Embodiment Construction

[0040] Figure 1A to Figure 1C An exemplary vapor sensor for detecting alcohol residue at a skin site according to the present disclosure is shown. see Figure 1A to Figure 1C , the vapor sensor 100 includes a housing 110 having an inlet opening 120 . Sensor element 135 is disposed within housing 110 and is in fluid communication with inlet opening 120 . The tubular support member 140a ( Figure 5A Shown in perspective view) is mounted to housing 110 by a press fit with circular protrusion 111 surrounding inlet opening 120, although it is contemplated that other methods of attachment may be used, such as mechanical fasteners or adhesives. An optional porous filter 137 covers the inlet opening 120 to prevent dust from entering the vapor sensor. Tubular support member 140a is comprised of a tube with no apertures or notches in the tube wall. Although shown as a press-fit separate component, the tubular support member may also be integrally formed with the housing. An alter...

Abstract

The present invention discloses a vapor sensor comprising: a housing having an inlet opening in fluid communication with a sensor element within the housing; a bracket member positioned to hold the inlet opening a gap to the skin site; an operating circuit in electrical communication with the sensor element and communicatively coupled to the output member. In use, the output means, upon receiving a communication from the operating circuit, generates a sensory output to an operator indicative of the relevant alcohol vapor concentration in the ambient atmosphere adjacent the skin site.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to sensors for detecting ambient chemical vapors and methods of using such sensors. Background technique [0002] Skin disinfection is usually performed with an antimicrobial preparation containing ethanol or isopropanol prior to catheter installation. Residual vapor from such alcohol-based formulations may interfere with the effectiveness of subsequent tapes or dressings applied to further prepare the site and / or secure the catheter. In addition, insufficient drying of the skin prior to application of drapes and dressings increases the patient's risk of skin irritation. [0003] A typical regimen requires a three-minute waiting period after application of an alcohol-based antimicrobial formulation before applying additional materials or devices to the treated skin. However, due to the workload of nursing staff, this time is not always available. Even allowing time does not ensure that risks are removed under all condi...
