Problems solved by technology

First, most catheters are formed from soft bioreactive polymers, and the use of this material results in potential narrowing or folding of the catheter when negative pressure for aspiration is applied or when the catheter is kinked during insertion or manipulation, preventing backflow
Additionally, accumulation of debris (eg, fibrin / platelet clots) in the tip and lumen of catheters increases with longer indwelling times

Embodiment Construction

[0068] Systems and methods for the withdrawal of blood through a peripheral intravenous catheter are described herein. In some embodiments, an apparatus includes: a catheter having a proximal portion and a distal portion and defining a lumen therethrough; an introducer having a first member and a second member; a locking mechanism coupled to the distal end of the first member; and the actuator coupled to the catheter. At least a portion of the second member is movably disposed in the first member between a proximal position and a distal position relative to the first member. The second member includes a guide having a distal end portion disposed in a distal position relative to the first member when the second member is in the distal position. The locking mechanism is configured to couple the introducer to the peripheral intravenous line. At least a portion of the actuator is disposed in the second member and is configured to move from the first configuration towards the sec...

Abstract

An apparatus comprising: a catheter; an introducer having a first member and a second member; a locking mechanism coupled to a distal end of the first member and configured to couple the introducer to a peripheral intravenous line; and an actuator, Connect to conduit. The actuator is configured to move from a first configuration in which the catheter is disposed within the introducer toward a second configuration to move the second member to a distal position relative to the first member. A portion of the guide of the second member is away from the first member when the second member is in the distal position. The actuator is configured to move relative to the second member to be placed in a second configuration when the second member is in its distal position such that the catheter is disposed within and extends through the end of the peripheral intravenous line the end.
