Abstract

A pipe corrugator having an opposing series of urged die blocks forming a moving die channel, the pipe corrugator has significant thermal expansion and is designed with a thermal expansion gap. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for measuring changes in this expansion gap and preferably identifying potential thermal problems before serious problems occur. A sensor is provided adjacent to the mold block drive, the sensor preferably detecting the time duration between the rear of the leading mold block and the leading edge of the following mold block separated from the leading mold block by a thermal expansion gap. This duration is combined with the velocity of the mold block being pushed to calculate the size of the thermal expansion gap.
