Problems solved by technology

Since the combustion chamber is not efficiently charged with fresh air, subsequent combustion cycles and fastener actuation will be ineffective, wasting fuel, battery power, and possible workpiece damage
It should be seen that simply allocating the time for combustion chamber gas charging after ignition will not ensure that charging has taken place

Embodiment Construction

[0024] now refer to figure 1 and 2 , a combustion powered fastener driving tool incorporating the present invention is indicated generally at 10 and is preferably of the general type listed above and described in detail in the patents incorporated by reference into this application. The housing 12 of the tool 10 incorporates a self-contained internal power source 14 ( figure 2 ) is packaged in the housing main chamber 16. As in conventional combustion tools, the power source 14 is powered by an internal combustion engine and includes a combustion chamber 18 in communication with a cylinder 20 . A piston 22 reciprocally arranged in a cylinder 20 is connected to an upper end of a driver blade 24 . Such as figure 2 As shown in , the upper limit of reciprocation of the piston 22 is referred to as the pre-firing position, which occurs only prior to the ignition of the firing or combustion gases, which initiates the downward drive of the driver blade 24 to strike the fastener ...

Abstract

A combustion nailer includes a tool housing, and a combustion engine substantially located within the housing and including a valve sleeve reciprocating relative to a cylinder head for cyclically opening and closing a combustion chamber. A control system is associated with the housing and is connected to the combustion engine for providing for a designated open time for the combustion chamber after a combustion event and before a subsequent combustion can occur.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority under 35 USC §120 based on US Serial No. 60 / 852,039 filed October 16, 2006. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to fastener driving tools for driving fasteners into workpieces, and more particularly to combustion powered fastener driving tools, also known as combustion tools or combustion nail guns. Background technique [0004] Combustion type nail guns are known in the prior art and are described in US Patent Re. No. 32,452 and US Patent Nos. 4,522,162; 4,483,473; 4,483,474; 4,403,722; Similar tools are available from Illinois Tool Works of Glenview, Illinois. [0005] Such tools incorporate a tool housing enclosing a small internal combustion engine or power source. The internal combustion engine is powered by a tank of pressurized fuel gas, also called a fuel chamber. A battery driven electronic distribution unit generates sparks for ignition and a fan located in the comb...
