Problems solved by technology

This results in a more turbulent fill in the booth that may be subject to the characteristics of waterborne coatings and installation tools, causing uneven coating surfaces in the booth or causing noticeable Bubbles appear
If the coating process continues, this will cause an uneven coating front also in the passage of the monolith and will therefore increase the risk of the coated part being out of specification

Embodiment Construction

[0019] An advantageous process for coating the substrate is achieved by the present disclosure. With the apparatus of the present disclosure it is possible to check whether the paint which has been introduced into the coating chamber 100 is ready to be taken up by the attached monolith. In some cases the paint looks uneven or contains air bubbles, as already described ( figure 2 ). If the coating process continues, this will lead to the formation of disturbed coatings in the channels of the monolith. For a coating process carried out over only a part of the length of the monolith, this essentially leads to different area lengths for the different channels, correspondingly significantly increasing the risk of the coated monolith being out of specification. This becomes even more pronounced if the coating speed, and thus the speed of introducing paint into the coating chamber, is further increased.

[0020] However, if the surface of the paint pumped into the coating booth e...

Abstract

The present disclosure relates to an apparatus and method for improving the accuracy of coating ceramic or metal honeycomb bodies that can generally be used as catalysts for reducing motor vehicle exhaust. The present disclosure enables direct testing of whether the coating in the coating booth is ready for delivery to the monolith or needs to be replaced prior to coating the monolith.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to an apparatus for improving the accuracy of coating ceramic or metal honeycomb bodies that can generally be used as catalysts for the reduction of motor vehicle exhaust. The present disclosure enables direct testing of whether the coating in the coating booth is ready for delivery to the monolith or needs to be replaced prior to coating the monolith. Background technique [0002] Various problems arise during the coating of ceramic bodies or metal honeycomb bodies / filters, referred to hereinafter as substrates or monoliths, with liquid coating media (so-called aqueous coatings). One possible solution for coating a substrate is to bring openings on one side of the substrate into contact with the coating medium available from below or above the monolith, and to draw the liquid through the channels of the substrate by applying a vacuum to the opposite side of the substrate Coating medium. If it is intended to coat the ch...
