Embodiment Construction

[0031] Several methods and procedures are known in the art for forming green ceramic honeycomb structures characterized by a plurality of hollow passages or channels extending therethrough. The method of the present invention is directed to drying such structures, regardless of the specific method used to form the honeycomb shape. The method of the present invention for drying the ceramic honeycomb structure 10 is as described herein and includes providing microwaves from a microwave generating source 30 located within a microwave housing 32 ( Figure 4-6 ), the ceramic honeycomb structure 10 is exposed to microwave radiation, and at least one of the shielded ends 13, 16 avoids directly receiving microwave radiation, so that the radiation absorbed by the middle part 17 of the ceramic structure 10 is equal to or more than at least one end 13 , 16 The absorbed radiation. It should be noted that the method of the present invention can be used to treat plugged or unplugged cerami...

Abstract

A method for drying a ceramic article comprises providing microwave radiation from a microwave generating source, providing a ceramic honeycomb structure having a middle portion and at least one end, and exposing the ceramic honeycomb structure to the microwave radiation while shielding the at least one end from directly receiving the microwave radiation, such that the radiation absorbed by the middle portion is equal to or greater than the radiation absorbed by the at least one end, and the proper drying of the entire honeycomb structure without heat-induced structural degradation is thus ensured.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to a method of drying ceramic articles, particularly ceramic honeycomb structures, by means of a microwave dryer which promotes uniform drying of the honeycomb structure thereby mitigating or eliminating thermally induced degradation of the structure. [0002] Ceramic honeycomb structures with a cross-sectional through-hole density of about 1 / 10 to 100 or more through-holes (cells) or channels (channels) per square centimeter of honeycomb cross-section have several uses, including particle filters, catalytic substrates , and a fixed heat exchanger. Filtration applications often require selected through-holes in the structure to be sealed or plugged at one or both ends at each end, thereby enabling wall-flow filtration (i.e., filtering of a fluid through a structure by directing at least some fluid through its porous channel walls) . [0003] Ceramic honeycomb fabrication involves several known steps. Generally speaki...
