[0031] Particular embodiments of the invention relate to apparatus and methods for heating hydrocarbonaceous material (e.g., tar sands or hydrocarbonaceous rocks, such as coal or oil shale blocks) within an enclosure (e.g., a mine or reservoir or vessel) method. Hydrocarbon-bearing rock is directed into the enclosure to form a rock bed (eg, a packed bed) therein. Oxygen can be evacuated (eg, under vacuum or through) to create a substantially anoxic environment within the enclosure. In various embodiments, the enclosure may be a mine shaft, or a reservoir or container. The enclosure may be completely or partly below ground level and partly or completely above ground level.
