Abstract

Methods for performing surgical procedures utilizing optical coherence tomography (OCT) are provided. The method comprises: orienting a subject for surgery, wherein orienting comprises imaging a region of the subject containing a structure having an asymmetry of known orientation, detecting the image to determine the presence and location of the structure, and utilizing a OCT images of structures with known orientation asymmetries to confirm correct orientation of the subject; use OCT to obtain at least one image of the subject's surgical field and construct an initial structural view of the surgical field; calculate a method for using data from the OCT images At least one clinical parameter associated with the prognosis of the surgical procedure as an endpoint; the surgical procedure is cycled using changes in OCT-derived structural views of OCT of the surgical field or changes in calculated clinical parameters from at least OCT images assess and monitor clinical outcomes related to the surgical procedure; determine whether the surgical plan for surgery needs to be modified based on periodic evaluation and / or monitoring; modify the surgical plan for the surgical procedure if it is determined that a modification is necessary; and repeat the evaluation and Monitor, identify and modify until it is determined that no modification is required.
