Problems solved by technology

Nozzles that produce extremely fine liquid particles are generally not suitable for agricultural applications because the discharged spray may be affected by unwanted flotation
However, even with nozzles specifically designed for agricultural applications, it can be difficult to achieve complete coverage of the crop canopy by the downwardly directed spray because it is often difficult for the spray to achieve good penetration of the crop canopy

Embodiment Construction

[0016] Referring now more specifically to the accompanying drawings, in figure 1 An exemplary spray bar 13 is shown in , on which are mounted a plurality of spray nozzle assemblies 17 each incorporating a spray tip 10 according to the present invention. When the spray tip of the present invention has specific use in spraying liquid chemicals for agricultural use, the spray boom may be the stem of an agricultural sprayer. The illustrated rod is the tubular member through which the supply liquid is directed to the individual spray nozzle assemblies. Additional details on how spray tips may be incorporated as part of a spray nozzle assembly mounted on the boom of an agricultural sprayer are disclosed in the aforementioned US Patent No. 5,275,340, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference.

[0017] refer to figure 2 and image 3 , in this case the spray tip 10 has a single-piece body 11, preferably molded from plastic, at its upstream end with an outwardly ex...

Abstract

A spray tip for discharging a controlled liquid spray distribution is provided. The spray tip includes a spray tip body having an inlet end for connection to a pressurized liquid supply. The spray tip body includes a first fluid chamber having a first longitudinal axis and a second fluid chamber in fluid communication with the first fluid chamber and having a second longitudinal axis that extendstransversely relative to the first longitudinal axis. A pair of discharge orifices are formed in the spray tip body. Each discharge orifice has a downstream side with a deflector surface for directing liquid discharging from the chamber. Each discharge orifice intersects the second fluid chamber adjacent a respective end thereof so as to define a pocket extending downstream of the deflector surface.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related applications [0002] This patent application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 720,181, filed September 23, 2005. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to spray nozzles, and more particularly to spray nozzles of the type having a spray tip with a transversely oriented deflector flange for effectuating a downwardly directed discharge spray pattern. Background technique [0004] Spray nozzle assemblies are known to include deflector flanges, such as shown in U.S. Patent No 5,275,340, assigned to the same assignee of the present invention, which promote breakup of liquid particles and direct the spray in a lateral direction. model. Such spray nozzles do not necessarily require pressurized air of the liquid stream to be atomized first. These spray nozzles have particular utility in spraying agricultural chemicals because they do not generate extremely fine liquid particles. Nozzles that p...
