is positioned between the output shaft and the drive shaft. The variator changes the rotational speed transmitted from the output shaft to the drive shaft.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to outboard drives having a speed change mechanism, and more particularly to outboard drives having a speed change mechanism for transmitting a rotational speed different from the output speed of the prime mover. Background technique [0002] An outboard drive is coupled to an associated vessel to propel the vessel forward or backward. An outboard motor is a common type of such outboard drive. [0003] Generally, an outboard motor includes a drive unit and a mounting unit. The mounting unit can be fixed to the stern for mounting the drive unit on the associated vessel. The drive unit includes an engine on top as a prime mover. The engine includes a substantially vertically extending crankshaft as the output shaft of the engine. A drive shaft is coupled to the crankshaft and extends downward from the crankshaft. The propulsion shaft is coupled to the drive shaft and extends substantially perpendicular to the ...
