Embodiment approach

[0066] In at least some of the above examples, the adhesive that attaches the battery cell and tube to the clamshell also acts as a thermal interface material between the battery cell and tube. Some implementations may not include this feature. Some embodiments may provide a multi-step bonding process where the adhesive is cured using at least radiation and chemical curing mechanisms. For example, such an embodiment includes a method comprising: assembling heat exchange tubes in a module housing for an energy storage pack; travel between them; apply the adhesive that adheres the battery cells and heat exchange tubes to the module housing; apply radiation that cures the first portion of the adhesive, where the second portion of the adhesive is either the battery cell or shielding the heat exchange tubes from radiation; and curing at least a second portion of the adhesive using a chemical curing mechanism. As another example, such an embodiment includes an energy storage pack ...

Abstract

The method includes: assembling heat exchange tubes in a module housing for an energy storage pack; assembling battery cells in the module housing with the heat exchange tubes running between rows of battery cells; applying an adhesive, the adhesive adhering the battery cells and heat exchange tubes to the module housing; curing a first portion of the adhesive by radiation, wherein a second portion of the adhesive is shielded from radiation by the battery cells or heat exchange tubes; and by chemically The curing mechanism cures at least a second portion of the adhesive.

Description

Background technique [0001] Some energy storage systems, such as battery packs, pump cooling fluid through cooling tubes between or near the energy storage battery cells. One aspect of the thermal architecture of such an energy storage system is the thermal resistance between the battery cells and the heat transfer fluid contained within the cooling tubes. A thermal interface material (TIM) can be used to bridge the physical gap between the battery cells and the cooling tubes. In the past, battery cells were stuffed into plastic housings, with straight cooling tubes running between the cell rows and filled with thermally conductive epoxy. Such epoxies can be high cost and high quality with large conductive path lengths. In another approach, appropriate thermal resistance was obtained using a costly, compressible silicone sponge TIM applied to a scalloped cooling tube. Contents of the invention [0002] In a first aspect, a method includes: assembling heat exchange tubes i...
