Abstract

A method of diagnosing a malfunction of an intake motion control valve coupled to an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine is provided. The method includes: commanding the valve to perform at least one of closing and opening; determining a pressure range using fuzzy logic based on a mass of air flowing into the intake manifold and a temperature of air flowing into the intake manifold; determining an absolute pressure change within the intake manifold; comparing the absolute pressure change to the pressure range; and diagnosing valve failure when the absolute pressure change is within the pressure range.
