Embodiment Construction

[0020] The present invention provides improved ID tags (eg, tags) and methods of making and using such ID tags. Improved ID tags can be coupled to components (eg, field replaceable units (FRUs)) and use indicators that provide a constant clear visual or audible signal that the component meets quality requirements. Such signals can be observed by humans. For example, a portion of the improved ID tag could serve as a continuously clear visual or audible indicator. In some embodiments, the color of the set indicator may be based on the quality of the part. For example, if a part does not meet quality requirements, the indicator color can be set to a first color, such as red, and remain that color. Alternatively, if the part meets quality requirements, the indicator color can be set to another color such as green, and / or remain that color.

[0021] In a product manufacturing environment, improved ID tags can be coupled to corresponding components. Indicators can be placed on m...

Abstract

The present invention discloses identification device mark and method for identifying component subset of a plurality of components. In a first aspect, a first apparatus is provided. The first apparatus is an identification device (ID) tag that includes (1) a semiconductor chip; (2) an antenna coupled to the semiconductor chip; (3) a layer of material, coupled to the semiconductor chip, and adapted to provide a persistent visual or audible signal that is observable by a human being; and (4) a controller coupled to the layer of material and adapted to cause the material to provide the signal. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to identification devices (IDs) and, in particular, to ID tags and methods of using the same. Background technique [0002] Identifying those parts that do not meet quality requirements is very important in a product manufacturing environment. In some conventional manufacturing environments, products may be placed together (eg, in a warehouse) and physically marked to indicate quality levels. For example, parts that do not meet quality requirements can be put together and marked with a "BAD" label. For a large number of parts, such an approach may require a large number of personnel to perform efficiently. Therefore, such an approach may not be economically viable. [0003] In some other product manufacturing environments, conventional radio frequency identification (RFID) tags may be affixed to each defective part. Whether a part meets quality requirements is based on data stored in the RFID tag associated w...
