Embodiment 1

[0083] A powder comprising fine abrasive aggregates of diamond abrasive and silica nanoparticles was produced as follows. Aqueous colloidal silica was mixed with diamond abrasives having an average particle size of 1.1 microns, polyethylene glycol (PEG) 200 plasticizer, and deionized water. The silica sol used was BINDZIL 2040 from Ika Chemicals, Marietta, Ga., using what is believed to be an aqueous colloidal silica solution containing approximately 40% by weight silica (SiO 2 ), the silica particle size is about 20 nm, and the alkali-stable pH is about 10. The components are mixed in the following amounts:

Abstract

An abrasive slurry comprises green, unfired abrasive aggregates provided in suspension, the aggregates having a generally spheroidal or toroidal shape, the aggregates formed from a composition comprising abrasive grit particles and a nanoparticle binder, wherein the nanoparticle binder forms a continuous matrix phase in which the abrasive grit particles are uniformly distributed. A bonded abrasive product also comprises such aggregates and an inter-aggregate bond material. The invention further relates to methods for forming abrasive particulate material and for machining a workpiece.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention generally relates to abrasive particulate materials, abrasive products incorporating abrasive particulate materials, and methods of machining workpieces. Background of the invention [0002] Abrasive products generally contain, or are formed from, abrasive particulate material. These abrasive particulate materials can be used as free abrasives (eg, in slurry form) or as fixed abrasives (typically coated abrasives or bonded abrasives). Abrasive products are used in various industries to machine workpieces, for example by lapping, lapping or polishing. Machining with abrasive articles covers a wide range from the optical industry, the automotive paint restoration industry, dental applications to the metal fabrication industry. In household applications, consumers also typically machine by hand, or with common tools such as orbital polishers (regular and fixed shaft), belt sanders, and vibratory sanders. In each of these instan...
