Problems solved by technology

Although primary messages may reduce the amount of information required to convey system information, notification messages, which are typically broadcast in other streams such as the notification stream, may still be configured such that processing resources are limited to processing one or more waste of notifications
That is, notification messages are not targeted to a specific device or group of receiving devices, and therefore, receiving devices will expend resources to process notification messages even though those messages are not applicable to the device

Embodiment Construction

[0025] This disclosure describes apparatus and methods to enable the transfer of notification messages between a server and a device in communication with the server. By, for example, utilizing the server to transmit a main message in a main stream, wherein the main message includes brief or reduced data indicating whether a change in notification information has occurred, the receiving device can quickly determine whether it has received all required notifications. By processing this simplified message instead of more complex messages, processing and power resources of the device can be saved. Accordingly, the receiving device may achieve lower battery power consumption while also reducing the overall level of processing that needs to be performed by the device. Additionally, the required multicast bandwidth is reduced because shorter or simplified messages are sent first. Furthermore, the present invention introduces the use of notification messages within one or more notif...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for communication of notifications are disclosed. A disclosed method for communicating notifications from a server to a device includes sending a primary message including data indicating notification status information; and sending notification messages apart from the primary message addressed to specific groups of devices. Similarly, another disclosed method for obtaining notifications in a device from a server includes monitoring the primary message including current notification status information, comparing the current notification information status information with a previous notification status information to determine if a change in notification status information has occurred, and obtaining addressed notification information when a change in the notification status information has been determined. By using a primary message with abbreviated information to communicate whether changes to notification information have occurred without the need for further processing and / or addressed notification messages, system resources can be conserved. Corresponding apparatus are also disclosed.

Description

[0001] Claim of priority under 35 U.S.C. §119 [0002] This patent application claims priority to Provisional Application No. 60 / 864,567, filed November 6, 2006, entitled "METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR DELIVERY OF NOTIFICATIONS," and is claimed The said provisional application is assigned to the present assignee and is hereby expressly incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to a method and apparatus for delivering notifications, and more particularly to the delivery of notifications in a wireless communication system, wherein the primary message conveys the presence of a current notification and the notification message conveys an addressed notification information. Background technique [0004] In a wireless broadcast environment (e.g., in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) broadcast system), a wireless device must obtain the latest or updated system state Access and receive the latest data or cont...
