Embodiment Construction

[0044] figure 1 A block diagram representing an exemplary apparatus 100 for providing an adaptive on-screen keyboard user interface for alphanumeric input. Apparatus 100 includes one or more touch sensors 120 that provide input to a CPU (processor) 110 . When the surface is touched, the touch sensor 120 notifies the processor 110 of the contact event. In one embodiment, touch sensor 120 or processor 110 includes a hardware controller that interprets raw signals generated by touch sensor 120 and transmits the information to processor 110 through a visible data port using known communication protocols. Device 100 includes one or more vibration sensors 130 that transmit signals to processor 110 when the surface is tapped in a similar manner to touch sensors 120 . The processor 110 generates an image of the keyboard presented on the display 140 (touch surface) based on the signals received from the sensors 120, 130. Speaker 150 is also coupled to processor 110 such that any sui...

Abstract

The touch sensitive display surface has touch capacitive and vibration sensors. This surface allows the user to rest their fingers on the keys on the on-screen keyboard and type as on a conventional keyboard. When the user places their finger on the touchscreen, the system repositions the on-screen keyboard to where the finger rested. The touch sensor reports to the processor the signal strength level of each key touched, however, the processor does not issue a keystroke until a corresponding "tap" (ie, vibration) is detected. When a tap is detected, the processor references the state of the touch capacitive sensor before, during, and / or immediately after the time the tap occurred. The size, position and orientation of the on-screen keyboard keys are dynamically set as determined by the user initiating a home row definition event by momentarily resting their finger on the virtual home row.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to smooth touch-sensitive surfaces that allow users to rest their hands or fingers on the surface without causing event actuation. More particularly, a touch surface is a dynamic display that presents an on-screen keyboard for entering text and commands. Background technique [0002] The origin of the contemporary keyboard as the primary method for entering text and data from humans into machines dates back to early 19th century typewriters. Adapting the typewriter keyboard as the primary method for entering text and data was a natural progression with the development of computers. Although the keyboard implemented on the typewriter and later on the computer keyboard has evolved from mechanical to electrical and finally electronic, the size, position and mechanical nature of the keyboard itself has remained essentially the same. [0003] Computers have evolved from "desktop" configurations to more portable configurations...
