Embodiment Construction

[0038] The DMX512 protocol does not specify error detection. The DMX512-A protocol mentions error detection by using SIP, which achieves some level of error protection, but requires all DMX slaves to conform to the DMX512-A protocol and requires sending separate packets. Additionally, DMX512 and DMX512-A do not specify error correction.

[0039] Therefore, there is a need in the art to provide methods and apparatus related to DMX protocol extensions that enable error detection and error correction by enhanced DMX slave devices. Optionally, extensions to the DMX protocol can remain fully compatible with non-enhanced DMX slaves, and optionally overcome one or more additional disadvantages of SIP. The method and apparatus may utilize a plurality of forward error correction bytes incorporated into a DMX packet and include forward error correction data associated with a plurality of bytes in the DMX packet.

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for improved DMX communication are disclosed. In some embodiments, methods and apparatus related to DMX protocol extensions allow error detection and correction via enhanced DMX slaves. The methods and apparatus may utilize at least one forward error correction byte incorporated within a DMX packet and that may be used to correct instruction bytes in the DMX packet. In some variations, bytes within the DMX packet may optionally be interleaved according to an interleaving scheme.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to methods and devices related to the extension of communication protocols. More particularly, the various inventive methods and devices disclosed herein relate to methods and devices related to the extension of the DMX communication protocol. Background technique [0002] The DMX communication protocol is a lighting command protocol commonly used in the lighting industry for some programmable lighting applications, and currently includes the DMX512 and DMX512-A protocols. In the DMX protocol, lighting-related instructions can be transmitted to the lighting unit as control data, the control data is formatted as a packet including up to 512 bytes of data, where each data byte is represented by a value between 0-255 of 8 bits. Each 8-bit data is preceded by a single Start Bit and followed by two Stop Bits to form a so-called data slot (11 bits in size). These 512 data slots are preceded by a "start code" byte (t...
