Consumer testing and clinical studies have shown that monofilament floss with low abrasion glides better, while multifilament products clean better and remove more plaque, but are subject to wear and tear

Embodiment 1

[0041] The dental tape of the present invention was manufactured using PEBAX MX 1205 resin. The resin was dried over 3 hours at 75°C, fed into a Haake 20mm extruder using attached Slack and Parr gear melt pumps, and extruded through a shaped die formed of stainless steel with a shape similar to figure 1 A cross-section of the dental tape is shown. The extruded dental tape includes eleven ribs protruding from the first and second cleaning surfaces. The total width of the slot (w t ) is 0.303 inches. The thickness of the core body (t c ) is 0.0035 inches. The height and width of the edge of the mold (h r and w r ) are 0.0075 inches and 0.0035 inches, respectively. Spacing between adjacent edges on two clean surfaces (s r ) is 0.026 inches, and s ar and s r The ratio of is 0.5, ie the ribs on the second cleaning surface are positioned approximately midway between those on the first cleaning surface.

Embodiment 3

[0095] The dental tapes of the present invention were manufactured using PEBAX MX 1205 resin in which the stretching conditions were modified to change the dimensions of the final dental tape. The resin was dried at a temperature of 75°C over 3 hours and processed in the extruder of Example 1 using the ribbed die described in Example 1.

Abstract

The present invention includes monofilament dental tapes for removing plaque and / or food debris from interdental spaces of a mammal, which dental tapes have a core body with an aspect ratio of greater than about 5:1 and a first cleaning surface and a second cleaning surface opposite the first cleaning surface, where at least one of the first and second cleaning surfaces includes a plurality of ribs disposed along the length thereof, and where the ratio of the width of the dental tape to the thickness of the dental tape is from about 4:1 to about 25:1.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to ribbed dental strips for removing food particles or debris and plaque from interdental spaces. Background technique [0002] Dental flossing has been used for over 100 years to remove plaque and trapped food particles from between the teeth while providing a clean feeling in the mouth. The original dental floss consisted of twisted wire placed in a jar. Since then, many improvements have been made to flossing to make flossing more convenient and less problematic. Most of the improvements were aimed at addressing negative aspects of flossing. These include reducing wear and tear, providing easier interdental insertion and providing softer and larger gums and flossing. After the invention of nylon, high tenacity and abrasion-resistant yarns were used instead of silk threads to provide greater abrasion resistance. Waxes are added to the stranded multifilament yarns to help anchor the fibers together and provide a smoot...
