Embodiment Construction

[0013] Here we will discuss rack-based uninterruptible power supplies. A data center includes a plurality of computing devices and optionally other networked devices within device racks. AC (alternating current) power is provided to the data center from an external power source and also from a backup generator in the event of loss of power from the external power source. In addition, each equipment rack has a rack power unit that receives AC power and converts the AC power to DC (direct current) power, which is then provided to the various devices located within that equipment rack. Each rack power unit also includes one or more battery packs that provide power to the various devices within that rack during the time period when power from the external AC source is lost until the backup generator becomes operational and provides AC power to the data center. Provide electricity. Each rack power unit may also include additional functionality, such as providing additional DC pow...

Abstract

A rack power unit is configured to be inserted into a device rack of a data center. The rack power unit includes one or more power supplies and one or more battery packs. The one or more power supplies are each configured to receive power (e.g., AC power) when the apparatus is in the device rack, and convert the received power to a DC power. The one or more power supplies are further configured to output the DC power to a DC power bus of the device rack. The one or more battery packs are each configured to provide, in response to an interruption in the received power, DC power to the DC power bus of the device rack.

Description

Background technique [0001] Situations may arise where it is desirable to have a large number of computers operating together at a particular location to provide a service, such as a data center or server cluster providing the service over the Internet. It is often desirable to have a constant power supply at such a location so that computers and other devices operating at the location continue to function. But providing a constant power supply can be difficult because power providers occasionally experience outages. Providing backup power for data centers to protect against such outages can be beneficial, but has its own problems, such as the costs involved in establishing and maintaining such backup power for data centers. Contents of the invention [0002] This Summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the Detailed Description section. This Summary is not intended to identify key features or essenti...
