Embodiment Construction

[0013] According to the principles of the present invention, a system and method for perfusion imaging are provided. The results of ionizing radiation and chemotherapy are changes in the level of hemoglobin and water content in the irradiated tissue area, as well as changes in the local perfusion pattern with increased vasodilation. Perfusion imaging technology measures the tissue concentration, water, oxygen saturation, and flow of hemoglobin to obtain the tumor perfusion level during the delivery of radiation therapy as a measure of the effect of radiation therapy. The perfusion level can be obtained in real time or intermittently between parts of radiation therapy.

[0014] Preferably, the probe of the perfusion imaging device is positioned so that it does not interfere with the effective radiation therapy beam. In one embodiment, the probe is coupled to the robot arm to position the probe. The probe can be positioned based on one or more of the following: the current effect...

Abstract

A system and method for perfusion imaging includes an imaging device (122) configured to collect perfusion information from a target region. The processing module (110) is configured to determine a perfusion level of the target region based on the perfusion information. The planning module (114) is configured to provide a treatment plan for the target region by correlating the perfusion level with treatment activities for the target region, wherein the treatment activities are based on all adjusted according to the characteristics of the perfusion level described above.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to medical instruments, and more specifically to tumor perfusion imaging during radiation therapy delivery. Background technique [0002] Radiation therapy (RT) is commonly used for the treatment of cancer. Conventionally, RT treatment plans are static, because they are created and delivered without any modification between the various parts. RT used in combination with chemotherapy enhances the treatment of cancer because the uptake of chemotherapy agents by the tumor increases the effect of RT. The uptake of the chemotherapeutic agent by the tumor is determined by the concentration level of the agent in the tumor, which in turn depends on the level of tumor perfusion. Therefore, the ability to measure changes in tumor perfusion during RT delivery can generate valuable feedback in determining the fit of the RT treatment plan for the remaining portion and in determining the appropriate drug delivery mode for the administrati...
