Problems solved by technology

The problem with using this method for dynamic multipath detection is that in many cases dynamic multipath causes significant changes in signal metrics in specific frequency bands, however the overall signal power remains the same

Embodiment Construction

[0018] It will be apparent upon reading and understanding this specification that in order to overcome the limitations of the prior art described above and to overcome other limitations, the present invention discloses an apparatus and method for detecting a rate of change in a multipath for use in In order to adjust the rate of the adaptive equalizer accordingly to effectively weaken the dynamic multipath.

[0019] In one embodiment of the present invention, the present invention solves one or more of the above-mentioned problems by providing a method and apparatus that is compatible with detecting the rate of change of multipath (distortion) for attenuating dynamic multipath A consistent way to detect the rate of change of selected features (or parameters or metrics) of an incoming signal, thereby reducing error levels and improving system performance. It should be noted that the terms "multipath", "multipath distortion" and "multipath impairment" are used interchangeably su...

Abstract

In one embodiment of the present invention, a dynamic multi-path detection device is disclosed to include at least one narrow-band signal metric estimator responsive to input signal. Each of the at least one estimators measures a particular characteristic of the input signal in a frequency band that is narrower than the overall signal bandwidth and is operative to generate a signal parameter estimate signal. The dynamic multi-path detection device is further disclosed to include a signal metric comparison device responsive to the signal parameter estimate signal(s) and operative to generate a dynamic multi-path indication signal for detecting dynamic multi-path.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to receivers and, in particular, to receivers with the ability to detect dynamic multipath effects. Background technique [0002] In a communication system, information is sent from a transmitter to a receiver over a channel, which introduces various impairments. One type of impairment commonly encountered in wireless communications is known as multipath. Multipath is so named because multiple copies, or "echoes," of the transmitted signal take multiple paths through the wireless medium to reach the receiver. In analog television systems such as NTSC in North America and PAL in Europe, multipath impairments result in multiple images other than the main image, or "ghosts". Among wireless digital communication systems, include digital terrestrial television systems such as those defined by: 1) the known standard A / 53 adopted by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC); 2) the established standard adopted ...
