Embodiment Construction

[0061] Depending on how many and which of the disclosed design features are used in the cube corner article or in its manufacture, we have developed a series of cube corner articles that provide a number of beneficial product characteristics.

[0062] Before discussing the design features in more detail, we first turn to Figure 4 to view some parameters related to the lighting and viewing geometry of retroreflectors. In the figures, article 450 has a front surface 430 . Article 450 may be a retroreflective sheeting, or other retroreflector that may have a structured surface (eg, on the back or back of an object) to provide retroreflectivity. The article is assumed to lie substantially in a reference plane. In the figures a Cartesian x-y-z coordinate system is shown and it is assumed that the reference plane corresponds to the x-y plane. Note that if a given article is curved, or otherwise not flat, a portion of the article small enough to approximate a plane can be conside...

Abstract

Cube corner articles, such as retroreflective sheeting, are disclosed that utilize multiple cube corner arrays in a tiled configuration, each tile including one array of angled cube corner elements. The tiles may be long and narrow, and each array of at least two or three adjacent tiles, or even an array within each tile, may include at least one longitudinal groove parallel to at the edge of the tile and parallel to a fixed in-plane axis. Each tile may have a narrow (eg, 0.2 mm to 5 mm) width equal to an integer multiple of the longitudinal groove pitch to avoid or reduce ineffective fragmented solid angles along the tile edges. Each array may have a sloped plane and a primary plane of incidence slope, and the primary planes of incidence slope of multiple tiles may be more evenly distributed in azimuth than the sloped plane.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to retroreflective sheeting and related articles comprising cube corner elements, and has particular application to articles in which different cube corner arrays are arranged into multiple tiles to provide improved retroreflective performance. The invention also relates to articles and systems comprising such cube corner articles, and methods of making and using such articles. Background technique [0002] Retroreflective cube corner articles are known. Such articles comprise cube corner elements, each such cube corner having three approximately mutually perpendicular highly reflective faces. The reflective surface interacts with the light such that each cube corner element redirects incident light in its original general direction, regardless of the light's angle of incidence. This feature is useful in applications that require enhanced visualization, such as street and highway signs, traffic control cylinders and ...
