This increases the overall thickness of the device
Furthermore, to prevent light from leaving the scattering material through the top surface, the scattering material needs to be of considerable thickness, which may also increase the overall thickness of the device

Embodiment approach

[0020] exist figure 1 A first embodiment of a side-emitting emitting device 100 according to the invention is schematically illustrated in , which comprises a light emitting diode (here also denoted “LED” 101 ) and a substrate 102 on which the LED 101 is arranged. Not shown in this figure, but also present in devices as conventional in the art, is the driver circuit for the LED. The reflector 103 is arranged over the surface of the substrate 102 on which the LED 101 is arranged. Therefore, LED101 faces the reflector 103.

[0021] In this embodiment, the substrate 102 and the reflector 103 are shown to be substantially parallel, but this is not necessary for all inventive embodiments as described below.

[0022] The substrate 102 and the reflector 103 respectively form a lower limit and an upper limit of a light propagation area 115 disposed therebetween. The light propagation region 115 may be empty (vacuum), filled with a gas, liquid, gel, or filled with a solid transmissi...

Abstract

A side-emitting light emitting device (100) is provided, comprising at least one light emitting diode (101) arranged on a substrate (102) and facing a scattering reflector (103) disposed at a distance from and extending along the extension of said substrate. The reflector comprises a scattering layer (108) facing the substrate and a reflecting layer (109) arranged on said scattering layer, said scattering layer exhibiting a roughened surface (111) facing said substrate and a refractive index which is different from the refractive index of a solid transmissive material (106, 115). The scattering action of the reflector (103) gives rise to an angular redistribution in the device, which increases the chance of light exiting the device through lateral openings between the reflector and the substrate, while the opacity prevents light from being emitted through the top surface.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a side-emitting light-emitting device comprising at least one light-emitting diode arranged on a substrate and facing a scattering reflector arranged at a distance from said substrate and along said substrate. extended by extension. Background technique [0002] Colored LEDs as well as phosphor-converted high-power LEDs are attractive as efficient high-brightness light sources for large backlight panels. However, in some applications, such as thin backlights for handheld display devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants, etc., it is necessary to use thin side-emitting emitting devices as light sources. [0003] Side-emitting emitting devices are described in Kim et al. US 2006 / 0208269 A1, which describes LEDs arranged on a substrate, below a reflective surface, so designed that light from the LEDs is directed towards the device by total internal reflection side reflection. In order to scatter light that has ...
