Embodiment Construction

[0011] refer to figure 1 An electric power steering system 10 includes a steering wheel 12 connected to a first end 14 of a steering shaft 16 . A steering pinion 18 coupled to a second end 20 of the steering shaft 16 , opposite the first end 14 , engages steering rack teeth 22 of a steering rack 24 . Each end of the steering rack 24 includes a tie rod 26 connected to a steerable wheel and tire assembly 28 in a conventional manner. It should be noted that although a vehicle with Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) is shown, the inventive subject matter can also be implemented using a generator and as such can be readily implemented by a person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the inventive subject matter. The convenience of EPAS eliminates the need for a separate generator.

Abstract

The invention discloses a steering wheel angle detection system which has a steering wheel angle sensor, a generator and a controller memory so that when the vehicle ignition switch is turned off, the movement of the steering wheel generates a current and allows the steering wheel angle sensor to detect changes in the steering wheel angle. Changes or indicators are stored in non-volatile RAM until the ignition is turned on. The generator may be a generator dedicated to the steering wheel angle sensor or it may be an electric motor that is part of an electric power steering system.

Description

technical field [0001] The subject matter of the present invention relates to a steering wheel angle sensor, and more particularly to a self-propelled steering wheel angle sensor for supplying power to the vehicle when the ignition switch is off. Background technique [0002] The steering angle sensor detects the steering angle of the steering wheel of the vehicle and provides the vehicle control system with the required signal to calculate the absolute steering wheel angle from the detected signal. When the vehicle is not in use, the ignition is off and there is usually no power supplied to the steering angle sensor as it is usually assumed that the steering wheel will remain stationary. However, in rare cases, the steering wheel is turned when the vehicle is stopped, and many vehicle control systems need to know the absolute steering wheel angle when the ignition is switched on. Therefore, there is a difference in the steering wheel angle sensed in the OFF state compared ...
