Problems solved by technology

However, these walkers often include relatively heavy and unwieldy equipment that does not provide versatility and evenly distributes the pressure from the walker on the patient's legs
In addition, many current walkers are deficient in that the walkers are constructed in such a way that they do not consistently provide, or are lacking in, the means to form secure, reliable contact between the wearer's legs and knees and the walker. Face conditioning features
As a result of these shortcomings, many walkers reduce user effort

Embodiment Construction

[0054] See the accompanying drawings in more detail, figure 1 is a perspective view of a walker 32 illustrating the principles of the present invention. figure 1 The walker includes an engineered plastic base member 34, two struts (one of which can be seen at 36), and an outer sole or outsole 38. The plastic base 34 may be formed, for example, of glass-filled nylon, but other high strength plastics or other materials may be used, such as, for example, powder-coated aluminum. Resilient layer 40 , which may be formed from a quarter inch thick resilient foam, provides cushioning between the foot and the upper surface of plastic base 34 .

[0055] Additional padding 42 extends around the patient's foot, ankle and calf. Pad 42 is held in place between the struts, including struts 36, by VELCRO type hook and loop material, wherein the hook type material extends along the inner surface of the struts and pad 42 is either on the outside thereof. The surface has a matching loop mater...

Abstract

An orthopedic walker (200) for mounting on the lower leg of a patient includes a walker base (202) having a central area for receiving the foot of a patient and a spaced lower surface including an outer sole (204), and a pair of struts (210) connected to the walker base (202). Each of the struts (210) has a frame member (214) of high strength material secured to the first end of the walker base (202) and a supporting component (215) integrally secured and adjacent to the frame member (214). The supporting component (215) defines laterally extending side wings (222) generally corresponding to the second end of the frame member (214), and is constructed from a material less rigid than the high strength material of the frame member (214). The supporting component (215) includes a main body (216) and a border portion (218) which are integrally secured and contiguous with one another. The border portion (218) is formed from a material having a lower hardness than the material forming the main body (216).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to orthopedic walking aids, which are orthopedic support boots that wrap around the foot, ankle and lower leg for use by persons recovering from trauma, such as a fracture or other injury to the lower leg, ankle or foot. This type of orthopedic product is often referred to as a "short leg walker". Background technique [0002] Leg-mounted walkers are well known, and typical patents disclosing such walkers include: [0003] US Patent No. 4,771,768, date of authorization: September 20, 1988; inventor: Crispin; title: Controlled Motion Ankle Fracture Walker (Controlled Motion Ankle FractureWalker). [0004] US Patent No. 5,078,128, Grant Date: January 7, 1992; Inventor: Grim et al; Title: Removable Leg Walker. [0005] US Patent No. 5,329,705, Grant Date: July 19, 1994; Inventor: Grim et al; Title: Footgear with Pressure Relief Zones. [0006] US Patent No. 5,368,5581, Grant date: November 29, 1994; Inventor: Zuckerman; Ti...
