Embodiment Construction

[0072] The engine combusts air and fuel to produce drive torque. The coolant system includes a coolant pump that circulates coolant through various parts of the engine, such as the cylinder heads, engine block, and integrated exhaust manifold (IEM). Traditionally, engine coolants have been used to absorb heat from the engine, engine oil, transmission fluid, and other components and transfer the heat to the air via one or more heat exchangers.

[0073] A pump control module controls the coolant pump based on a target flow of coolant through the engine. The pump control module may determine the target flow based on the torque output of the engine and the engine speed. Determining the target flow based on engine torque output and engine speed may enable coolant flow to be controlled to provide sufficient cooling for operating conditions, and also avoid excessive cooling to maximize fuel efficiency.

[0074] However, when coolant flow is controlled in this manner, the target flo...

Abstract

The present invention relates to coolant control systems and methods for preventing coolant boiling. Specifically, the present invention relates to a coolant control system for a vehicle, which includes a first target flow module and a second target flow module, a target speed module, and a speed control module. The first target flow module determines a first target flow of coolant through an engine. The second target flow module sets a second target flow greater than the first target flow when a change in heat input to the engine is greater than a predetermined value. The target speed module determines a target speed of an engine coolant pump based on the second target flow. The speed control module controls the speed of the engine coolant pump based on the target speed.
