Problems solved by technology

[0016] The main problem with existing memory alloy surgical clips is that they can only compress 80-85% of the circumference of the joint, thus requiring additional hand suturing, which reduces the seal of the joint during healing and the elasticity of the joint after surgery
Moreover, this additional suture is problematic because it must be performed across the joint, which includes a portion of the surgical clip, thereby increasing the difficulty of sealing and anastomosis of the organ parts

Embodiment Construction

[0049] The present invention seeks to provide a surgical clip substantially as described in Applicant's co-pending US Application No. 09 / 592,518 entitled "Surgical Clip". The surgical clip is at least partially made of a shape memory alloy as is known in the art, and it can provide compression of the organ tissue along the entire periphery of the clip, thereby ensuring satisfactory attachment or anastomosis of the organ parts. The present invention also seeks to provide means for positioning and placing surgical clips which, moreover, are capable of perforating a portion of tissue held within the placed surgical clip, thereby creating an initial patency of the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, the present invention provides methods and systems for performing anastomoses of organ portions, such as portions of the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract

An anastomotic clip placer device (134) is disclosed for placing a surgical clip (12) at least partially made of a shape memory alloy such that adjacent wall portions of adjacent hollow organ parts Press together to complete the fit between them. The placer device (134) includes a clamping device for clamping the clip (12), a release device associated with the clamping device, and a tissue cutting device (124) operatively associated with the clamping device. Means are also provided for mobilizing said clamping means, said releasing means and said cutting means to introduce and place a surgical clip (12) in an adjacent hollow organ part such that said surgical clip (12) ) compress adjacent walls of the hollow organ parts together, followed by causing the cutting device (124) to perforate the compressed together adjacent walls of the organ to provide an opening through the connecting portion of the hollow organ.

Description

[0001] Citations from Co-Pending Applications [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of US Application Serial No. 09 / 592,518, filed June 12, 2000, entitled "Surgical Clips," the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. field of invention [0003] The present invention relates generally to the field of surgical clips, and more particularly to the field of surgical clip applicators. [0004] definition [0005] Anastomosis: Joining parts or branches (eg, of hollow organs or blood vessels) so as to communicate with each other. Background of the invention [0006] Methods for joining parts of hollow organs such as the gastrointestinal tract are provided in the prior art. These methods include manual suturing with surgical threads, mechanical suturing with staples, and compression surgical rings and clips. [0007] Manual suturing is a well-known and relatively inexpensive method, but its success rate depends largely on the skill of the surge...
