Problems solved by technology

[0012] Therefore, searching for all possible physical channels of all RATs that the UE can use in overlapping parts of the spectrum increases the overall search time and power consumption of the UE, and obviously has a negative impact on battery life and user experience

Embodiment Construction

[0022] The inventors have found that it is unnecessary to search for GSM channels overlapping with already discovered WCDMA cells, and conversely, it is not necessary to search for WCDMA channels overlapping with already discovered GSM cells. This unique principle is generally applicable to other two- or three-set RATs (eg, GSM and CDMA, GSM and 4G, etc.). It is therefore advantageous for the UE to prevent one RAT from searching for a cell at a frequency where another RAT has already found a cell, in order to save time and reduce power consumption.

[0023] figure 1 is a diagram of an exemplary mobile communication system 100 comprising a plurality of PLMNs 102a, 102b, 102c. It should be recognized that: in figure 1PLMN 102 is shown as a non-overlapping PLMN in , but this is done for clarity only. In general, PLMNs can overlap in different geographical areas. A conventional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) 104 communicates with the PLMNs through respective Gateway ...

Abstract

By adapting its search procedures, a user equipment in a mobile communication system can shorten the time needed to find a cell or public land mobile network. If a first cell in a first radio access technology has been found, the equipment can exclude one or more frequencies from a search for cells in a second radio access technology. Thus, time and power are not wasted searching for cells in thesecond radio access technology that cannot be found.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a communication system, in particular to a wireless communication system. Background technique [0002] As the number of frequency bands available for communication in mobile communication systems continues to increase, the time required for user equipment (UE) (eg, mobile phones or other remote terminals) to search for cells and public land mobile networks (PLMNs) also increases accordingly. Furthermore, the increased search time requires increased power consumption by typically power-constrained UEs. [0003] Mobile communication systems include time division multiple access (TDMA) systems (e.g., cellular radiotelephone systems conforming to the GSM telecommunications standard and its enhancements (GPRS / EDGE)) and code division multiple access (CDMA) systems (e.g., conforming to IS-95, CDMA2000 and Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) telecommunications standards for cellular radiotelephone systems). Digital communication systems ...
