Problems solved by technology

However, restructuring is complicated because MNOs must support a large number of legacy M2M devices
M2M devices such as smart meters typically have a long life cycle and because migrating a device to 3G / LTE requires service personnel to be dispatched to the location where the device is deployed, such migration is expensive

Abstract

In one embodiment, a method for allocating resources in a wireless system supporting a first radio access technology (RAT) and a second RAT operating on a narrower frequency band than the first RAT comprises assigning to the second RAT ( S210) At least one PRB in multiple physical resource blocks (PRBs) of the frequency band. The method further includes transmitting over at least one assigned PRB using the second RAT in the first sector (S220). The method further includes transmitting (S230) a control signal on an unassigned PRB using the first RAT in the first sector.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 598,993, filed February 15, 2012, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0002] General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is widely used in cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) devices. The cost of GPRS has continued to decrease over time, making GPRS more attractive to M2M providers. Furthermore, since GPRS is available worldwide, a single technical device based on GPRS can be used for internationally deployed applications. Although GPRS may not allow high levels of data transmission, GPRS is still suitable for M2M because most M2M devices require very low data rates to communicate. [0003] Explosive data growth is causing a shortage of spectrum, and thus many mobile network operators (MNOs) are investigating ways to refarm their 2G spectrum for more efficient 3G / LTE. However, restructuring is complicated because the MNO has to sup...
