Embodiment Construction

[0043] Referring now to the drawings, in which certain exemplary embodiments are shown for purposes of illustration only and not for limitation of said exemplary embodiments, figure 1 is a perspective view showing a rotor assembly 10 for an induction motor. The induction motor may be any induction motor, including induction motors used in powertrain systems of motor vehicles. The rotor assembly 10 is fixedly attached to the rotor shaft centered on the axis of rotation 15 using any suitable manufacturing method such as shrink fit and lock and key torque fit. It should be appreciated that assembly of the rotor assembly 10 to, for example, a rotatable shaft element may follow assembly of the rotor. The rotor assembly 10 and the rotor shaft share the same axis of rotation 15 .

[0044] The rotor assembly 10 includes a first end 14 and a second end 16 . The rotor assembly 10 is configured to be assembled into and rotate within a stator of an induction motor.

[0045] The rotor ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a rotor for an induction motor and a method of manufacture. In particular, a method for manufacturing a rotor assembly for an induction motor includes assembling shorting end rings to a rotor assembly including a stack of steel laminations and a plurality of conductor bars. The shorting end ring includes a plurality of grooves aligned with corresponding portions of the conductor bars extending from the first end of the steel lamination stack. Assembly involves inserting the corresponding portion of the conductor bar into the groove of the shorting end ring. The shorting end ring is secured to the rotor assembly by applying a compressive force around the perimeter of the shorting end ring to deform the conductor bars.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to rotors for induction motors. Background technique [0002] The statements in this section merely provide background information related to the present disclosure and may not constitute prior art. [0003] Electrically powered induction motors convert electrical power into mechanical torque by inducing a rotating magnetic field between a stationary element (ie, the stator) and a rotatable element (ie, the rotor). The rotating magnetic field produces torque on a shaft coupled to the rotor through the conductor bars. The known stator-induced currents flow through conductor strips on the rotor which are preferably parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotor. [0004] A known rotor for an induction motor consists of: a stack of steel sheets assembled onto a rotatable shaft (i.e. a laminated steel stack); and a plurality of conductors made of a conductive material such as copper or aluminum strip. Conductor bars are contained ...
